What phobias do you have?

The usual? Unusual ones?

Heights is the biggest one for me. And especially flying.

I don't know what to call it, but a phobia about being forced asleep/unconcious. Like with sleeping meds or anesthesia, or anything that forces me to go to sleep.

Snakes. Even thinking about phonias makes me think of snakes and now I’ll be driving myself crazy imagining them coming out of imaginary hiding places to get me.

Heights.
Large, fierce dogs.
Caves.

speaking of caves I have really bad claustrophobia due to getting stuck in a crawlspace for several hours when I was a kid.

Don't know if it's an official phobia, but roaches.

I can barely handle flying, like I have to be basically comatose and be poured bonelessly into my seat. Only way I don't have a full crisis. Thanks a lot, Final Destination.

This is me pretty much. I dose myself up with benadryl after actually trying not to sleep the night before. And I try to sleep and zone out with my ipod music. I still panic, especially on takeoff.

Weirdly, I'm more scared of the plane flipping than crashing, mostly due to my vertigo. When a plane turns, it genuinely feels to me like it is going much farther, and steep turns do feel like it is flipping.

I avoid flying as much as possible. I'll happily drive 2-3 days over flying.

Roaches fuck me up more than stinging insects or spiders.

Maybe it's trauma from ny early living situations in run down apartments and crappy duplexes, but they just make my soul retch and my skin crawl.

I used to have a terrible phobia of big dogs, but then I got to know and love my wife's dog, and now I want a big, goofy baby of my own.

Maybe not phobia, but exaggerated caution? I get really nervous around drunk men. Super uncomfortable, anxious and on-edge. I hate it.

I really dislike having an open door right at my back.

Oh, god, me too! I just can't do it, especially in restaurants when I'll be sitting for long periods of time!

Heights. Enclosed spaces.

Something similar to submechanophobia. That's the closest thing I've seen with a name, and I relate to aspects of it. My fear though is more specifically like of waterworks and pipes, drains, stuff like that. I'm not sure why, I've always had a childhood fear of running water and drains, to the point where as a child I was terrified to flush the toilet. Once I visited a large dam and had nightmares about the experience for years. Thankfully I got over that and am able to flush the toilet without problems and take baths and such, and I've managed the phobia by learning more about water infrastructure so I can see it in a more positive light instead of just something scary. I'm not scared of the ocean or water in general at all. Water parks make me really anxious.

I know this sounds weird and specific, sorry, it's hard to explain. I consider it a phobia because I've panicked over it and it used to affect my life in embarrassing ways but now it's not really a problem, though I still get uneasy seeing stuff that triggers it like if I visit a reservoir.

Needles. I can't watch it on tv/movies, and I get lightheaded and woozy when at the doctor's office.

Oh hard same, and it's so embarrassing at the doctor's office. I have to tell them, yes this is silly and yes, I know it doesn't hurt, but it grosses me out so much that I have to try hard not to pass out.

And it's just veins. I don't have a problem with shots. That vein in the crook of the arm? AGGGGHH don't even touch me there. I don't even want my blood pressure taken there. I'm gagging just thinking about it.

Trypophobia (so clusters of holes or dots) and it makes me angry when people dismiss this as an internet thing, because I remember the exact moment it started and that was at a school camp in 1984.

Like the comment OP , I have a major heights phobia. ALL the way back in 2010 when we were about to move out of one house my dad stood on the balcony overlook to fix some of the ceiling and when I saw it I was so freaked out I had to go outside for like a few hours til he was done. Didn't matter that it was like 9 pm I just.. had to step out.

I think part of stuff like that where i get freaked out on behalf of other people in situations (especially in close proximity to ME) is that I suffered from intense bouts of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder since I was a young child And for a while I was often convinced to do things sometimes despite harm to myself just to make the anxiety stop . And despite the fact I'd started to get....somewhat better I still had issues and weak moments. So I guess what I would ne afraid of and what would play in my head sometimes even remembering that is "what if in a moment of weakness in intense OCD anxiety I did something that ended up hurting/killing him?" i wouldn't WANT to and I didn't but... idk it's the thought that haunts me

tl;dr: OCD is a huge pain in the ass and it fucks with my brain.

heights, flying (more not being able to control what happens and putting my life in someone else's hands), death

Helicopters, and it's not like I grew up somewhere where that was a legitimate fear for whatever reason. Even now as an adult, sometimes when one goes by overhead I go and stand under a tree or an overhang, and I did the same thing as a toddler. Planes don't freak me out the same way, although turbulence does. But turbulence makes me dizzy and want to puke the same way rollercoasters do, so I don't think of it as a phobia.

Heights, needles, open spaces behind me, water (from the ocean to showers), all insects/arachnids, sleeping, death. Jellyfish of all things. Crocodiles.

Fish. The idea of swimming and them touching me just really freaks me out, it's mainly a texture thing, like I couldn't handle slimy things touching me. And thanks to a podcast I just listened to, apparently they bite nipples too so that's a new fear lol.

Crabs. And generally all crustaceans. I can't even watch videos or look at pictures. Recently, I was scrolling through Insta reels and there was a video with a crab and I couldn't touch the screen to get rid of it. Show me a picture of a Japanese spider crab and my day is ruined.
Also I think I may have at least a mild form of thalassophobia and megalophobia. Which meant that both Subnautica and Shadow of the Colossus basically were horror games for me. I still loved them because I like horror but damn it was stressful. That underwater colossus? Just the worst.

Germs

(Anonymous) 2025-01-23 02:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Germs. Not viruses, incredibly enough, which was kind of hilarious because during covid.
I was mostly chill during the peak of Covid emergency because it was a virus, not a germ, and I was used to the anxiety of potentially dying if I touched something even remotely dirty so yeah, no big deal for me, BUT THEN everyone got fucking insane were I lived and the bought all the anti-germs soap I was used to. That freaked me out. One because I was without my soap adnd two because it meant not only basically everyone NEVER washed their hands but they didn’t even posses an anti-germ soap in the first place. What the fuck....
The fact that people had to remind themselves to wash their hands when they came home after a day of work/outdoor or after using the toilet WHAT THE FUCK

I'm also afraid of needles. Like, I can't watch them on movies and stuff like another anon said, but I regularly get my vaccines and stuff. I just turn my head like I'm the exorcised girl.
