What are some things you don't understand the point of?

(Anonymous) 2024-10-24 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Mine is non-alcoholic alcohol. Especially beer. I just really can't comprehend enjoying beer for the taste.

Media where everything is terrible, everyone is terrible, there is no one to root for, and everyone and everything is miserable. Clearly some people really like that, but I just don't get it.

From what I've read, it's about the ritual of having a drink, and low/no alcohol options allow most of those rituals to stay in tact to some extent. And sometimes the flavors are definitely interesting. I had a low (hard) apple cider in Montreal, and honestly it tasted closer to a sour beer with apple notes. It was not what I expected...but also not that bad. I still feel reasonably relaxed after having it but woke up perfectly fine the next morning.

Political campaign bumper stickers on cars. Yes, I know bumper stickers go on cars, but political campaigns tend to have a, um, pretty short shelf life? Even if your candidate wins, it's just weird telling everyone who you voted for 20 years later. (But maybe it's not that bad once the sticker fades enough.)

Having to use an authenticator on non-sensitive log ins. Mostly things for work.

I enjoy beer for the taste - specifically to pair with certain dishes - and like having a non alcohol version.

According to Tom Holland, the point is that you can go to the pub and not feel left out.

Do you speak multiple languages?

(Anonymous) 2024-10-24 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
If yes, how easy were they for you to learn? Do you have any favourites? Any recommended apps/resources?

I'm currently learning Japanese. It's my first time learning a language and the progression from "what is that, where are my notes" to "oh I can just read/write that now" is just so rewarding and satisfying. I'd love to learn more languages if I can.

Well? No. But I can watch a Nick Jr show in Spanish and mostly follow along. Learned from Duolingo and coworkers.

I wish. I've taken years of Spanish and I still struggle to have a basic conversation. I really wish languages came easy to me.

No and that saddens me.

I used to speak broken Spanish (meaning when I was in Spain I couod converse in very simple ways with locals but it was not great. My understanding both vocal and written has always been better.) but it has been years since I used it and it is lost except for random vocabulary.

Currently I am trying to brush up on basic French (I learned it eons ago in High School) and again, I know vocab but can barely use it properly with grammar in a sentence.

My memory and retention is kind of shot so it is not going well.

Nope. Took Spanish and Italian in schools but I can only manage a few phrases here or there. And I guess I can pronounce words better than nonspeakers, though nowhere near as good as a native speaker.

Tried some Japanese self-study and made better progress than when I was learning other languages in school. Unfortunately, life got in the way and I stopped and lost most of what I learned, and haven't picked it back up.

Yes, and they were hard to learn, but it feels great when I notice I've improved. It's a little bit easier with multiple languages, I find, because I can compare and understand how they work a little bit better. When I only spoke English and I came across a concept that English doesn't have it was a steeper learning curve.

One thing I really wish is that people wouldn't think that they don't have a "talent" for languages and that it's not worth trying, because it is difficult for everyone, so no one should get discouraged or feel bad about themselves. It just takes a lot of time.

I’m bilingual and English is my second language. I learned it when I was really little and don’t remember the specifics, but my mom said I learned it through Sesame Street. I took four years of French in high school and it was difficult, but fun because I love how French sounds. I understand it better when I read it, but can’t speak more than a handful of phrases and can’t really understand it when it’s spoken. I like to watch stuff dubbed in French so I don’t completely forget it.

I speak my own language and then I learned English in school.

I've taken lots of aptitude tests that all said I was supposed to be really good at learning languages. I didn't do well in any foreign language classes I took.

Speak, no, but I used to be quite good at reading Latin and I could probably pick it up again if I put time into it.

Yes. My language, English, German (a bit I am quite shit at it). Sadly it's been difficult learning anything lately and I don't enjoy apps

Yes. I speak and read Russian, Spanish, and English. My advice is to keep on trying, because a lot of people try one language and then find out it is too hard or doesn't click, and give up. I tried French in High School and it never clicked, I still can't speak it, same with German and Farsi. They just didn't click with me. I kept on sampling languages until something did though.

Yes, my native language, English and a bit of Spanish. Spanish was easy to learn because it's a Romance language like my native one and I only had to learn a few new phones but lack of practice means I can read it well now but hardly speak it. English was also easy to learn because I found it so much simpler than my own language but it has many more new phones that took a longer time to get right.

As for resources, I think it depends on what you want to learn and how. I like learning about grammar for example so resources which focus on learning phrases aren't really my thing.
