Yesterday's post had me thinking, what AUs do you hate?

I'm not a fan of vampire!AUs, they are just not my thing at all. Sentinel/Guide AUs always seem so boring.

But I HATE Hanahaki!AUs. They are just miscommunication to the extreme, which is a trope I can't stand.

Hanahaki could be interesting if the premises were more diverse... like someone is in love with their best friends spouse or something and is dying of flowers but can't say.

But no it's always boring childhood friends who are both single and available and nothing at all is stopping anything from happening besides people being drama

I actually read one like that! It ended with the character dying cause he didn't love her that way, and never had.

I want some more tragic ones too. I've seen a couple where they love someone in a relationship, but it always resolves somehow.

WHAT AUs DO YOU HATE!

Should be the title.

In general, AUs where the characters don't even remotely resemble the canon characters. I sincerely wonder why they wouldn't just write an original story.

College AUs for non-American fandoms because they mean university, not "college".

Omegaverse. There are, apparently, seven basic plots; but with omegaverse, six of them never happen.

It's boring.

Most modern AU’s for fantasy settings honestly, but I have a special loathing for high school and coffee shop AU’s. I find the former to be completely uninteresting, and the latter to be so mind numbingly boring I have no idea how people read them. And I like cosy fluff fic myself but coffee shop AU’s are the ultimate ‘nothing fucking happens’ kind of fic I can’t stand.

I just don't care for modern AUs for fantasy or scifi settings. It strips almost everything I love about the source and makes it boring general audience blah to me. Same with high school or college AUs. I haven't read any in a long time but I do admit to enjoying some coffee shop AUs back in my teen days, but it is not something I'm interested in anymore.

I’m sorry, I do love a well done coffee shop AU. Not high school, wtf, but a well written coffee or bookstore AU is so comforting to me.

Unfortunately there are so very many crappy ones that a good one is rather like an gemstone hidden in the muck.

AW man, I love a modern AU in Game of Thrones.

(Anonymous) 2025-08-13 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
Same. Highschool AUs are really hard to do well and coffee shop AUs...I don't get the point. It's so boring. Like, if you want everything is great and nothing hurts you can do that in your canon... why does it have to be a coffee shop???

Modern AUs for fantasy settings can be interesting if the author actually takes the time to think about how the modern world would be different from the current one given the fantasy history or come up with a good world changing or plot reason (not just "the magic died") for the fantasy part to be gone. There's one in particular that I love where the author goes into detail in the authors notes about their choices and how they bridged the gap.

Modern AUs for scifi/fantasy fandoms. Especially coffee house AUs. They all invariably are massively OOC.

Sadly, I love them for GoT. At least for Braime fics.

Fantasy -> modern AU with magic is great, especially if they keep fantasy races as well. Mundane modern AU no thank you.

Fuuuuck Hanahaki. I hate it so much. I mean your kink is not my kink etc etc etc but omg I hate it so much.

Same with vampires. They're just boring to me. I like the vague idea of Sentinel/Guide AUs but I've rarely read any that were in character or interesting.

I also had Omegaverse and D/s world AUs. There are exceptions, but generally I hate the idea of biological assigned roles. I am all about choice and these just strip everything away and make people slaves to their bodies. I understand that's the whole draw for a lot of people, but it is a big nope for me. And they usually have icky gendered stereotypes hiding all over the place. Just not my thing at all.

ABO because it's rarely done in an interesting way (like an omega topping/domming the alpha or alpha/alpha relationships done well). It often goes into gender essentialism without meaning to and I just can't stand it. Also, wolves' genitals are not very hot for me :/

Hanahaki!AUs are freaking hilarious to me. Every time I see one of those I have war flashes to the last 2000s, when I was heavily in Japanese fandoms and stuff like that were pretty common.

Soulmates!AU are incredibly boring to me because I like the idea of two characters CHOOSING each other, especially if their canon circumstances doom them/want them apart for some reason. The idea of them being "fated" to each other is the opposite of romantic for me.

Also Modern AUs are just boring if there is no link to canon, like travelling to another time/universe and having to figure out how to get back while navigating our technology/societal problems.

College AUs. At least with highschool AUs there's this fun sort of nostalgia veneer on it that's fun to play with. But college AUs, especially when the characters are already at or around college-age, usually end up just being highschool with alcohol and swearing.

Granted, that kind of is college to some extent, but there's just a lack of depth that's hard to put into words.

All right, so...a very few people consider fix-it fic and canon-divergent fic to be AU. Most people, however, use it to literally mean "alternate universe," as in the characters have plucked out of their original world and are existing in some other time, place, and context.

If we are going by that second definition, then, um...well, I basically hate all AUs! I like reading about my favorite characters doing things in their own world, particularly because I feel that characterization depends on context, and so changing the context changes the character. When I've tried to give AUs a chance, this belief has been affirmed, as the characters have felt OOC.

Most Dystopian AUs (though if it starts with a zombie apocalypse and ends with rebuilding, that I'm generally okay with)

I like quite a few Soulmate AUs, but I cannot with the colorblind until you see your soulmate ones (for real, there would be so many differences and it trips me up so much when the author doesn't even make an attempt to figure out some). The ones where you have your soulmate's name on your body somewhere and it somehow hasn't affected naming conventions one bit make me roll my eyes, but I still read them (headcanoning those as the characters' parents being dicks, trolls, or great believers in free will).

While I can read ABO AUs if I'm in the right mood, BDSM AUs where everybody is a Dom or a Sub are a big nope for me.

Ageplay is not something that does anything for me, so I really don't go for AUs where everybody is a Big or a Little or whatever.

(Anonymous) 2025-08-13 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
High School AUs - I'm too old for this shit, and only rarely do the stakes and relationships transfer to teenagers

Modern Day AUs - They've better odds than HSAUs, but the stakes and relationships rarely transfer over to normal people

Any "Genre" AU where I know too much about the actual time period - Pirates, Knights + Princes, but ironically not Coyboys/Wild West or Ancient Rome. On the off chance somebody makes an X-Men fic set in Ancient Rome they do their goshdarned homework for it.

(Anonymous) 2025-08-13 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
I'm with you on vampire AUs but man, I do like a well done Hanahaki AU. They don't work for all characters and fandoms though, I'll admit that.

(Anonymous) 2025-08-13 10:19 am (UTC)(link)
High school AUs. I'm 39 years old, I don't need yet another high school AU

(Anonymous) 2025-08-13 03:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I was going to say there is no AU I hate, I will give all of them a try, but with your last sentence you got the one I cannot stand to the point that I cannot see the name without physically feeling like I cannot breathe. So, yeah, that for me as well. Funny enough, I do generally like any other kind of AU mentioned here, like college/university or high school or coffee shop. I will stop reading when they are boring, but often there is a twist or the characters are just so interesting (I don't care about some amount of ooc as long as it's not too much - which is very subjective, I'm aware of that) that it keeps me hooked. Some of my absolute favorite fics are college AUs or coffee shop AUs.

Though I have to say, for writing, I never really know what to do with the prompt 'coffee shop' (I only write for prompt list challenges like kinktober). It came up several times and once I had agents use a coffee shop to take down the bad guy and another time I asked friends on discord what would be the most outrageous coffee shop idea and got 'a black hole opens up in one of the women's bathroom stalls' and honestly, that's still one of the most hilarious fics I've written.
