[The Cat Has Its Heart on the Outside]

(Anonymous) 2024-10-21 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
The Cat needs to seek therapy.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-21 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
The Cat sounds like it's been around abusive people in its past or present that may have caused The Cat to develop low self-esteem.

The original post is tagged #bpd, so make of that what you will.

Pieces like this annoy me because they always omit anything negative about the poor woobie feelings-haver's actions.

Of course everyone else will seem heartless if you portray the entire world as wholly unreasonable people that are mad about 'someone having lots of feelings' instead of all the significantly missing actions the main character took and demands they made and things they imposed on others about those feelings, because it's always assumed 'felt too much = could not help but act'.

And that's just not true.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-21 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes!

I understand people have Big Feelings or are Highly Sensitive but you are still responsible for your own feelings and actions. I feel like a lot of the people I know who have ended up emotionally manipulative abusers use The Cat type of excuses. Like they couldn't help themselves, they're just a Highly Sensitive Empath.

This. Having lots of feelings isn't a problem. The actions people take because of those feelings is usually what's causing the problem, and then people rationalize it because FEEEEEEEEEELINGS.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-21 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
The Cat has an attachment disorder and possible codependency issues.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-21 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
So I looked up the whole comic and jeez louise I hope the person who wrote that is a child. Also, they turn it around and have a bit of demonizing the people who don't express emotions the same way - "some with hearts so hidden its uncertain if they have them at all" like fuck the right off with that. Just because someone doesn't loudly cheer or cry the same times you do doesn't mean they have no heart or don't feel things.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-21 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Considering the Cat seems amazed and confused that writing about its feelings in a book that people can read as a third party and relate to on their own terms and in their own time is different from dumping its feelings on people directly and demanding immediate response... it seems like ironically enough, for all the talk about feelings, the Cat/author doesn't understand people or other people's feelings much.

DA

I have an occasional poker face due to being neurodivergent. (AKA flat affect). It’s more obvious when I’m sad or angry. The Cat is clingy and possibly the kind of feline that has had one too many shoes thrown at it.

I refuse to beleive that non-Cat type people are reprehensible.

Super cringe and insufferable. Having feelings doesn't make you a special gem of a person, everyone has feelings.

This sounds like it as written by one of those people who glorify being extra empathetic and demonize anybody with lower empathy (ie low empathy autistic ppl and ppl with antisocial personality disorder) and view them as inherent monsters.

Which is a whole bunch of obnoxious bullshit. I am what one might consider a "high empathy" autistic person. Plus I have bipolar type 2. This DOES NOT make me a nicer or even better person. Just one with lots feelings (and unhealthy habits of dealing with them all)

Some very kind and helpful people I've known had antisocial personality disorder. And some of the cruelest fuckers I've ever seen clearly HAD empathy but chose not to extend it to some certain people they deemed immoral or not deserving. And/or they let all their emotions about a certain topic cloud their judgement.

It's made me begin to rethink how i thought of or even talked about some mental illnesses to not treat certain people as lesser.

Whether or not empathy is a thing that comes easy to you or you experience like most people expect does not determine your worth or morality as a person. Its your choices , your actions

We need to quit valorizing certain kinds of mental illness while demonizing others. We need to not treat certain mental illnesses/conditions as more noble than others AS WELL AS talking about people with certain conditions and purely mental illnesses in terms of how they inconvenience others

The Cat is mentally ill. That doesn't make them any better or worse than others. Nor does it make the others better or worse. But the Cat does need HELP for their condition and may need to unlearn some things.

Being the Cat /being a person who used to be like Cat and unlearning some of that shit is fucking EXHAUSTING.

This is a good well thought out comment.

Small correction

> We need to not treat certain mental illnesses/conditions as more noble than others AS WELL AS not talking about people with certain conditions and purely mental illnesses in terms of how they inconvenience others

Is what i meant. Basically referring stuff like that anti-autistic ableism where more moderate to severely autistic people are only seen as how they 'burden' their caretakers/how exhausting they are etc and not treated like people. That shit's dehumanizing as fuck and ime a lot of the people who talked like that eventually extended it to any autistic person including those like me who only needed like a handful of support needs and a bit of GODDAMN PATIENCE when i was child

Edited (Added this bc i wanted to just basically address how so much if my feelings on this are about different kinds of ableism. Something that lifts up some mentally ill ppl while demonizing others is just a different kind of ableism.) 2024-10-22 00:20 (UTC)

damn some of you guys are being pretty harsh on this cat

(Anonymous) 2024-10-21 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I laughed at this. You're not wrong, but I don't regret anything I said lol

Admittedly without context... I don't think it's necessarily bad to make art about that intensity of emotion, healthy or not. It's a real experience people have, many of whom go on to figure out how to manage their intense reactions, some of whom unfortunately don't. And it's an interesting subject for art. Some of these comments strike me as rejecting the subject matter itself more than the way the artist handles it. I can see being frustrated if the artist portrays this as 100% healthy and those who are different as lesser, that would irritate me too, so I get where those comments are coming from.

Looked this up, and,

1. Oh crap, I remember following that artist back in the dA days. Good for him for moving on to being an illustrator.

2. Yeah, this is... Honestly, everything I hate about modern attitudes on mental health in a nutshell. I sympathize with The Cat and can relate, but... People like The Cat are very hard to deal with, especially when it comes to falling in love with anyone who is kind, which is a trauma response that has ruined my relationships. Especially since in the full comic, The Cat copes so badly with other people having different emotional responses that they just... Runs away, just stays in their house, and stops talking to people. That's not a healthy way to live, as someone who wasted years hiding away because I thought I was "too different" to be understood, when that's just not true. I needed to mature and learn to understand people better, and manage my emotional responses to things. People like The Cat do too, I'm sorry.

Cool artist. Cute art. Bad values, IMO.

The Cat needs A Hat. Maybe a nice Fedora.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-22 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
Feel very mixed about the response to this. Like, its very easy to say just get over bad mental health - especially trauma which works about as well as wearing bright clothing = abolishing depression, as well as 'just get therapy' - the thing that costs money and is usually inaccessible to anyone too poor or not 'worthy' enough by a lot of shitty healthcare systems.

Maybe it's just me but... this comic, and the Cat, would be significantly less annoying if not for the art style. Or maybe it actually fits perfectly, since the Cat's expressions are so exaggerated? No idea, but even if the Cat was super normal and well-adjusted, those tumblr-circa-2016-faces would make me hate them anyway, lol.

Cat's going to flip it's shit when Dog maintains a boundary. Hooo-boy.
