I enjoy my share of crossovers, but I also think the serious ones are rarely done well.

Regarding Sonic, I just think Japan loves to crossover anything. Another Eden is full of crossovers.

I'm not big on canon crossovers unless it makes sense in some way (I hate to use it as an example, but the Fairly Oddparents and Jimmy Neutron crossover, for example). Even fandom crossovers are a no unless it's limited to two similar fandoms that would mesh well. A lot of times crossovers just feel like... too much cake? It only really works in little slices.

I like crossovers. I like fusions too. Some aren't well done, but sometimes you get two great tastes that that taste great together. I'm reading Spider-Man in Gotham fic right now. Dark chocolate brownies with lots of nuts, swirled with sticky caramel, yum.

What a strange thing to have physical revulsion about. I get why this is a secret.

(Anonymous) 2024-12-18 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, people have had physical revulsions to stranger things. I remember there were several secrets lately where people were repulsed by fictional furries/animal-people/anthros . Others feel repulsed by certain types of ships (eg interracial/species, enemies to lovers, childhood friends)

(Anonymous) 2024-12-18 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
I find those all more normal (for lack of a better word) than an entire genre though.

AYART. I've met people who loathed fantasy/scifi/romance/coffee shop aus/highschool aus in general to the point of revulsion.
Hell I have a friend who despised BOTH Fantasy and Scifi because he doesn't like unrealistic things. He actually feels repulsed by them because of the unrealistic aspects (suspension of disbelief) . He only likes franchises with more grounded/realistic settings : Dexter, brooklyn 99, Grand Theft Auto, Max Payne and Hitman

NAYART

I hate Anime as a whole. The animation generally makes me uncomfortable and I generally really dislike the artstyles. Also not a fan of the high pitched voices of most of the female characters (it's not cute at all) or fanservice . I find what anime considers to be cute (weak submissive females that act like children) to be annoying.
Also doesn't help at all that I had some really bad experiences with hardcore anime fans/weeaboos in the past

da

Nah, I get this secret, because I'm hugely biased against crossovers, too. Yes, the entire genre.

I've been reading fanfic for decades, and I can think of maybe ... three crossovers in that entire time that didn't make me go "why am I doing this to myself?" and backbutton out after a few chapters in utter exasperation.

It's like when someone believes they can multi-task, but from the point of view of another person, they're just managing to screw up both tasks badly. I get that other people apparently find this sort of fic deeply enjoyable (and more power to them, truly), but to me, it's a heartfelt source of Does Not Want.

I like crossovers as long as they're treated like one-off fun events that are totally not canon to either universe, which is usually the case so most are fine. Idk how you'd take or treat a real crossover 'seriously'.

Half-crossover AUs where the cast of one canon were born in another canon's world and were always there, are fun and pretty easy to do seriously though. Without all the scrambling around trying to explain how the mechanics of two different universes colliding works

(Anonymous) 2024-12-18 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Crossovers are very much a "You do you" thing for me - as long as they can exist in their own section where I don't have to interact with them, I'm fine with them. The idea of official crossovers bug me to no end for this reason, especially when they're considered canon for some unimaginable reason. (looking at you, BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle)

(Anonymous) 2024-12-18 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm not a fan unless they've actually got something original going on (Archie vs Punisher for example). And that's way too rare. I especially hate "multiverse" crossovers from a single company, looking at you, MCU. They're the cheapest form of no-consequence crossover of all.

(Anonymous) 2024-12-18 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
SA Though I should say that there are certainly good fanfic crossovers, precisely because they've got something to say. Though, as always, there's vastly more terrible ones.

I'm the total opposite. I love crossovers. More than one or even all of my favorite universes all together in one place? Sign me up.

(Anonymous) 2024-12-18 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Big same.

Yeah there are a lot of low quality ones out there, but that is true of any trope in general.

[personal profile] philstar22 2024-12-18 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Very true.

(Anonymous) 2024-12-18 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
I love crossovers (and fusions) but it has to make *sense*. If you're crossing Harry Potter with a sci-fi show, I'm going to nope out. One is supposed to be science-y, the other is magic, and my brain just doesn't want to cross the streams.

(Anonymous) 2024-12-18 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Big agree! I love crossovers but I dont like it when authors just mash their faves together with no logic or sense.

Although I will say I once read a SG1/Sailor Moon crossover that was "crack treated seriously" and it somehow worked. I guess there is just an exception to every rule.

(Anonymous) 2024-12-18 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
Same here. When two clashing universes crossover (eg Berserk and Gundam or My Little Pony and Hannibal, ew) my brain turns off and I refuse to read/watch it. I don't care how good it is, I'm not reading it. It just really stretches my suspension of disbelief.

I'm cool with clashing universes when the author makes it work. It takes a lot more effort, and most of the time they don't manage it. But when they do manage to make it work, the crossover is extra fun for me.

(Anonymous) 2024-12-18 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
Crossovers are always going to be one of those most are terrible, some are good, a few are GREAT things...

Oh, wait, that's fic in general.

Honestly, so long as you're not harassing people who are having fun, if you don't like them, that's cool.

I liked crossovers a lot when I was a kid because they weren't just two franchises meeting up together that made Little Kid Me squeal (I was all over that Power Rangers/TMNT crossover special, for example), they were rare, so it felt more special and epic.

Nowadays, I kind of audibly groan at crossovers because it feels like it's pre-attached to whatever Extended Universe/Cinematic Universe/Whateververse and it's EVERYWHERE and that specialness just doesn't feel, well, "special" anymore.

(Anonymous) 2024-12-18 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
I've never liked crossovers either. The vast majority of them are poorly done (90% in my book) or flat out boring. especially ones that involve more than 3 fandoms (99% of those are total garbage). I find it hard to pay attention to the plot or the characters if there are 3 or more fandoms involved . Everything is just so cluttered
