It's like I have anti-shipping goggled welded on. I simply don't see romance unless it's very explicit or done just right. I default to assuming non-romantic explanations for a lot of character moments. I still sometimes get surprised when the main characters kiss because I thought they were gazing off thoughtfully, not looking at the other one longingly.

It seems you have issues with romance. Seek therapy.

It seems like you have issues pathologizing other people's reactions to fiction. Seek therapy.

A lot of times the writing, acting, direction, or all three, just don't sell it. I've come to expect the "romance" whenever a man and a woman stand next to each other, but rarely do I actually see it in the text, as it were. Mostly when it comes to shipping I grab onto characters that I think have the best chemistry on screen, which is rarely the ones the story actually puts together.

Same. I went from being a hardcore shipper for over a decade to just... not. I understand where people are coming from when they see backing for A/B (etc.), but I almost never feel it or see it as a tell, unless it's explicit or framed as a pre-relationship moment.

That’s fair OP.

I’m the opposite, I’m so used to the visual tropes and narrative tells that I can usually tell who’s going to be put together in the first episode. Obviously some things are more obvious, like if I’m watching a romance show, but even for non ones I usually guess right. There’s a formula and most things stick to it.

Yeah, same, especially when most shows aren't trying to be particularly subtle about it.

Like...I usually see the tropes from a mile away but the romance actually happening always throws me off because there's rarely any actual substance behind it, just the tropes.
And then sometimes I forget the tropes exist and I miss them entirely and then I'm blindsided by it.
