I think she's popular because of how quickly and significantly her art has developed, how funny her strips can be, and if the secret poster says they're sick of hearing about it from the artist and her "mindless mob of fans", she should stop following the artists journal, since that seems to be the only place she posts all her stuff to. And for the record, her fans aren't "mindless", they're not a bunch of 13 yaoi!11! fangirls, and if you watch her uStream channel you'll find that they spend more time gushing about details she draws in say, the background of scenes, than on the actual "gay" itself.

Basically, have a big CryMoar lollipop on me.

Haha, this is probably counter-productive to what the OP wanted, but now I want to know more about this whatever-it-is. Links and info? A title for me to google perhaps?

She's approachable, and the fanbase is as it is (and growing) because they feel privy to the development process and are able to interact and feel connected to the story even if it's not out yet. This isn't new. She's not the first to have an accessible fanbase during the development stages and she won't be the last. See: every band trying to make it big ever.

The "mindless" fanbase isn't even that big, it's not mentioned everywhere you turn. Why the hell do you bother to follow her if you can't stand her talking about it?

tl;dr: lolllll oh cry me a river.

(Anonymous) 2009-11-17 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
I can't say I'm excited for TJ and Amal, or that I'll buy it when it comes out, or even that I'm friends with the artist but having seen the concept become what it is now and all the work, love and thought put into it by the author, I guess I can confidently say fuck you.

People with talent get fanbases. Promising stories written by talented people who work hard and leave their fucking mom's basements get fanbases. Sorry your failed yaoi webcomic couldn't stand up to something with actual depth. Keep eyeballing Weiss Kreuz and maybe someone will love your fat ass. (Spoiler: Nope, but Cheetos will never betray you amirite?)

Also she made shirts becuase there was demand for them. Get money get paid.

Having read the little first-couple-chapters gonna-be-redrawn preview-pilot-thing the author gave out at a local con:

That fanbase is well-earned, my friend.

Besides, haven't you ever gotten psyched over a movie before it premiered?

[identity profile] honestys-easy.livejournal.com 2009-11-17 12:46 am (UTC)(link)

And now I ship it.

[identity profile] rktikfox.livejournal.com 2009-11-17 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
I would just like to say, the shirts are pretty fucking awesome, and I would probably buy one even if the comic never came out.

I guess the hyping gets the word out? It's just really another way of marketing it (or that's how I see it). And, as for whether it's good or not, I got one of the preview comics from a while back and I thought that was pretty good :/ In past journal entires she's detailed the story and written little bits of it out, and they're all good. Why aren't we allowed to support the things we like?

[identity profile] cloverflynn.livejournal.com 2009-11-17 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
I agree that most of the hype comes from being able to watch her art and storytelling progress as she works on it. As an artist, I find it extremely inspirational, and I can't help but wonder if OP is an artist whose work is not getting any love. Sounds like butthurt to me.

I personally am impressed with the amount of love I have for the characters, and how much I feel that I already know them, from how little she's actually shown us so far. To me, that is what screams talent, and that's how I know the end product is going to be good.

I proudly bought the shirt, because I want to keep her enthusiasm going, and I want to support a fellow artist who is busting her ass to finish this WHILE working full time and not getting any monetary gain from the work she's producing on her own time. I know by experience that having a drive to use up all your free time on creative work is exhausting and not completely awarding.

Agree with you about the t shirts, it does seem arrogant, but I guess people buy them anyway. "Most overhyped thing ever" though? nah. Overhyped maybe but it's still just an internet thing, and if it is overhyped, just look forward to all the wank about how disappointed people are when it finally comes out.

[identity profile] oaktree89.livejournal.com 2009-11-17 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
Ok, Anon, I know it's been said before, but cry me (and all of us) a BIG FAT FUCKING RIVER. seriously, you don't hear about this anywhere except on EK's journal(s), so if you don't want to hear about it, don't read her stuff.

And seriously, what's wrong with marketing yourself?

Troll.

[identity profile] atelierlune.livejournal.com 2009-11-17 02:34 am (UTC)(link)

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2009-11-17 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
I feel bad admitting this since I've been following EK for a long time (my husband knew her from back in the Psychommu Gaijin days) but I totally fucking agree. Nothing against her because it looks decent, the art is amazing (I love EK's style) it's just the fact that there's a fandom already is pretty ridiculous. I post stuff from the comic I've been working on (for almost a decade, but that's beside the point), but I wouldn't expect anyone to actually fangirl over it the way people squee all over this comic. I can't blame her for trying to cash in on its popularity, though. Times are tough for everybody, so it's good to make money any way you can. I can't hate anyone who spent at least a year waiting tables (when they were qualified for a better job) but still kept stabbing away at a dream. That's inspirational to me. Although I have to admit that the little mini-comics she did about waiting tables were much more compelling than anything she's done for this comic

So yeah, mixed feelings

ETA: I just popped over to her lj for the first time in like a year and it does seem that's she been productive, but I would rather just wait for the finished product to come out first. I guess some people like watching the process, but I think that not only is that kind of too much navel-gazing, it actually seems counterproductive to get that much feedback from a potential audience while you're working on something.

Aw, come on, let her have this one thing. It's like the novel Cleolinda's been talking about for years: they're never really gonna finish these projects because the validation they get from fapping on LJ about ~the process~ is satisfying enough. It's very easy to succumb to the temptation to keep tinkering away at the beta stages of a project forever when you have a built-in audience to insulate you from criticism and praise whatever baby steps you take toward completion. Kind of tragic, maybe, but it's not hurting anyone else and it's better than self-booze-medicating or whatever people like this used to do before the internet.

[identity profile] threepwillow.livejournal.com 2009-11-17 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
I just...really don't understand why you felt the need to say this. I guess I can ALMOST understand why you'd feel that way about the project itself, but as everyone before me has said, she only talks about it in her own space, and you'd have to make a conscious effort to be witness to it. It just seems like you're going out of your way to bag on her/the project when it'd take about 20x less effort to just ignore it and go on your merry way. I'm sorry for you that it's got you this fucking angry, because that's just...a lot of wasted energy that could have gone into something productive, or something. But I guess that's why this is a secret?

I love the interactions I've had with her and I love my T-shirt. I don't see why that matters to you at all. :/

[identity profile] halcyonjazz.livejournal.com 2009-11-17 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
Aside from the occasional DA submission, pretty much the entire canon and fandom is centralized on her journal, so you'll need to repeatedly go out of your way to see people fanning over it. She created the t-shirts because there was a demand, like any slightly savvy business-minded person would. ...How is either of these two things arrogance?

Who pissed in your cheerios this morning?
