If it's streamer and influencer types, they're doing this as their job so it's all tax deductible and written off as business expenses. And games silently sponsor them and give them free pulls a lot or pay them back in sponsorship deals.

If it's regular people, the easy answer is addiction, and just like with many other addictions, they get the money by pulling money from other places in their lives that could have used it. Sure, I'm sure some of them are quietly rich and this is their hobby, but what are the chances it's all or most of them?

Right, like I've seen in a lot of fandom circles, gacha addicts grifting and doing gofundmes to cover bills and other expenses because all their actual money is going to gacha. It's sad mostly because there's no real way to stop the predatory game from existing to exploit addiction.

They don’t even seem to enjoy it! They rush to complete an event with the “optimal” characters and strategies as fast as possible, then rush to complete another event in a different game as fast as possible, zooming through game after game with no time to relax. I’ve been told ak.gamepress.gg is targeted towards this kind of player, which explains a lot about the site culture.

On your last point, back when Love Live School Idol Festival was a big thing (rip you are forever missed), there was this guy on Reddit who was extremely wealthy and decided to do an experiment to see how much money it would take to get every single Ultra Rare that came out. It was a ton of fun, but it also invited a bunch of whales to also share their experiences, and you would be shocked by the amount of rich tech guys who really like their waifus lmao.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-04 06:57 am (UTC)(link)
Unless OP is exclusively or mostly following rich tech guys though, that doesn't really explain things. IME the whales are very open about being rich, like you said, and it's clear where those guys' money is coming from, so it's not those people OP would wonder about.

Either way, whales like that still make up a tiny minority of the actual playerbase in terms of population. The implication that there are more secret rich guys playing Genshin vs. regular people who are knowing or unknowing gacha addicts who then turn around and post their draws for more positive feedback seems inaccurate to me.

This is a genuinely weird thing to be baffled by. I would presume they get their disposable income from their jobs?

(Anonymous) 2024-10-04 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
I am baffled by how many people that have that much disposable income, time, and desire to spend it on these games.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-04 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
I know people who spend hundreds a month on fishing gear/golf clubs/knitting supplies/gardening stuff/etc. and who spend equal amounts of time on those things. I don't pretend to understand it but it brings them joy so it's not my place to judge.

Not everyone is a Walmart cashier, there are plenty of people who have good amounts of money to spend on whatever makes them happy.

When I started playing mobile games, I was unemployed. That meant having plenty of time for 3-4 games because I was pretty much glued to my phone every day but I had no money to spend on them. Now that I'm employed, I have the money but no time at all so I stopped playing gradually. I just hated the FOMO that came with not being able to join a new event as soon as it started and to do dailies every 5 hours.

How some players have both time and money is a mystery to me as well.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-03 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
The amount of time required really depends on the game and whether you're at the "endgame" stage or not. If you are, dailies tend to be very quick since there isn't much you need to do in order to stay current.

I play 4 different gachas and my dailies for all of them take me under 20 minutes. I'm caught up on all of the story for the games so all I really need to do at this point is my dailies and farming whatever event is up, which I can do with a few taps.

As someone who (doesn't post about it, but) lives like this, mostly it's the fact that I work from home full time. So for games on my phone, like Pokemon Masters EX, Colorful Stage, Fire Emblem Heroes, etc, I can just set it to auto play while I do my work. So that leaves me actually only needing to do my dailies on Genshin (and now Zenless Zone Zero, I dropped Star Rail...) which is a lot more manageable. The ability to spend on gacha so freely is really because I can't drink, so I'm never out at bars. I have a ton of disposal income compared to my friends from that single fact alone lol. Otherwise I'm just frugal in other places that matter less to me, like dining out.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-04 05:40 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the amount of time spent depends 100% on whether a game has auto/sweeps or not. My main game has a sweep ability so once I've cleared a stage with all stars, I can just tap a button to instantly repeat it as many times as I have the stamina for. One of my other games doesn't have a sweep, but it does have auto so all I have to do is press a couple of buttons to repeat the stage. The only times I have to actually play myself are when clearing stages for the first time.

Do that on the first day of the event and then farming is basically just pressing buttons and sitting back and letting the game play itself.

A lot of streamers may have people who do the boring grinding for them so they can play multiple games and do the "fun stuff" on camera. For instance, murderofbirds has a friend who will do all the grinding for new 5 stars for him so that when he actually goes to pull them he both hasn't been spoiled yet (because he waits a few days after new content comes out so he can give his followers a chance to play it first) and he already has all the materials to build them right away. I assume other content creators do something similar. And of course since the ones with big audiences are usually doing it as their sole job they can spend a lot of time playing these games one camera and off because...they don't have a day job to go to as well.

And like others said...since being a content creators is their business they can write a lot of that gacha money off as business expenses since it provides them content. Or they get sponsored. Not to mention fans will often gift them gacha currency (I've seen it happen often enough on streams) so they'll pull for characters.

I wondered this a lot when I was actively participating in the kpop fandom.

So many fans who I wondered how they afforded all the merch, VIP packages at all the international concerts/fan meetings.

I don't understand how or why people find things like this strange. There are loads of people out there who have lots of money to spend. Is it really so weird that some of them might like spending their money on stuff like that?

(Anonymous) 2024-10-05 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT
Just from my personal POV, it's a lot of money. Don't get me wrong, if I had the means to afford all of that I would participate with idols/groups I really like.
It was a bit of a culture shock to me how much merchandising goes into the fandom. I have to save a lot and work a lot to get minimum experiences (buying an album or going to a concert once a year), so to see fans be able to go all out is enviable.
Not trying to shame anyone for how they spend their money, just from my POV, it's a lot time and resources and I was unaware how multilayered the whole system is.
For one example...
Like, to me, I thought it was "enough" to buy a new album because I thought buying one album equates to one album sale. But there are incentives to buy albums in bulk. Photo cards. Raffle tickets to enter for fan meetings. Trying to get your idol to win a competition on a certain showcase. Etc.

It's similar to other fandoms (I have siblings who are into Magic the Gathering and they have huge cards/decks/dice collections), but before I got into the fandom I had no idea how much you can spend both in time and money on even just one idol or group.
Someone else upthread said when they were unemployed they had the time but not the money for the thing they got into. Now that they're working they have the money but not the time.
I feel similarly to them. I wish I could have both the time and money/resources for a fun hobby, but it's a balancing act between time and money.
