What beverages do you usually drink most days?

(Anonymous) 2026-02-08 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Having a bit of a disagreement with my significant other. I primarily drink water, filtered iced tap water. I often have one soda or glass of juice a day. I also sometimes make coffee or tea.

My partner, on the other hand, rarely drinks water, and when he does, it has to be bottled water. He mostly drinks soda, energy drinks, juice, sports drinks (Gatorade, Powerade), or delivered drinks from a soda fountain. Sometimes he buys those tubs of powder you mix into water.

And it gets really expensive. Energy drinks in particular are expensive, and he will drink a minimum of 2 every single day, sometimes up to 5. Soda is also expensive.

Not to mention the sugar. He only gets sugarfree if it it's a flavor that doesn't come in the full sugar version.

It's also frustrating when I buy a carton of soda for myself, and he drinks them all in just a few days. Nothing enrages me more than when I go to get a can of soda and the box is sitting there empty. I should not have to hide drinks (and food, snacks are the same way) from my partner so that he won't drink it all himself.

I don't want to shame him or hurt his feelings, but the resentment is starting to grow.

So I just wonder, what DO most people drink? My parents drink iced tea and water with occasional soda or juice, similar to me.

I only drink water on weekdays. On weekends I'll have two sugar free sodas in mixed drinks.

A couple of cups of coffee in the morning, a glass of wine with dinner, a cup of tea before bed and then water the rest of the day. A soda maybe once or twice a month if I'm craving one.

You shouldn't be drinking your calories, as a general health rule. Water/coffee/tea is the way to go.

Sugar free gatorade, usually the blue kind. Diet coke. Tap water, not iced. And at least one sugar free energy drink or mug of coffee.

Also, I'd argue that the problem is less what your partner drinks and more his selfishness in drinking stuff you buy for you.

In order of volume... barley tea, water, coffee. Sometimes kombucha.

I drink a lot of soda, one or two a day with real sugar, and maybe a soda-like that has stevia. I also drink water but only filtered and so cold it's practically ice. I hate the texture of water, and it tastes like it's temperature so if the water pitcher isn't kept in the fridge I just won't drink water that day. Basically I like carbonation (but sparkling water is too sharp, it needs a syrup).

I see this less as a habit problem and more of a stealing problem. Like, yes, you guys share a life but if you buy something for yourself he needs to keep his hands off unless you give permission. My wife and I are like that with our ice cream. Hers is hers and mine is mine. She asks permission if she's eaten all of hers and wants some of mine and vice versa.

Tap water all day every day

I very rarely have anything else.

I have a friend that rarely drinks water and mostly just lives on sida and seltzers. Seems expensive.

I mostly just drink iced tea at home, I buy boxes of tea bags and mix and match flavors in a pitcher that I keep in the fridge. Maybe your partner should buy one of those devices that carbonates water to he can make his own fizzy drinks for cheaper

Right now? Mostly lemsip. Ugh.

Mostly water, though I have some days where I forget and go straight from coffee to diet soda. You're right that too much gets expensive. Even I only buy juice and seltzer water once in a while.

You may want to invest in a locked mini-fridge. Or go out whenever you crave a soda. Or... well, I guess I won't suggest nuclear options if other options haven't been explored.

A glass of juice in the morning (love my OJ), and then water (filtered tap water with ice) for the rest of the day/on my overnight shifts.
I have a soda if I'm having specific foods (pizza usually), and might have another small glass of juice if I have indulged myself and bought some Pom-Cherry.

You need to have a serious discussion with your SO about boundaries, and you need to SET those boundaries and stick to them. Taking the stuff you have set aside for yourself when it's obvious they have their own stuff is ridiculous. And you should FOR SURE not be paying for all their expensive drinks.

I do drink a lot of soda (3, sometimes 4 a day), but it's nearly always diet or zero sugar. As to expense, prices are ridiculous, so I usually get the name brands when they are on special - buy 2 12pks @ $11.99, get 2 free, which works out to about $6 per 12pk, which doesn't seem outrageous. But you do have to find some place to store the packs as you work your way through them. Otherwise, I get generic store brands which are $4-$5 for a 12pk (they don't taste the same as name brands, but through trial and error, I've found some that work for me).

I also drink one coffee a day (usually make it myself), and then some water that has been flavored (I often get the drink mix powders at a dollar store). I don't usually drink plain water, and tea isn't something I drink at all.

Coffee, milk, the occasional fruit juice (I'm very selective on sugar content and no dyes, and water it down anyway), tea, cocoa, iced tea depending on season. My partner drinks way more straight water than I do but also has a bad soda coping mechanism.

But, nonny, dear, you're describing the exact bad habits everyone knows is bad. That much energy drink and soda consumption has been shamed far and wide as bad for your health and even gamers with the shittiest diets admit it's bad. Sugar is an addiction, and if he can't/won't admit it and either commit to changes or get a doctor's help to change his diet, the resentment is going to lead to breakup, possibly sooner than later. Once it starts building, there's only two ends to resentment and only one of them is in your control.

I mainly drink sparkling water (either bottled or tap dumped into a home sparkling water maker) and black tea. I like to occasionally try new soda flavours but I don't buy them a lot because of the sugar (I hate the taste of artificial sweeteners, so no sugar free for me).
In winter, I also drink a lot of hot water and in summer, I like to drink a 1:1 ratio mix of coke and sparkling lime flavoured water. I also make my own ice tea a lot in summer, especially when I have cold leftover black tea.

A lot of coffee and a bit of a Monster Juiced addiction. I'll have can of their Monarch flavour each day.

Tap water and iced black tea. Occasionally I will buy orange juice, or eggnog, or something else special as a treat. I buy soda once in awhile when I'm craving it, but only a single bottle or a cup from a restaurant, because if I have it in the house, I will drink too much.

It's the cost but mainly health for me. I struggle with my weight and have no self-control around soda in particular. I can't have easy access to high calorie drinks.

I used to drink bottled water but I got a water pitcher with a filter, to save money but also because the guilt I had at the hundreds of plastic bottles I was throwing into landfills or sending off to maybe hopefully be recycled was pretty bad.

I will say, you need to talk to him about this, because the resentment isn't going to go away. If he's drinking and eating stuff that is specifically yours (I assume this is on top of the stuff he gets for himself?) that is really disrespectful and needs to stop.

I drink soda and water. I actually drink a lot of soda, and I want to cut back. For a few years I was drinking a lot more water, but I've gotten back into drinking soda more than water.

In my household, there are about 3-4 of us who drink soda, energy drinks, and Gatorade (my mom buys fruit juice), and it's shared between us all. We all sort of have been able to keep things well stocked.
With me, I take the initiative to replace if I take anything. So if I grab even just one can of soda, I take note to get a 13/24pk of soda the next time I grocery shop. Or I take note if we're low on soda when I grab one.

Ignore if you're not looking for advice...have you discussed with him that drinks are categorized under "each to their own, ask if you want some - don't expect me to always say yes"? At least that would be my boundaries with things I'm sensitive about.
Be clear about your boundaries and expectations. If he ignores and keeps taking your drinks, it'll probably have to be one of those things where you only get the single serve sodas when you want a drink. That way it doesn't open up opportunity for your husband to steal from you.

I drink mostly water and tea. I've got a family history of diabetes and don't mess around with drinking pop or other sugary beverages on a regular basis. Artificial sweeteners taste funny or like chemicals to me. It never fails to boggle my mind how many people just can't seem to drink plain water, they need to add all sorts of crap to it or whatever. It's expensive and terrible for your health.

Your partner's habits aren't healthy and he would benefit from cutting waaaaaay back on his sugary beverage intake. His health AND your budget would benefit. But that's a separate issue from him drinking all YOUR pop. His diet is dumb and unhealthy, but consuming all of your drinks/snacks and leaving none for you is selfish and inconsiderate. That's what breeds the most resentment in a relationship, especially when you have to gentle-parent an allegedly adult man and explain the concept of "sharing" and "not being a greedy pig". If he's selfish in this area, I bet he's selfish in other ways that make him a less than ideal partner. Food for thought.

Uh, this might be just me, if I buy something specifically for myself with my money, I expect everyone else to keep their grabby paws off it unless I said it was okay to have some. If I had a roommate or partner who routinely ate my snacks without asking OR replacing it immediately, there would be a big problem.

That said, I don't drink soda regularly, it's a once in a while thing for me. I drink water mostly. Tea, herbal tea, and iced tea in the summer.

I mostly drink water all day, I have a cup of camomile tea at night and twice a week I get myself a soda as a treat. I used to drink way too many sodas so I made the change to massively cut back about 8 years ago now and It's very much been for the better. I'm at a point now where I can have soda in the house and not immediately need to drink it, lol.

I also like juice sometimes as well so I have a bottle of no-added-sugar unbranded cordial I add to water when I feel like it.

And to your point OP: that's not a small thing to be mad about because that frankly shows a really quite severe lack of care to your feelings in general. Me and my gf have different snacks but sometimes we'd like to have one of the others but we like... ask if we can have one beforehand? That's the goddamn bare minimum when wanting someone's food? Fuck his hurt feelings, he's straight up not respecting YOURS.

Water and coffee mainly. I’ll drink tea when I’m sick.

Re: What beverages do you usually drink most days?

Water in a gallon jug with one of the Crystal Light lemonade quart packets. I can't stand the taste of regular water (I can count on one hand the amount of times water actually tasted good to me), so this is my sacrifice to get more liquid in my diet. I do occasionally have Powerade Zero and then like, a bottle of Coca-Cola on days we have pizza. But otherwise, it's lemonade.

Oh! And sometimes I have the lemon-flavored apple cider vinegar drink from Trader Joe's. It's really great when you're just feeling really gassy.

Re: What beverages do you usually drink most days?

(Anonymous) 2026-02-08 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Anon, I have to agree with everyone else that you have two separate problems here:

1. Your partner's physically and financially unhealthy sugar and caffeine addiction

2. Your partner's lack of respect for you

I agree with you that drinking that much sugary stuff a day is really excessive, unhealthy, and expensive, but a grown adult man can make his own choices there. You can talk to him about it and try to suggest other alternatives, like those drops or powders you mix into water, seltzer water, mixing a little fruit juice into plain water, a soda stream, flavored herbal/fruit teas, and just working on gradually increasing water intake and decreasing nonwater intake. But ultimately, that is up to him.

But the disrespect he is showing you by drinking soda you bought for yourself is a different matter. And also, financially, he should be completely responsible for buying his own drinks if he's going to be that excessive with it. Same with DoorDash deliveries. It is not fair or right of him to expect you to pay for his expensive habit.

I have to second the other anons who are saying that this might be signaling a serious relationship problem, and you really need to address it sooner rather than later. Maybe your relationship is peachy other than this one issue, but I'd ask you to think about whether or not there is other stuff going on where he is disrespecting you in a similar way.

I'm a big hot tea junkie. I also drink more water than I used to before covid because when I was going around with a mask on all the time I would have a very dry mouth when I came home and would want a glass of water right away and I kept up the habit even after I didn't wear a mask all the time because I figured drinking water is good for you anyway.
I drink Coke Zero when I want soda, I drink milk at night and usually with cake or cookies, and I usually drink beer, whiskey or wine when I want something w/alcohol. (my beer and wine preferences are specific and complicated so I won't go into them here)

2 cups of coffee every morning followed by a cup of oatmilk and then filtered tap water the rest of the day. I either get my water from the dispenser on the fridge or from a Brita pitcher. I have the pitcher upstairs in my office so I don’t have to go down to the fridge every time I need to refill my Nalgenes.
