Thank you all who weighed in yesterday. You were all really informative. America is such a weird place from the outside sometimes.

It's a weird place from the inside, too.

Yup. I think the thing is, there both is and isn't a general US culture. There are some things that are country-wide, but also there are a lot of things that vary depending on where you are. Even some things vary state to state. So it is this weird conglomeration that is one country but in a lot of ways is a whole bunch of different cultures together.

But also, we do have some really strange things. And, like, the country leans right-wing to the point that we call things left-wing that most other countries would call centrist or center-right.

TV in the bedroom?

(Anonymous) 2024-08-19 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you have a TV in your bedroom?

I remember as a kid thinking that was the height of privilege- only rich kids had tvs in theor rooms! Now we have them everywhere lol

No. But I watch most things on my computer, and that I do have in my bedroom.

I used to but decided it was better not to have electronics in the bedroom. Console gaming and movie watching only happens in the living room now.

Nope. to me TVs in the bedroom is stuff for when you're in a hotel.
When I was living in a single room apartment I had a computer that I basically used as a TV, but I didn't really have a choice there (still, I had my desk and I always sat on my desk to use it). I prefer to have a living room with my computer/TV completely separated from my bed. My bed is for sleeping, journaling and reading!

Technically a monitor but it serves the purpose of a TV. We did have two but the second was in an inconvenient place. My partner is the TV-watching person but I have been known to join them for some things, or watch things on a stand-alone TV if my computer is too slow.

The bedroom screen is not governed by the automatic lights-out that happens at 11:30 every night, so if my partner falls asleep with the screen on, I get to turn it off, generally by hand because I don't want to speak to the bedroom Home Assistant while they're asleep.

I don't need much of a will save against TV in the bedroom as some people, because I didn't grow up with a TV and I feel a pretty substantial barrier to starting to watch. My relationship with my phone is something else, but having audiobooks set to time out after an hour will usually convince me to lie down and close my eyes. Which the MythBusters did tell us was better than nothing! (There was an article going around saying that six hours of sleep "was the same" as No Sleep At All. The headline writer ought to have their journalism license stripped: doing 6 hours of sleep per night, for a considerable duration of time causes the same level of impairedness as something like two or three days of no sleep at all. Insomnia is a matter for harm reduction, not sensationalism.)

I did as a teen. Each bedroom plus the family room had one. I never used mine except for video games though.

My husband grew up in a house that had one in every room, all connected to cable with its own VCR. They watched TV nonstop, even through dinner. The difference in upbringing caused some friction in our newlywed phase despite him having moved in with me two years before we got married and knowing I had strict policy of TV in the family room only and never on during dinner. It’s nice to eat in front of the tv sometimes but I hate it being on for every meal and especially if we’re at the dinner table.

I did as a kid but no longer do.

Re: TV in the bedroom?

Yes but only bc I bought and paid for the tv myself without the help of my parents.

We had a real small boxy one when I was a kid and my sister took it with her when we got our own rooms. I didn't have a tv in my room again until I was 31.

I have no tvs in the house. I watch everything on my laptop.

Re: TV in the bedroom?

No.

The presence of a TV or computer in the bedroom is know to impact sleep. The recommendation is that the bedroom be reserved for sleep and sex alone, so as to create a degree of mental separation.

Some people of course have living situations that make it hard to meet that recommendation. I'm in a position to meet it, however, and since I have chronic sleep issues, I use every trick I can.

Yes, in a big old armoire thing. I never had a TV in there as a kid (nor did my husband). We like to fall asleep to streaming documentaries or TV series, though.

Kind of - lol this reminded me that as a teen my Dad gave me one of those portable TVs that were black & white and only received 2 channels. Mostly watched morning cartoons while getting ready for school and the odd late night shows on the very lowest volume. It was during the 2000s and they were well out of date when I got them, so I have no idea where my Dad even got them from.

As a kid, yes (they tended to be handed down from family members, lest you think I was living in Mr. Moneybags' Mansion). As an adult, I prefer not having one in my room. I still watch things from my phone. I just don't like having the option for another distraction enter my space.

Online clothes shopping

[personal profile] philstar22 2024-08-19 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Has anyone figured out a way to make sure the color of something you are looking at online is accurate?

I keep being disappointed by things that look dark orange online but end up being brown or maroon.

Damaged cheese wedge container

(Anonymous) 2024-08-19 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I ordered some groceries, and a cheese wedge container was damaged - there was a dent and the lid was slightly open, maybe by half an inch, like someone had tried to steal the wedges before giving up or maybe getting caught. How safe are the cheese wedges to eat?

Umbrella Academy - final season - here be spoilers!

[personal profile] tabaqui 2024-08-20 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
Did anyone else watch?
Was anyone else just REALLY underwhelmed and disappointed with Five and Lila's arc? Not the being lost bit (though that was really out of the blue), but their whole thing?
I was just...really meh on that.

I didn't enjoy this season as much as the previous ones, and it didn't really feel like a show finale to me. It was just...kinda meh.

IUDs?

(Anonymous) 2024-08-20 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
Has anyone used one here? What has been your experience? Aside from insertion. I'm just curious if
a. did it give you acne if acne was not a major problem for you/worsen your current acne situation
b. fuck with your mental health at all
c. lowered your libido

What kind did you use? Anything you want to share, I'd love to hear! I'm super on the fence, all the bad stories are pushing me further away and apparently another non hormonal option is in development, but who knows for how long.

Thank you!!
