Same, both read and create. It's just a self-expression kind of thing for me.

I do this sometimes, and for me, there's a few different reasons:
1) Reminding myself that it could be worse and so my situation may be bad, but it's not that bad.
2) Sometimes I really like to dig into my anger or sadness, be there in it in the fic and be angry or sad for another reason that I can let go after the end of the fic in a mini-catharsis. This sadly doesn't work for anxiety - that piles on top and makes mine worse and I have to stop reading.
3) There's something comforting about being able to put it down and stop for a while (or forever) if it gets too much. It's not really something I can do with my life and the sense of control over this feels like a bit of a solace.

been there. it wasn't so much about 'hey my life is better in comparison' or 'I want to wallow in my misery' but 'happy cheerful narratives and characters don't resonate with me, I can't connect to these emotions and get something from them, whereas grimdark angsty shit is something I can relate to and at least feel _something_ even if it's unhappy'. I didn't want to make my misery worse and cheering up wasn't working at all, so it was more of searching for emotions I was already feeling but wrapped in a show/book/fic.

I live in a very small, rural town where it's normal to look at other people driving (when you're in town) and wave to them. Every time I move to the city I have to absolutely crush this instinct because everyone is picking their noses/ear/fiddling with their hair/on the phone (which is illegal here). So I have to say that, unless you see one rural driver who is quickly looking away and feeling bad, absolutely nobody is looking at other people in their cars or expecting anyone else to look!

If you're the same dude that was obsessed with "pheromones" or whatever about this character before, this is clearly bothering you long term for some reason. Relax. It's a random video game character. It doesn't make you suddenly gay in real life.

And even if you did turn out to be 90% straight and 10% bi in real life, who cares? Plenty of people like that out there. Life's more fun when you just like what you like without needing to add 50 disclaimers about it.
