Spinal Taps

[personal profile] philstar22 2024-11-28 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Has anyone else around here ever had a spinal tap? My neurologist wants me to get one. I'm kind of scared.

Be well hydrated. It helps, a lot, because most of the headache is dehydration. They should numb you well, and it shouldn’t hurt. If it does, tell them! Mostly what you’ll feel is pressure.

like other anon says, it's mostly pressure. mine HURT for a split second with the actual shunt thing went in but after that it was like a numb sort of pressure again. your back is going to be SORE for a few days (I think it took me a week to feel normal again). but it wasn't as scary as I thought it was going to be and they let someone come back with me and hold my hands which was really nice.

Yes, I was very scared, but it was actually ok. They explained everything really well, I was numbed up, there was pain but very briefly. I mostly remember really needing to pee, because I was so well hydrated before hand!

It went to eleven.

I had one. I did some googling beforehand and thought I would be able to sit on a chair backwards but no, they asked me to curl into a ball on a narrow hospital bed. But it went well, I cursed at the pain but a nice nurse stroked my shoulder while the doctor did the tap. I asked to see the fluid sample afterwards :D

The headache afterwards was intense tho. I was told that caffeine helps with it so I drank energy drinks (and lots of water.) Be prepared to be out of commission the next day at least. My sister who had the same procedure went to get relief for her headache the following day, (I don't remember what it was, some sort of injection maybe?) but I just stayed home and slept.

All in all, it was scary, but the tap itself was over quickly! Best of luck for you <3
Oh and DO NOT watch The Substance before...

What exactly counts as a slow burn in fanfic? I'm currently writing one that's gonna be around forty chapters and the characters don't get together until chapter thirty, but there's a lot of flirting and teasing before then. I just don't want to tag it wrong.

That is def a slowburn.

+1

Yeah, definitely slow burn. Basically, I'd say if the couple doesn't actually get together for at least two thirds of the length of the story, it's a slow burn.

That is absolutely slow burn. If they dont get together by the halfway point I would wager it is slow burn.
