Question to americans

(Anonymous) 2024-09-12 07:15 am (UTC)(link)
I probably should spend less time in reddit. But I often see phrases like "it's only an 8 hour drive you can make it in one day two ways" (16 hours?!!) or "I drive every day more" etc etc. And at this point of my life more than 3 hour drive is probably an overnight stay for me. I've spent in the car whole day not once and I used trains that go for days. Etc. But it just sucks so much. So are they just being overconfident and hyperbolic or is it really normal to make a day trip with hours and hours of driving? And I am just old.

8 hours is a long but doable one-day drive to me if I head out early. I made a couple of them over the summer. It's not something I could do all the time, and I think most people feel the same, but it was also normal for my family to drive that long to a vacation spot in one day.

I've known a few people for who three hours was their daily work commute time both ways. My college was 3 hours away and I lived on campus because I could never do that much very day, but it happens occasionally depending on the person.

I think 8-12 hour drive to vacation spot is ok. If you are spending some time where. But one day or even weekend seems like a bit overtop.

I hate commute with passion frankly

Some people enjoy road trips, so it may just be that they don't mind doing that.

It depends on where you're going and for what purpose. I live in the west coast/Midwest area. I can see myself going on a day trip where driving back home is part of the commute if the drive one way is 4 hours or less. Anything more than that I'd do an overnight stay.

I've had jobs where I had to drive about 1 hour to get to work and I hated the commute. Can't imagine driving 3+ hours everyday one way for work, but I know some people who do those sorts of commutes.

The west coast and the midwest are totally different areas, how are you combining them?

Living in a landlocked state that isn't quite midwest I never fucking know what people consider "west coast" or "midwest". I've seen my region be listed as both in various places. If it soothes you, I personally consider myself a west coaster.

Honestly, as an American, I don't believe that people are normally driving so much. At least not as a regular thing. I don't think that anyone is driving 8 hours two ways without it being an exceptional super weird thing, and very few people are driving more than 4 or 5 hours a day unless they work as a truck driver or delivery person or something.

Like... from Chicago, it's about 4.5 hours to St. Louis or Cincinnati. I could see someone doing that as a day trip, maybe, although it'd be intense. There's no way anyone is doing that as a commute. It's about 6.5 hours to Omaha and about 8 hours to Memphis - the idea of doing Omaha or Memphis there-and-back in a single day from Chicago is absolutely batshit insane.

So, yeah, I think people are strongly overemphasizing how much driving they actually do. Even for Americans, that's crazy. Even if it feels like that's how long you've been driving when you're stuck in traffic.

Thank you!
I am from a large country and I had road trips though I don't enjoy them much. I don't even enjoy long (more than a day) train rides. And my cousin actually were doing quite regular daily trips that took 4 hours one way. But 8 hour thing seems like a bullshit to me

We drive to a destination (visiting family) that's an 18-hour drive and we do this once a year or so. It's a two-day trip. Yes, it's pretty grueling! I didn't mind it as much when I was 25 vs 45.

I've done one 12 hour and one 9 hour drive in two days before, just stopping for gas, bathroom breaks, and snacks.

A couple of considerations: if you have two or more people in the car, it's usually cheaper than flying because gas isn't as expensive here as some other places. And you can swap out drivers. Plus, then you have your car at your destination. Some road trips are better than others, if the scenery is good.

I prefer trains :'D
Also I really hate having car in a city, such a bother.
My father though is 12 hour drive kind of guy.

Yeah, 8hrs two ways is over the top. 8hrs total - 4hrs there and 4hrs back - I would believe but not 16hrs of driving in one day.

I do know people that commute 3hrs each way, 6 total, daily - I live about 3hrs from a major city and some people buy property here because it is cheaper but still work in the city. As someone with a 5min commute I can't even imagine. But then I have a job that no matter where I work I won't be able to afford a house so what do I know.

I am driving 12hrs in one day on a trip soon. But then I am staying there for 4 days before I have to make the long drive home. Cheaper than flying!

I will often go see my parents who live 3hrs away and make it a daytrip where I end up driving 6hrs in a day. More iften I stay the night, but it isn't too wild to make it a day trip.

Normal, though mostly done by people in the plains. I've done 12 hr drives in one day for a long weekend away.
