Eh, it was unhinged and she should have apologized. But also, it can be hard to tell when people make art what is the intention. If you didn't know that the purpose of the art was to make it closer to the musical poster, you might be like "...Why did you do this??"

Erivo's reaction was an overreaction and she should have apologized for it once the artist explained and apologized. But also the internet's reaction to her reaction has been a huge overreaction too, and people need to just let it go. Someone flipping out over a photoshop involving their image that they misunderstood the intention of is... a really tiny thing in the grand scheme of things.

Nope, the internet's reaction to her overreaction was pretty fitting considering what she did was basically abusing her power to intentionally sic all kinds of assholes on this tiny fan account (who wasn't even the one to make the edit) while also making herself look like the biggest time deaf asshole.

Man, either you have just not seen the full extent of the internet's reaction to her post or you need to, like, touch grass and get a proper sense of scale. People are out here making tons of videos flipping out about this at length. Hours and hours spent tearing apart one very minor celebrity who was a dick and made a fool of herself one time on the internet. Even your phrasing of "abusing her power" -- jesus, she saw something that upset her and explained (melodramatically) why it upset her and made a fan who didn't deserve to feel bad about their art feel bad about their art and didn't take it back when she was wrong. That isn't "abusing her power" -- it is her being a dick and making a fool of herself in public. The response has not been proportional at all and your framing of it is part of the overreaction to her overreaction. It's all the same phenomenon. You can rake her across the coals for it or you can move on with your life.

It IS abusing her power though, even if she did it involuntarily. And she didn't make a fan "feel bad about their art", she made a completely unrelated person who just reblogged the edit get death threats and doxing attempts and never apologised for it. She deserves getting sneering videos made about her, because that's much less harmful than what she did to that fan account and she actually brought it on herself.

This. There's a HUGE difference between a celebrity being an asshole on main and some tiny little Joe Schmoe doing the same thing.

I don’t think falsely claiming erasure is a really tiny thing. I think it hurts real victims and helps bigots pretend it doesn’t happen and never has.

And frankly, anyone in this movie who didn’t instantly grasp the intention of the fan art is incredibly stupid and should switch careers.

I think it is, actually. I think a lot of speech acts are. Also, she doesn't speak for everyone who has ever suffered oppression/erasure/whatever and if someone thinks she does, they are giving way more weight to one woman's words than they should.

And I'm not arguing that she wasn't an idiot. I just think people should spend a lot less of their free time ruminating on the missteps of idiots in the world.

I think it’s harmful when it’s widely reported, like this has been.

But agree, she doesn’t deserve the attention.

* If people who aren't even fans of the musical can tell the edit was meant to be an homage to the musical poster, why is the star of said musical so clueless?

* Let's say that okay, Erivo, despite being the star of the musical, had no idea what the previous poster looked like and didn't realize the edit was done to make the promo picture look similar to the poster. Looking objectively at the edit, the main changes were: lower the hat brim, give her red lipstick, make Ariana Grande's hand cover slightly more of her face. It's still a big jump to say "I'm being erased!!!!!" by those changes.

* The internet is reacting that way because her initial overreaction was rather OTP. If she'd registered a more rational disappointment with the edit and laid out her reasons in a civil fashion, people would not be making fun of her now.

Note: Erivo's own words make it clear that she is aware of the original poster, so she must be aware of the reasoning behind the edit, yet she's still reacting like someone pissed in her cornflakes. Saying it's "the wildest, most offensive thing I have seen" makes Erivo sound like she lives an extremely sheltered life, or... she's exaggerating and looking for reasons to be offended.
