4chan is a cesspit, but there's very rarely some okay discussion on *some* boards. Emphasis on some. The boards that aren't politics or "culture war" adjacent (gaming, anime) are usually better.

Re: What do you think about shadow bans and hidden censorship?

I think it's a good way to deal with trolls. Don't give a reaction, just erase their bullshit.

I have to admit I kinda enjoy it when people stride in expecting to make people mad, get deleted, and get mad themselves.

+1

Also: [community profile] smallweb for DW users, and https://sadgrl.online/resources/ for beginner stuff.

Melonland and 32bitcafe are active forums too. I'm only on the former, but there's an overlap in userbases.

I have yet to see Case make a bad call. They usually only step in when the trolls are busy. If you don't like it you are welcome to leave.

I've never had my comments hidden on reddit or deleted here. And I stopped using google a few years ago because it is paid trash results at this point.

Same. It is an amusing little hissyfit.

I used to have an HD with screenshots of interesting forum conversations I had or stumbled upon, it's damaged and long gone. My experience on 2000s forums were a nightmare but it's bittersweet how everything is memoryholed now.

A variant I hear a lot is "In-denial lesbians are attracted to elves because they're basically women who are safe to be attracted to because they're men but only on a technicality!"

Ayrt - exactly my experience. I read so much in March and April and then suddenly my books dried up and it was months before I found another interesting read.

Why is Case deleting comments of shitstirring lumped under this, lol. F!S isn't a public resource like Google.

Shadowbans on namespace are a nuisance, though. On Tumblr/Twitter/Reddit it's usually done by bots flagging you instead of what you've actually done. I was shadowbanned on Tumblr twice for queueing too many posts, they told me in my email appeal that it made the bots flag me as a spammer.

There's duckduckgo and ecosia for Google alternatives.

I agree, I've never seen Case remove comments that I thought should have stayed. And the matter-of-fact removal is also A+ modding imo.

I came down here torn on whether to say 'REAL men crush on dwarves' or to say Sam has always been my number one...

(Anonymous) 2025-12-30 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
Nope, I use AO3 the same way. I’m looking for fandoms I like, not just random fandoms that use certain tags. There are a handful of authors I follow, but if they switch fandoms, I don’t feel obligated to read those fics.

This secret makes me wonder HOW the OP uses AO3, and why they do it that way.

I'm going to TRY to use the stash first, but I can't make that kind of a promise.

Same on both counts. I don't rule out "Asian media" because I like some JRPGs and read RPF for laughs/morbid curiosity. But unless I forget to filter out crossovers, I don't have this problem of being drowned in anime or k-pop.

I also didn't think Bollywood was ubiquitous enough to be mentioned, ever.

(Anonymous) 2025-12-30 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
Is there a better picture of it? It looks like shiny crepe paper in this one.

(Anonymous) 2025-12-30 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
Same!

Re: What do you think about shadow bans and hidden censorship?

(Anonymous) 2025-12-30 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, does it bother you that a mod actually moderates their own comm?

I love how you pretend it's the same as AI slop, shitty algorithms, and everything Google has done to betray its early self. If their search engine bothers you, then switch to a different one. I'm sure even Google will show you a few results after their AI trash.

(Anonymous) 2025-12-30 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
You're right and you should say it, OP.

Re: Things you don't need/won't buy next year

(Anonymous) 2025-12-30 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
Jimmy Beans, The Woolly Thistle, MDK, Purl Soho, WEBS, Knit Picks, just to name a few. There are a lot of terrific places to buy yarn online.

(Anonymous) 2025-12-30 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I was so excited that it was at least trying to go somewhere new--especially with that kid with the broom at the end!

Re: Things you don't need/won't buy next year

(Anonymous) 2025-12-30 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
I hear you. My stash is STABLE (stash acquired beyond life expectancy), but then someone comes out with something new…

Re: What do you think about shadow bans and hidden censorship?

(Anonymous) 2025-12-30 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
What I learned from the freeform of 2000s web was that algorithms weren't worth shit anyway, and that I was responsible for my own enjoyment. Sometimes shit gets deleted, and that's unfortunate, but it's always been that way and always will, because it's the internet. Learn to find what you want without relying on the system to provide it for you, as our forebears have always done.

Re: What do you think about shadow bans and hidden censorship?

(Anonymous) 2025-12-30 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think Case deleting comments at their discretion on the anon community they mod is the same thing as those other examples at all.

Re: How do use ao3?

(Anonymous) 2025-12-30 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
I’m searching first for fandoms I like, then ships within those fandoms, and then specific tags. I know what I like and who, and that’s what I want to read.
