I'm not a fan of vampire!AUs, they are just not my thing at all. Sentinel/Guide AUs always seem so boring.
But I HATE Hanahaki!AUs. They are just miscommunication to the extreme, which is a trope I can't stand.

(Anonymous) 2025-08-13 12:25 am (UTC)(link)But no it's always boring childhood friends who are both single and available and nothing at all is stopping anything from happening besides people being drama

(Anonymous) 2025-08-13 01:48 am (UTC)(link)I actually read one like that! It ended with the character dying cause he didn't love her that way, and never had.

WHAT AUs DO YOU HATE!
Re: WHAT AUs DO YOU HATE!
(Anonymous) 2025-08-13 01:44 am (UTC)(link)College AUs for non-American fandoms because they mean university, not "college".

(Anonymous) 2025-08-13 01:08 am (UTC)(link)Unfortunately there are so very many crappy ones that a good one is rather like an gemstone hidden in the muck.

(Anonymous) 2025-08-13 01:31 am (UTC)(link)Modern AUs for fantasy settings can be interesting if the author actually takes the time to think about how the modern world would be different from the current one given the fantasy history or come up with a good world changing or plot reason (not just "the magic died") for the fantasy part to be gone. There's one in particular that I love where the author goes into detail in the authors notes about their choices and how they bridged the gap.

(Anonymous) 2025-08-13 12:55 am (UTC)(link)Same with vampires. They're just boring to me. I like the vague idea of Sentinel/Guide AUs but I've rarely read any that were in character or interesting.
I also had Omegaverse and D/s world AUs. There are exceptions, but generally I hate the idea of biological assigned roles. I am all about choice and these just strip everything away and make people slaves to their bodies. I understand that's the whole draw for a lot of people, but it is a big nope for me. And they usually have icky gendered stereotypes hiding all over the place. Just not my thing at all.

(Anonymous) 2025-08-13 12:55 am (UTC)(link)Hanahaki!AUs are freaking hilarious to me. Every time I see one of those I have war flashes to the last 2000s, when I was heavily in Japanese fandoms and stuff like that were pretty common.
Soulmates!AU are incredibly boring to me because I like the idea of two characters CHOOSING each other, especially if their canon circumstances doom them/want them apart for some reason. The idea of them being "fated" to each other is the opposite of romantic for me.
Also Modern AUs are just boring if there is no link to canon, like travelling to another time/universe and having to figure out how to get back while navigating our technology/societal problems.

Granted, that kind of is college to some extent, but there's just a lack of depth that's hard to put into words.

(Anonymous) 2025-08-13 01:52 am (UTC)(link)If we are going by that second definition, then, um...well, I basically hate all AUs! I like reading about my favorite characters doing things in their own world, particularly because I feel that characterization depends on context, and so changing the context changes the character. When I've tried to give AUs a chance, this belief has been affirmed, as the characters have felt OOC.

(Anonymous) 2025-08-13 02:46 am (UTC)(link)I like quite a few Soulmate AUs, but I cannot with the colorblind until you see your soulmate ones (for real, there would be so many differences and it trips me up so much when the author doesn't even make an attempt to figure out some). The ones where you have your soulmate's name on your body somewhere and it somehow hasn't affected naming conventions one bit make me roll my eyes, but I still read them (headcanoning those as the characters' parents being dicks, trolls, or great believers in free will).
While I can read ABO AUs if I'm in the right mood, BDSM AUs where everybody is a Dom or a Sub are a big nope for me.
Ageplay is not something that does anything for me, so I really don't go for AUs where everybody is a Big or a Little or whatever.

(Anonymous) 2025-08-13 04:08 am (UTC)(link)Modern Day AUs - They've better odds than HSAUs, but the stakes and relationships rarely transfer over to normal people
Any "Genre" AU where I know too much about the actual time period - Pirates, Knights + Princes, but ironically not Coyboys/Wild West or Ancient Rome. On the off chance somebody makes an X-Men fic set in Ancient Rome they do their goshdarned homework for it.

(Anonymous) 2025-08-13 03:13 pm (UTC)(link)Though I have to say, for writing, I never really know what to do with the prompt 'coffee shop' (I only write for prompt list challenges like kinktober). It came up several times and once I had agents use a coffee shop to take down the bad guy and another time I asked friends on discord what would be the most outrageous coffee shop idea and got 'a black hole opens up in one of the women's bathroom stalls' and honestly, that's still one of the most hilarious fics I've written.
