I love ANYTHING by Brian Evenson. His short stories are so weird. Samanta Schweblin also has some surreal horror collections.

For fun, I try to unpack its symbolism and message, but honestly a lot of it is weird for weird's sake.

Ohhh Twin Peaks, for sure. Especially season 3 in terms of the level of absurdity and in particular the way Kyle McLachlan and Naomi Watts absolutely reveled in the absurdity of their characters. I'd do a rewatch of season 3 if I weren't still mourning so badly.

obligatory Monty Python but I gotta shout out American Dad's occasional absurdist trip. Between seasons 9 and 15 they were almost all surreal in some way but prior to that it was the holiday episodes and they're the best, probably because instead of the absurd being the standard, it was a nice treat in juxtaposition to the actual scripted sitcom-style series. But the later seasons have episodes like Jeff slowly turning into Guy Fieri due to demon possession and I loooooolllled it was so absurdist good.

I think I'm always going to have a soft spot for The Mighty Boosh and Noel Fielding's Luxury Comedy. I know its dated, but it still makes me giggle and I love the cheap costumes and sets.

I have a lot of those, but right now I have a really soft spot for Briarpatch - I don't think a lot of people heard of this show, but I love it, it's a bit surreal daylight noir

Tuca and Bertie. It handles some heavy subjects (CSA, workplace harassment, gentrification) very gracefully but it also has buildings with boobs, sentient moss, gravity-defying turtles and snakes as subway trains.

What is everyone doing?

We will FINALLY be out of (below) freezing weather so I'm really looking forward to going on some walks this weekend. Other than that, starting a new book and hoping to get some crocheting done. Plus playing with my sister as usual.

Good to hear your weather finally caught up with the calendar. Are you working on any specific crochet project?

I have to do some writing, so I'll probably put that off all weekend LOL. I just got a pair of jeans that fit PERFECTLY other than the length, so I'm going to hem those tomorrow. Also need to take the dog for an extra-long walk because it's been extra wintry here, too, and she's been horrifically cheated in that regard, poor baby.

Tomorrow I'm going out with my sisters. It's probably going to be on the cold side, but if the weather is good enough we want to take a stroll in the countryside. Then it's family dinner with my parents, nephew and uncles. It's going to be fun, but also emotionally taxing. So Sunday I will just spend the day by myself drawing and maybe rewatching the first Captain America movie. I need corny shit and miss "good" super hero movies.

Tomorrow, we're going to the home opener game of my state's soccer team. We got back one of our beloved former players from Newcastle in the EPL. It's going to be a blast welcoming him back - I know the stadium will be nuts.

Sunday, we're going to a cat convention/cat show.

Resisting the urge to punch things. Getting a massage and mani/pedi tomorrow. Need it badly. Sunday my church is doing a table on immigration, handing out "know your rights" cards. I'll be sitting there all morning, answering any questions.

I’m making some throw pillows and possibly making curtains for the two oddly sized windows in the den. I’d rather just buy some but I have the perfect valances already (found a few years ago in a thrift shop) and I need something that will go with them.

Other than that, I’m making my way through a series of lectures on Vikings through The Great Courses on Hoopla. Hopefully I can listen to the lectures while I do all my embroidery and sewing but it rarely works out that way for me.

Was going to go over to my in-laws tomorrow to help with house chores, but they're sick. Will probably spend the time doing house chores and planning out this year's garden - hopefully baking some bread, too!

Monday is going to suck for a lot of reasons probably, so I am going to use this weekend to distract me.
We are having decent winter at last, so I just need to do some good park walking. Also I have two galleries in mind, I need to use my new sparkling license (permit?) that gives me free pass.

I am going to a (local) musical✨ We are not exactly famous for musical theatre, this one is promised to be delightfully weird

For my non-political vent of the day, they keep being extra difficult on my dad's probate. Now they are claiming that the inventory has some errors and needs to be done. The judge had already said everything was okay. They already accepted it. But then sent it back. Again. And they keep changing what they want. I don't even know what is going on right now. Mom and I are tired of it. Our attorney is tired of it. It is all so pointless and difficult.

I'm terrified right now.

I had my first mammogram, and they want me to come back. They said my breast tissue is dense, and therefore more prone to cancerous growths. They also found "focal asymmetry" in my left breast.

I'm trying to be brave, and casual, and reasonable, but I'd be lying if I'm not going to be worried until I get back in the doctor's office for an additional screening like they want me to.

Much smaller-stakes than the other vents…

I’ve been feeling a bit less self-loathing about my appearance after getting back to healthier habits and losing a bit of weight. Today I went to the drug store to get passport photos taken and I was preparing myself to not like how I look, but accept it anyway and not let it stop me from doing this important thing.

But they’re absolutely awful. I thought I looked better than that, just from what I see in the mirror.

Just sucks to be reminded that that’s what I actually look like to people.

Anon who asked for advice on caregiving for a friend post-surgery last week (thanks for the kind responses!)

Things are mostly going well, friend is recovering normally but has had a few complications where we had to go back to the hospital and stay overnight, gotta do medications around the clock too, so we haven't been sleeping much. Taking it one thing at a time. Trying to keep a sense of humor about things and take breaks when I can. I'm feeling like a zombie. Venting here so I can keep it positive offline lol, I hate the fucking hospital and if we have to go back AGAIN I'm gonna be sad.

I'm currently reading A Dowry of Blood by S.T. Gibson, which is about Dracula's first wife and the relationship she had with Dracula.
Also Ponyboy by Eliot Duncan, which is about a 20-something year old transmasc college student in France - a bit odd but I want to see it through to the end.
