Secrets you don't want to make...

(Anonymous) 2024-08-31 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
... but you wouldn't mind if someone else made them for you! As always, including the fandom and full character names is a big help, and while I'm definitely not the world's greatest expert at secret design, I'll try my best. Please note that secrets with lots of text are sometimes difficult to accommodate and I'll give it a shot but might not be able to make secrets where the text is so lengthy that I can't fit it into the limited space.

I'll monitor this thread until tomorrow's secret post goes up, so feel free to leave your comments until then!

Yours truly,

a secret maker

P.S. Please don't worry if you've submitted a secret and it hasn't been posted yet. I usually post these threads before running out of the previous batch of secrets to get a head start on the next batch.

I wish people would learn that sometimes bad people can make good art. Or that someone turning out to be a terrible person in one regard can still make art that resonates with people in others.

I hate that current (or maybe I just see it more often now) trend of an actor/musician/writer turning out to have done something terrible or have terrible opinions (or heck, just wrote things decades ago that are now understood to be bad) and people fine combing their works, looking for evidence that everyone clearly always should have known - especially when they imply that the fans maaaaybe condone the thing the creator of their show/movie/book did/said and always have and WHY haven't they loudly denounced their love for the thing yet?

Brought to you by the latest post I've seen going "Instead of Gaiman, who really was totally always problematic if you all were actually looking properly, you should rather read Ursula K. Le Guin/Diana Wynne Jones/*insert more authors here*" and then people in the comments ALSO going "WELL ACTUALLY, this author used this slur in this one book they wrote 40 years ago!"

Can't we give each other some grace? Is the urge to feel superior so great?

I do agree with this. But on the other hand, for me at least, I'm not comfortable giving money to someone who is really terrible. Someone who is dead, I'll happily watch. But if the person is still living and genuinely a terrible person, I'm probably not going to watch or read their stuff.

Lois and Clark was superior to both Smallville and Superman and Lois. It had a Superman in it, beating Smallville, and people regularly smiled instead of looking like they were being stretched on a rack for fifteen hours a day before making it like in S&L. And something exciting happened every episode.

And we had a Superman capable of looking clean shaven. I hate the permastubble look.

misfire - ignore

When I was a teeny tiny kid - 3 or 4 - I had an imaginary friend called Shelly, who had long red hair and was very nice, but was always "away".

Last week I realised that "Shelly" was Ariel from The Little Mermaid.

I did not expect such a mundane realisation to feel like the foundations of my childhood were undermined. It just felt so weird!!

CW underage

I get people who are like "your fictional kink is not my fictional kink and that's okay" when it comes to rape/abuse/gore.

I get, even if I don't agree with, people who are like "your fictional kink is awful and harmful and I don't anyone to read or hear any of it" when it comes to rape/abuse/gore.

I don't get people who are totally okay with fictional rape/abuse/gore but clutch their pearls at loli/shota.

I don't like or look for the latter but is fiction fiction, or what?

It's always great to see the current flavour of puriteens and antis losing their shit at any -in their eyes- problematic ship and accusing everyone who ships it to also support these things irl but somehow don't have an issue with violence/gore in fiction. Weird how clearly, every underage/incest/whatever shipper is an irl creep and predator but crime and horror authors magically aren't potential serial killers.

Re: Secrets you don't want to make...

Because they know that rape/abuse/gore are bad but that knowledge is purely intellectual and not visceral; they could look at gore without wanting to puke. But they're so disgusted by children in any capacity that children + sex is puke-worthy and morally unforgivable.

I'm into shit that features male characters crossdressing, being called girls, playing traditionally female gender roles, and generally being feminine in a kink way. Including trans male characters. Voluntarily, faux-voluntarily, or not voluntarily at all.

...but ONLY if the whole premise is consistently that they are and remain male regardless. The whole point of the kink is that the character performing all this is someone who is NOT female. Even if a trans man is being forced to wear a dress, the whole point is that he's a man in a dress.

I hate that people have started blending this in with 'amab character who does a journey of self discovery and realizes she's a girl for real' and I'm never sure whether it's gonna end like that or not. Bro I'm here for men of all sizes and shapes being girly. Trans female characters are women, and I'm just not into women.

I can't really say it out loud in the Genshin Impact fandom because the music/the musicians they hired is probably just about all the authentic diversity Natlan is going to get in the near future but honestly, I really dislike the singing in the Natlan OST because all other background music has been purely instrumental so far and to suddenly change it seems kind of jarring.
But then again, jarring seems to be a general theme for Natlan so far. A lot of it feels like an entirely different game altogether, imo.

I think US remakes of non-US movies should not be able to be nominated for several Oscar categories, including the one for Best Picture.

I'm super excited for the Suikoden 1 & 2 remaster finally having a release date! It's one of my all-time fav series and the remaster means it'll be way more accessible to people and that's all to the good.

But I'm a bit bummed out that they've retranslated the games and, from the screencaps we've been given so far, they've taken out much of the crazy, extraneous punctuation.

I know it'll be more grammatically correct but I'm going to miss the !!!!!!!!! and ............... and ????? since they added so much charm to the originals for me.

I wish British YouTubers who explore American culture on their channels would come on over and attend a state fair.

Especially the Minnesota State Fair. That isn't so much a fair as it is an unofficial state holiday.

I've been watching Bob's Burgers since day one, and it was a revelation to me when I realized that what I really loved and related to in the show was that unlike most sitcoms at the time, you really get the feeling that the Belchers like each other. Not just love each other, but genuinely enjoy each other as human beings. And I'm really glad that that seems to have influenced a lot of shows since (including newer episodes of the Simpsons!).

My next hope is that The Great North can hang around long enough so that we start seeing more normalizations of adults still living at home because it works for everyone. (I realize Wolf and Honeybee have their own little house but c'mon, they're living with the rest of the Tobins.) Too many shows play that dynamic for pathos or constant tension and while yes, that definitely happens, there are a lot of (particularly non American) families where it's just life, and not a bad one at that.

The Last Jedi deserves all of the criticism and scorn heaped at it. It was a movie so bad it broke its own setting.

I'm glad we're almost done with the post 9/11 uncritical praising of cops and government in fiction, but I really cannot wait until Hollywood is done with also uncritically praising and kissing ass of the military too. Can we get some more crooked and damaged ex-military types again please?

I hate it when directors just have actors improvise their lines in a film. That isn't an actor's job. That is the writers' job.

[Friends] I almost feel sorry for Ross when the others make fun of him for being a palaeontologist, because that's actually a pretty cool job. Then I remember the way he looks down on Gunther and how he acted when Rachel was a waitress, and it seems more like karmic realignment.

I think the writers of Batman Caped Crusader genuinely got Firefly and Firebug mixed up. Don't care what they claim.

I wish I could just wave a magic wand and be into the same canons and fandoms and ships as everyone else. Or even snap my fingers and get everyone else into the fandoms I love.

I hate being between fandoms and being so picky about what sparks new hyperfixations.
