The fandom is pretty meh. A lot of sexist, gross men who take things too seriously and don't get the humor of the ridiculousness of the lore.

(Anonymous) 2025-06-26 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it’s more likely that the audience who enjoyed it at the time aren’t active in fandom spaces in large numbers and modern fandom isn’t into the show.

(Anonymous) 2025-06-26 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I feel like the same thing happened with Friends a few years ago. A bunch of kids found the show and said they didn't know why it was so popular because everyone was so mean. I'm seeing the same criticism of Seinfeld, "everyone is so mean!" It is a very 90s type of humor (of which I enjoy).

AYRT - ugh that tracks but is disappointing. There are so many video games that I get into and then look at the fandom and just slowly back away from, disappointed.

OP

Funny, if people ask for recs with no context on what they like, I figure they deserve the no context answers they get.

If it’s “what’s the best X”, I treat that as a discussion prompt. Don’t just say the name of a thing, squeeze out a sentence fragment – an adjective even! – about why it’s so great.

World War Z was horrible and I'm sad we will probably never get a faithful adaptation. I also really hated the The Giver adaptation. Just....awful.

The Schindler's List movie was great. The book is good but can be a bit of a slog. My Sister's Keeper completely changed the ending of the book and made it 100 times better.

No. Downvotes all the way down!

I liked Ella Enchanted (I'll admit never read the book though) but that movie introduced me to Hugh Dancy 😍

I love the movies but for the life of me I can't finish the series b/c of Tolkien's writing.

(Anonymous) 2025-06-26 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
For those wondering, Jerry Seinfeld had a teenaged high school student girlfriend when he was 39. It was legal because New York doesn’t have laws that protect minor children from adult sexual predators, just a minimum age of consent. She was chasing a celebrity and he got a kid as girlfriend so it was a win-win for them.

Exactly. You’re just farming upvotes because you were the first to say The Godfather. At least mention what you like about it.

(Anonymous) 2025-06-27 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for this. Not a Seinfeld fan, but a sucker for factual accuracy.

Re: OP

…that would be a broad topic, though. Compared to, “What series is like X?” which would invite the majority of responses to be titles without justifications.

And it still seems silly to downvote, especially because that has actual consequences. You’re the one and only asshole in that scenario.

+1
I’ve tried in so many ways to read or at least listen to the books but my god they’re boring as fuck! But the movies were gorgeous and fun and I finally got to understand what Tolkien fans love so much about Middle Earth and its stories.

I need hope. The Supreme Court decisions today are making me very, very worried.

ayrt - if I had never read the book I honestly might have liked the movie! It has a lot of things I like in movies, but it just tore the book apart and spat on it so that's a no for me.

OP

Oh, 100% silly. And probably an asshole, yeah. Though not sure about actual consequences, it feels more symbolic than anything. I’d like to think it affects what rises to the top or the answers people give, but in a big subreddit, it doesn’t move the needle at all.

I love the books and movies equally and I agree with you. His style really isn't for everyone and I am not going to argue with someone enjoying the movies more. For me I love the books for extra world-building and lore.

(Anonymous) 2025-06-27 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
This secret made me melancholy for some reason... without context I can't say if you're holding yourself back from fun out of shyness, or if you've recognized a potentially dangerous trait in how you get when you drink, and taken care to avoid it. Either way, it sounds a bit sad to reflect on.

The Witcher

(Anonymous) 2025-06-27 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
I despised the Netflix show. And I wouldn’t have cared at all except the showrunner and studio both invested a lot of time and money into promoting it as a faithful adaptation. I’m super happy that it will ultimately go down as a major failure and the showrunner’s reputation is damaged.

AYRT
Yeah in a big subreddit it really doesn’t have any impact. And in this thread I’m the one and only asshole so I apologize. I got downvoted to hell for giving a straight answer to a direct question and because I have never farmed karma it fucked me over bad. I can’t engage on subs where I’ve been active before and I admit I’m incredibly bitter and projecting. For that I am sorry.

Pretty sure Henry Cavill agrees with you!

I think I could enjoy it, but I’d have to pretend it wasn’t connected to the books except in name. Maybe like a spin-off, you know?

(Anonymous) 2025-06-27 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Oh man, yes. Never read Great Gatsby, but I definitely can relate not liking to drink because I don't want to lose control of how I behave and it tends to heighten my anxiety over being perceived.
