Léa Seydoux is beautiful and all, but by the time she appears in the franchise the plots are so forgettable and she doesn't really help distinguish them or her character at all. I honestly don't recall a single scene between her and Daniel Craig that had much in the way of chemistry. As a result, I never bought the love story -- because you know damn well a woman would have to be exceptional to get James fuckin' Bond to quit horndoggin' his way around the world. I just can't see it.

Eva Green's Vesper Lynd, on the other hand. Yeah, I can see why a person would spend an entire lifetime trying to get over her. She's more than just a pretty face.

I agree completely. I didn’t care much about her character and I didn’t see any chemistry between them. The age gap seemed more glaring too, but maybe as part of a greater issue that they didn’t seem on the same level as much as he did with Vesper.

And I have a thing for Eva Green in most roles, but I still think her chemistry with Craig in Casino Royale was especially strong.

Can't disagree with this, but I am still going to be contrary for a moment.

I rewatched Casino Royale recently, for the first time in aaaages, and I was slightly disappointed to find that I wasn't as impressed with Vesper's character as I was back when the movie came out. IIRC that was a particularly dark time for female characters in popular media, and I remember thinking she was such a great character back then, but upon rewatch I was a bit more ambivalent. I do think Eva Green played her spectacularly well, though, and I definitely credit Eva with giving the character the special sauce that made her so compelling on screen, even despite the writing sensibilities not quite landing for me the way they used to.

Regardless, though, I agree that I can actually buy Bond getting his heart shredded by Vesper in a lasting way, whereas with Madeleine I was never remotely convinced, and their whole romance kind of cheapened Bond for me a bit. Like yeah, Craig!Bond is an insensitive brute who uses women as tools and has no compunction about also enjoying their bodies when opportunity affords, but for the most part I accepted that as part of the character. Pairing him up with Madeleine just had me like, great, now he's one of those mid-life-crisis men desperately trying to convince themselves they've found higher meaning and self-actualization between the thighs of a gorgeous woman half their age.

My late parents used to play the Gordon Lightfoot song when I was a kid, so there's a lot of nostalgia at work here too, but the song and story of the Edmund Fitzgerald always moved me, even when I was little. It still does. I cannot listen to the song or read the account of its sinking without getting all teary-eyed.

It's not an exaggeration to say that I think about this every November. I have no personal connection to the ship, but I'm glad people haven't forgotten.

"We are holding our own." - That still gets me right in the feels.
