How do you watch Cadfael if ya all are atheists and agnostics?

(Anonymous) 2025-10-09 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Based on religion threads in the past there's no religious people on fs but there's Father Brown and Cadfael fans, apparently?

For the story and the landscapes. Also for first!Beringar.

Atheist Cadfael and Father Brown fan right here. (A fan of Grantchester too, at least while Sidney was still the main character.)

And the answer is "very easily".

First, I can happily enjoy characters whose sense of morality I don't agree with at all, including utterly ruthless bastards and immoral criminals. I don't have to share their beliefs to enjoy watching or reading about them.

Second, I can have respect and appreciation for people who act in ways I consider to be admirable, even if they arrived at those actions for different reasons.

You're actually raising a lot more questions for me about how you experience stories.

Is it very important to you that the characters you watch/read share your religious or non-religious beliefs?

Yeah, it seems like a failure of imagination to me!

I can never root for characters that are ruthless bastards. I dropped a Chinese 3D cultivation series just yesterday. The MC groveled before the strong and didn't help the weak while recieving help from others. Religion doesn't come up in media all that often so it's hard to say. I would be against watching a series about a Muslim priest I think.

Because it's a show? Do you only watch shows that reflect your own identity and beliefs?

Isn't representation we're fighting for aimed at that? More POC, strong female characters, people with nconventional looks and disabilities on screen? So people can identify with the characters.

nayrt - No. By all means, representation is great. But most reasonable don't take it so far as to say, "I want diversity and representation because I don't intend to watch anything that doesn't exactly reflect myself."

That's such a ridiculous thing to say that this is starting to smell of troll.

I also don't believe in the monarchy and the rigid class system, but I love period dramas. It's not that hard. I'm an atheist who loves The Vicar of Dibley. Like, I can watch shows about people who are not 100% like me.

Religion is a shitty original where the fans take it WAY too seriously, but there are some spin-off shows that are alright.

It's a worldview that's very pervasive and important to the characters, exactly the same as if I'm watching something set in Tang Dynasty China or the Regency Period England or SF world.

That feels more like a religious issue.

As a non-religious person, I don't have any external moral authority in my life who tells me I can't watch a show just because the characters believe different things than I do.

Because the story telling is excellent, even if there’s a religious overtone? Also, the history in the Cadfael stories is detailed and incorporated into the stories very well.

I'm pagan and enjoy the aesthetics of shows like Vicar of Dibly and Father Brown. The rolling countryside and old town charms, etc.

Well, the same way I watch shows/channels with a lot of alcohol consumption as a non-drinker. What I choose to do in my life is not necessarily what other people choose to do. Just because I choose not to do something, that doesn't mean I begrudge others their choice to do it. And if they enjoy it, find comfort in it, and aren't actively causing themselves or others serious harm, it can be entertaining for me to watch.

I enjoy watching other people do a lot of things I'm not able to or don't want to do. I love car chases, but I would not like to be in one. I would hate to be anywhere near a real gunfight, but, man, I do love me some awesomely choreographed screen shootouts.

I mean, I do also enjoy watching other people things that I do. It can enhance the viewing experience. But they can also do it really wrong (though that can sometimes be enjoyable in a different kind of way).

Like everything, liked or disliked, it depends on how it's depicted. There are some things I have a visceral reaction to, so I tend to avoid those.

This question doesn't make sense. I watched House of the Dragon despite not being a gigantic flying lizard or into incest. Do you only consume media that resembles your life and beliefs precisely?

Non religious people can enjoy shows with religious themes and characters in same way religious people watch shows with atheists or nonreligious people in them.

If you're religious and refuse to or somehow can't watch any shows where characters aren't confirmed to be religious, that's definitely a quirk of yours and not common or default to the majority of people...

The same way I read CS Lewis and JRR Tolkien-- with interest if not always agreement.

Fun fact. I also can watch and enjoy shows about religious Muslim or Buddhist or whatever people.

I turn on the telly and tune in and there it is, pretty easily actually.

I just think it's a good and entertaining show and Derek Jacobi is an excellent actor.

I watch with both eyes open and occasional blinking.
