Vent - anti-technology parents

(Anonymous) 2024-11-07 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
So I was working for a small business that was really hit hard by the pandemic. Things kept getting worse and worse until finally they couldn't afford to pay me anymore, so now I'm looking for a job. It's a super niche field that I can't find any openings in, but I keep applying for everything remotely similar that I feel like my skills could transfer to. Anyway, things are mostly online, and whenever the subject comes up, my parents get really annoyed with me and are like "you just need to print your resume and go to places and hand it to people in person" and don't seem to understand/believe me when I say that that's not how it's done nowadays. They're like "in our day, you walk up to the store on the corner and they do an interview with you right then and they hire you that day" and...THAT'S NOT HOW IT WORKS ANYMORE.

And in general, anything related to the internet makes them mad...in their own "I don't understand how this technology works" kind of way (my mom getting upset with her phone because she doesn't understand how updates work, or constantly calling me when she's on her computer and clicked the wrong thing and messed something up and it's the simplest fucking thing ever to fix), and also whenever I make any reference to it. They learned about bots and now they're convinced every person on the internet is a bot. I'll mention I read a comment online about xyz and she (I keep saying 'they' but to be fair it's mainly my mom, my dad's somewhat better on these things) will be like "oh, that was probably a bot/why do you talk to them/I don't want to hear about it [because I don't understand it/it scares me]" yet if I say that that exact same comment was made by someone I talked to in line at the grocery store then she'll react like a normal human being.

The thing is, I'm in my 30s and they're in their 60s...they're not that damn old, I know there are people their age that work jobs in technology. My mother acts like she's 100 and grew up without electricity and anything new and different than what she's used to is horrible and scary.

Anyway. I know this is incredibly dumb but I just had to get it off my chest.

I'm near 40 and my parents are 71 and 80 respectively. I get this sentiment so much, especially when when I started looking for work, canvassing was still a thing that happened. Now it's online and I have to tell my mother (71) that there's no jobs that reflect my specific skill set (admin) and she doesn't fucking get it.

If I didn't know better I'd swear you were my sister. My parents said this crap to me ALL THE TIME.

My sympathies! My parents are nearly 80 and are very switched-on technologically, and it is honestly fantastic. My dad was always into computers, my mum wasn't but having grandkids and needing to access grandkid pictures immediately converted her.

My parents were really anti-technology until they realized they could watch all their favorite shows whenever they wanted and FaceTime all their relatives that lived far away. They still don't know how to log into their work's website to see their check stubs though and are stubborn as hell about learning how to do it no matter how many times I show them how. Neither one knows how to use a computer though and it's kinda funny 'cause their computer literacy is almost the same as the Gen Z kids I work with.

Oh god, my parents are the same re: job applications. What's silly is that my dad is no stranger to the internet, but refuses to admit that the last time he had to apply to a job was 30+ years ago. My mom is worse - she's been a SAHM for yoinks and has never so much as touched a job application, but she's adamant that I should show up during business hours and ask to speak to the manager so I can fill out an application, interview on the spot and show them what a plucky go-getter I am! And to top it off, I should also offer to work for FREE on probation for two weeks and then if they think I did a good job, they'd hire me. Just like that, so easy! She doesn't understand why I don't go and snap up all the high paying jobs that are lying around waiting for people who want to work.

Apply for things that are not your superniche field too. Bars, restaurants, and Amazon are always hiring. And those do respond to dropping a paper resume off. They don't keep 'em on file, first person in the door with a resume when the manager needs new staff gets the job. So your parents are right, print it off, put the shoeleather on the sidewalk, and get off your ass and get a job. Any job.

"Get any job" isn't necessarily helpful advice when we don't know what their field even is, they might not be able to do just any job.

Dude, don't be one of Those Boomers. OP said they're already branching out in terms of job applications, which is the sensible approach. Advising them to desperately apply to any job that will take someone with a pulse is insulting, given you don't know their situation or what they need.

And come on, that part about printing off a job application is laughable. Are YOU gainfully employed right now? What do you do for a living? Did you get this job by printing off a job application and handing it some rando working at your current employer?

Do better.

My folks, in the 60's, have apparently given up. I tell them to switch to Firefox and they want me to come over and do it for them. What has happened? How do I avoid this as I age?!?!

This drives me crazy, especially with my dad. My mom never had a connection to tech and is fairly clueless but she learned to do the basics with a laptop and her phone.
My dad actually HAS some tech background and does know some things but he's sometimes so clueless about certain things that I have to suspect he's just being wilfully obtuse. He's had access to the internet ever since it was available for home use but he still doesn't (want to) understand that when he has an issue, the first thing you can do is google that issue for troubleshooting. He just prefers to whine about it constantly without trying to even look it up and fix it.

DA
Basically same. My mom is okay with tech.
My father is just ridiculously bad. At this point it's unbelievable because we had internet since fucking 90s

My sympathies. I think people just get anxious about learning new things as they get older. Not everyone, of course. But unless your parents have some serious cognitive issues, they can certainly manage switching to Firefox. They just... don't want to. It's a kind of learned helplessness.
