I'm not quite sure what I'm supposed to be looking at, is it because the snowflake vaguely resembles KKK people or something?

See, when I saw the story first a few days ago on local news (ye olde businesse segement) the lead was "candle controversy!" so I had to think real hard to guess what was so controversial about the image, and KKK was honestly not my first assumption. To me, it's obviously supposed to be a cut-out paper snowflake but done badly, like...there's no extra cuts, just a couple stupid circles. At worst I thought they had a Halloween ghost graphic that got reused and the "controversy" was they had some sort of Halloween/Chrismas mixup. The circles look like eyes, sure, but on a winter holiday candle it's still obvious it's a snowflake, just a really reallly really stupid one (look at the "folds," that would be a 10-sided snowflake and that's just wrong). I had to stretch to guess Klan and oof. Bingo.

Redesigning the packaging was also an option. It's not the candles that are the problem.

Why does the snowflake have curves?! So much trouble could have been avoided using a more crystalline design. I mean, it's probably innocent, and no harm was intended, but god damn if that doesn't look like a Trump rally!

They're just removing them from stores, not destroying them. Nothing to get offended and scream about.

KKK likeness aside, they should get better designs because this would have looked awful even with different snowflakes.

I actually saw a LinkedIn post about the subject of diversity in advertising from a Black woman. She indicated that even when there is a Black (or otherwise BIPOC) employee in the room, sometimes they're the only one that raises objections and gets overruled by everyone else in the space. I can understand only putting up with that for so long before becoming utterly exhausted by the solo work. Now if there were at least three BIPOC employees in the room, the odds improve at least a little bit.

They look like little aliens to me, tbh. Having read the comments, I now know what I'm supposed to see, but the curves and thin "torso" part just don't register as people to me. At best it looks like a caricature of a Klan meeting to me.

The label is pretty ugly though. Very "graphic design is my passion" imo. It's kind of funny that they could have avoided any backlash if they had just chosen a better snowflake design.

I remember a trend a while back of assigning fragrances to characters. Not sure if that's still done but I think we also had a secret about it at some point.

I couldn't understand what is wrong with this candles. Yes, design is a bit weird and they look like knives but nothing is especially wrong.
Thanks to this thread I can't unsee it now. Tbf I am not American so Klan isn't something I would see easily
