There are too many ugly people on TV.

(Anonymous) 2026-02-08 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
When did you last go to the optometrist?

(Anonymous) 2026-02-08 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Worried your pretty-privilege is not paying off? Don't worry, I'm sure you never had much of it to start with.

And if they did... give it 10 years.

Didn't work in the secret thread so you had to repost here?

(Anonymous) 2026-02-08 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Love this secret. Content, art direction, all good. Five stars.

(Anonymous) 2026-02-08 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
What do you mean by this exactly. Like, "ugly" is a REALLY broad term and no one can read your mind to determine what you consider ugly or why

(Anonymous) 2026-02-08 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Given the thousands of actors that are on TV now, I think what you probably mean is something like, for the specific shows that you want to watch, you want actors that you are personally attracted to.

I can't say I watch a ton of TV right now, but of all the shows currently airing I know about, I can't think of one that doesn't have at least one aesthetically pleasing (in my opinion) main cast member.

I have noticed that for quite a few popular shows, the main casts are skewing older than they used to. And there does seem to be a wider range of the appearances of the people being cast as leads. I, myself, think that's a good thing.

Now, if you want to talk about some of the unflattering lighting, hair, makeup, and wardrobe styling choices I've noticed more of lately, I am with you.

I feel so completely the opposite. More ugly people and more “plain” people please!

(This is part of why I watch much more from the UK than from the US. And part of why I struggled hard to get into those East Asian dramas everyone around me loved. Too many same-y pretty people with too much airbrushing.)

UK tv is great for not-pretty people. Plus, a lot of them can act.

(Anonymous) 2026-02-08 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Same! They're all so pretty, thin, symmetrical with great skin.

UK tv

(Anonymous) 2026-02-08 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
UK tv is so refreshing! I didn't realize how plastic everyone looks on US tv until I started watching more panel comedy shows and then other UK shows. They look like actual people there with a whole variety of characteristics!

I'm wondering what other countries I should be looking at for good fun programs that also feature real looking people.

Saaame
I can't deal with East Asian dramas at all. They look ridiculous.
Give me people looking like people.

You haven't noticed the correlation between Harvey Weinstein going to prison and the woman in media getting uglier?

Man I wish it wasn't true, but...

I agree. Some of it could be down to styling but in the submission thread someone mentioned that all faces are symmetrical and that really annoys me. I have rarely seen asymmetric faces in the real world but I see them all the time on TV. A great example is School Spirits where the MC’s face looks like she had a bad accident as an infant and taken to a back alley butcher to fix it. And she’s only one of several cast members with an asymmetrical face. With her it’s so pronounced that it can throw me right out of the scene sometimes. I’m not alone in that; a quick google proves a lot of the audience have had the same experience. People don’t want to watch ugly.

There are NOT ENOUGH ugly people on TV and I will die on this hill.

Stop normalizing flawless hair and makeup! Stop normalizing plastic surgery! Stop normalizing veneers! Let people be people!

Fun fact: the actor behind the facial prosthetics in that picture is the Doctor (Robert Picardo) from Star Trek.

(Anonymous) 2026-02-09 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
I find modern TV almost unwatchable because everyone is supposedly conventionally attractive in such a manufactured way (plastic surgery, make up, hair extensions, dehydrated physiques etc) that they end up being unpleasant to look at in a sort of uncanny valley way. So in a sense I agree that they're ugly but doubt we mean it in the same way.

(Anonymous) 2026-02-09 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
We have very different experiences with media.

(Anonymous) 2026-02-09 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed, so badly.

(Anonymous) 2026-02-09 06:55 am (UTC)(link)
If anything, our screens are filled with too many overly pretty faces because everyone is getting cosmetic procedures done.
