National Shutdown Day to protest ICE tomorrow (USA)

(Anonymous) 2026-01-29 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you participating?

For those not aware:
Organizers are urging Americans to participate by:

Not going to work
Not attending school
Avoiding shopping and spending money to create an "economic blackout"

The protest follows the fatal shootings of two U.S. citizens—Renee Good and Alex Pretti—by federal agents in Minneapolis. The action is a response to what activists describe as a "reign of terror" by ICE, including warrantless home raids, family separations, and deadly force.

The movement seeks to pressure Congress to:

Cut funding for ICE and DHS
End federal cooperation with local law enforcement
Pass legislation to dismantle ICE
Organizers emphasize this is a nonviolent, decentralized action rooted in civil disobedience and economic resistance to federal overreach.

I always feel bad because I generally can't participate in these. I work for someone who is the only pediatric specialist in our city and if I call out legit kids won't get the care they need. But it always feel like a cop out to say. I do participate in the 'economic blackout' part of the protest, I just can't do the no work part.

Your job is important, and if any of your patients are immigrants and/or if you are welcoming to immigrant patients and don't report them to ICE, you are fighting ICE that way. There are many ways to resist and to help, and protests are only one of them.

Not participating because I fight ICE every day. I and the other immigration attorneys agree that protesting instead of doing our job tomorrow would help ICE. Plus I have a hearing in the morning and have to prepare for my monday hearing in the afternoon.

But I don't intend on buying anything tomorrow, certainly not from any companies that help ICE like Amazon.

And Saturday I'm volunteering at a training for a nonprofit here in Dallas that sits outside ICE office to offer food and advice to people having to report.

I don’t see how any of that would hurt anyone but the people taking part in the protest. Friday is a huge shopping day but will be even more so tomorrow because of the weather; lots of folks need to resupply from the last big winter storm before the one coming on Saturday. Not going to work if you aren’t snowbound/icebound just means risking your income. It’s a similar situation with not going to school; either you’re a kid enrolled in a public or private school and therefore your guardians are legally required to account for your absence, or you’re a college student risking good standing with your school and possibly with your financiers. Nothing about this protest is designed to hurt ICE or the government, only the protesters.

These kind of arguments are part of the problem. The weather isn't new, you could have stocked up before. Kids in my area have been having walkouts, both high schools and colleges, and they are fine. Nobody is getting expelled or anything. One day not going to school is not going to fuck with your standing or your finances. It's a rare job that would fire you for calling out one day.

Americans always have reasons why things "will never work" or why it's impossible to participate and how "this won't do anything" for every offered tactic.

Re: National Shutdown Day to protest ICE tomorrow (USA)

(Anonymous) 2026-01-30 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
not the person above but 'You could have stocked up before' - yeah, maybe if more people know about it beforehand. I think more people are finding out the day before this protest so to say that you should have stocked up in case some random protest might happen is a really useless comment.

Re: National Shutdown Day to protest ICE tomorrow (USA)

(Anonymous) 2026-01-30 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
“Stocked up before…” Just totally ignoring that millions of Americans have had limited access to groceries for over a week now.

“Kids in my area have been having walkouts, both high schools and colleges, and they are fine. Nobody is getting expelled or anything.” I can’t see anything in the comment you replied to about getting expelled. That isn’t the only consequence that can hurt someone.

“It's a rare job that would fire you for calling out one day.” You sound like you’ve never heard of a career or right to work states. You sound like someone who has never had a work contract and is unaware that taking time off from work for a political protest can get someone fired and blacklisted.

This protest is designed only to hurt those taking part. It literally can’t hurt anyone else. That’s not an excuse not to protest, it’s simply pointing out that the people behind this are ineffective. Targeted boycotts and planned demonstrations can and have had an impact. Mass walkouts can and have had an impact but it is highly specific to a location and group. If the organizers had planned this further out, mass walkouts might have been an option. A total blackout on spending is just stupid. People need things they have to buy. A surprising amount of that comes from small businesses, the only other group that would suffer aside from participants. Combining walkouts with a total blackout on spending is a great way to do absolutely nothing but fuck over the small number of idiots who are privileged and stupid enough to partake.

da

Not only that, but while participating in boycotts/protests/etc that are short term, you are supposed to be building community and seeing what you can do to take care of one another when the longer shutdown/strikes occur.

You do know that plenty of people don't live in the path of this snowstorm?

If you can't participate, then don't participate. No need to discourage anyone else who is capable from doing so.

does it count if you've been economically shutting down every day because you have no money to spend?

I'm all for a genuine national strike but sadly, I don't know that this is going to make any sort of impact at all. not because people like me who are poor and can't lose their job can't participate, but because those with the privilege to be able to participate won't outweigh those of us who can't. you can't make an impact that way, no one will even notice.

I think economic blackouts have real consequences and impact, though it's not always immediately seen.

Didn't know about it and have already spent money for plans tomorrow. When was this protest planned?

Yeah, these aren't great if there isn't advance planning and warning so people know. I hadn't heard about it until I read these comments

I unfortunately work in the health field but I will cheer everyone on. I won't spend money due to the impending snowstorm (already got my supplies and refuse to be out there while folks are scrambling to get bread and milk), and I've been participating in multiple boycotts since the end of 2024.

I never participate in these if I am scheduled to work, because I really can't miss hours at work and still pay my bills, plus, I'm afraid of losing my job. I know those are excuses. I can at least not shop/spend money, but I really can't miss work.

Those aren’t excuses. Anyone who tells you that providing for yourself is wrong can go fuck off. Then they can fuck off a little further. Most of us can only dream of being as privileged as those who would say you’re making excuses.

I have the day off work/school, and I'm dirt poor with enough pantry supplies to eat, so I'm in.

I'm already not going to work because the building where I work is closed for emergency repairs. Luckily I had leave saved up.

But I read a lot of political news and haven't heard of the planned blackout/boycott until now. I guess I can not shop tomorrow, but if I'm actually gonna do something I may as well call and give my congresscritters an earful. The only actual general strike I'm aware of other than the amazing short notice Minnesota shutdown that just happened is planned for 2028, a lot of big unions are laying groundwork for it already. And it wouldn't hurt to join a union, even just the IWW, if you plan to participate.

Until two hours ago there were less than 50 posts about this protest on all of Reddit. And the overwhelming majority of comments on each post were pointing out how impossible it would be for almost anyone to join.

Classic culture usa. Whine, complain, and bitch, about how you ruined your country, and then any and all sacrifice you have to make to stand against it is too hard, inconvenient, or sudden for you.

If your job helps people in need, or you will literally starve for more than a day or two without a missed shift, then obviously don't harm others of kill yourself for this. But a lot of comments here really look like it's too much work, and they'd rather just watch other people step up instead.

Maybe your rich ass can afford to drop everything for a last minute planned protest, but the rest of us live in reality.

What you’re overlooking in the comments is that nationwide there won’t be enough participation to have any effect. Most of the country can’t just skip work or not spend money on necessities. It’s a poorly planned and poorly advertised protest that depends on record numbers it cannot get. It’s too much, too late. Plenty of people who have been joining protests for the last few weeks will be at work in the morning and at protests over the weekend. It isn’t about wanting others to step up; it’s that this is a laughably pointless idea dreamed up by some incredibly privileged and ignorant people.
