That sucks, OP. I’m sorry. I wish they had treated you better.

(Anonymous) 2026-02-15 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not in this fandom but commiserations for the missed opportunity, OP. :(

(Anonymous) 2026-02-15 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
That sucks :(
At least they could have email that they no longer need this position covered or something

I'm sorry Secret OP. A missed opportunity like that sounds so painful to have missed.

I've been in similar shoes, and it's so hard not to feel bitter and comparative. I don't wish ill on the person who got doors opened for them, but I can't help but think "why couldn't that have been me?"

(Anonymous) 2026-02-15 07:10 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry this happened to you, but at the same time I don't think you should feel too bad. I'm unfamiliar with the content you're talking about, but the fact you sent in a mention, were actually heard, and were even offered a proposal is incredibly impressive!
Not hearing back on a job offer isn't that uncommon though, especially since your interaction was so casual. It doesn't take away the hurt, not at all, especially since HBO made famous a thing you essentially had proposed. That absolutely sucks.

Still, I don't think you owe them your silence either. I'm sure I'm missing some context, but they never profited off your idea, I assume? My guess is that whoever fielded the emails saw potential in yours and sent it up the ranks. It got high enough to offer potential work, but perhaps because they heard of HBO's fancam they either nixed it, or the people who dealt with the money required the offer to go through official means that bureaucracy took you out of, or more likely decided against it. Regardless, you should never consider yourself ghosted, this shit happens a lot. And I think it would do you well to talk about this with your fandom friends.

I like Fallout 4 a lot more. It really pisses them off when I tell them. c:

I'm a big FNV fan, but I liked S2 well enough. But I also don't consider it canon (whatever Godd Howard says), so I can separate my enjoyment of the game from what happens on screen.

My only major gripe is how they handled House. John Gonzalez (his original writer) stated in a Reddit AMA that his version of House wouldn't be doing the stuff TV series House does. :b

(Anonymous) 2026-02-15 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
I just ignore the show entirely because tv/film adaptations of video games are never good.

Alright, there's actually a lot to unpack here. Mostly, I agree with you. But they do have a point.
I just started getting into Fallout when NV came out. I was playing 3 when it seemed like everyone declared that NV was the best thing ever, and anyone who enjoyed 3 was shit. It was obnoxious as hell, I didn't even want to play NV because they were so entitled about it.

The thing about sequels though, is that they continue from the last page, they don't create an entire new reality that steals the theme and jigsaws the rest together like a puzzle without a picture. NV actually played true to Fallout 1 & 2, they had a real rpg, that both honoured and created a genuinely great game from it's source. Something that 3 (mostly), 4 (entirely), 76, (TV and onward?) plainly refused to do.

I loved 3, and I haven't been able to get through NV once. Not because of its gameplay but because Bethesda gave Obsidian a practically impossible task, to create a game with limited funds, a short timespan, and to make sure it stood up. They set them up to fail, that is a fact, it's even part of why Obsidian doesn't exist anymore.
The game is immersive, but it's buggy as all fuck. Games used to crash a lot back then, but NV crashes AT LEAST 10x more than average. Fans of the game (my sister even) have gone out of their way to call this endearing. (They're wrong) It's not so much that the game sucks, as much as it's all but literally unplayable.

Thing about NV though, was that it was the black sheep of the series. Bethesda dropped Obsidian and they pretended it didn't happen. They fucked the fuck up with 4, (not an rpg) and I've never even pretended to be interested in 76. Fallout Shelter didn't even include it or its characters afaik.
I don't watch the series, but if they did suddenly include NV or its characters, then even I would have a problem with that, depending on the context.

The fans are beyond pretentious and absolutely need to get over themselves, but I wouldn't blame them for being annoyed if the show decided to dig up their canon after having it be decidedly buried for like an actual decade. Both on principle, and the fact that I wouldn't trust them to do any character right, let alone one from such a segregated piece of its shuddered past.

Ohhhh noooo I hadn't heard that the Fallout TV show went to New Vegas. I honestly might have watched it at some point, otherwise.

The problem with handling NV in any other adapted material is that its story is - unusually for its medium, and for all its faults (such as being buggy as hell as discussed above) - extremely thoughtful, engaging, and well-told. To the point where a tv writer, who would normally have no problem whatsoever meeting or exceeding fan expectations in their interpretation, might not be equal to the task.

So to tackle the problem, you have two options:

1) Engage with the story head-on. Do a deep dive into the lore, thoroughly understand what the writers were doing with it, grow your own narrative via an organic continuation of these themes (even if this means contradicting them this would remain satisfying to the viewer if it is clear that the story was completely understood and the same building blocks are used in your deconstruction). Due to the branching nature of the original, this would mean picking one ending to be canon, and the show's Mojave a future where the courier picks a specific path.

2) Nuke it all (literally or figuratively), refuse to give credence to or say anything about what happened in the game, do a complete blank-slate restart with your own characters.

Obviously, you have to believe you can hack it to do 1); if you think or know you can't, 2) remains your only option. A quick google tells me they chose 2), so that also tells me all I need to know about that. But hey! You know these locations!!! You've seen this screenshot!! NCR Ranger Armour! Mr House! Nostalgia! Nostalgia! Nostalgia!

This is sheer narrative cowardice and suggests that the writers are middling to poor, meaning that I can safely give this adaptation a pass.

You can lay that blame at the source material. Hot take, but Pinocchio never was a great novel, more like one long, heavy-handed cautionary tale.

Coming of age in the 90s, I read Wuthering Heights in school. It was the only required reading I devoured.

Then I spent the rest of my adult life either keeping quiet about it or trying to persuade haters that I wasn't a silly, brainless girl for romanticizing its trashiness.

And I'm done. I love it. Period. Completely and unapologetically. IDGAF what anyone thinks that says about me as a person. And I feel vindicated by the new adaptation. I feel like it's finally OK to revel in its death-by-uncontrollable-passion glory. I feel free.

I don't understand the mindset of people who upon seeing a thread or a post dedicated to a dead celebrity and just comment "I don't care. I was never a fan. People die every day. Get over it"
If you really don't care . Why even comment in the thread? To get attention? To piss off the fans?

I pretty much never read reviews before reading a book. I only like to read them after finishing the book to see what other people thought. Sometimes they make me see the book in a different light or highlight things I didn't notice on my way through so it's nice. But I have zero interest in discussing or debating those thoughts with randos, only in browsing people's reactions, taking in the interesting bits, and discarding the rest.

I do most of fandom the same way.
