The first rule of all fandoms seems to be that half the fans are only there to complain about the thing they are supposed to be fans of. It is so exhausting, why must we be there to hatewatch or "ironically" watch, can we not just watch-watch and enjoy it? [Fandom is.... oh, lets say Scrubs and The Wuzzles]

Have literally not thought about the Wuzzles for years.

Last I heard of that fandom, they were angry because the Ducktales reboot parodied the Wuzzles as horrible mutant monsters.

I've caught a few on 80 cartoon youtubes, it's a lot wittier than I remembered.

Oh man, I LOVED the Wuzzles! So many people I talk to have no idea what it is.

Man, this is so true. These days, I see it mostly with a video game that I play. The subreddit is filled with people who seem to fucking hate it, think the devs are terrible people, pooh pooh any development news because "devs are lazy and never actually do what they say they're going to" (there are quarterly updates to the game, in which they...do in fact do the things they say they're going to do), and so on and so forth, and yet keep hanging out the fucking sub and playing the game! Like, go do something else if you hate it so much, this doesn't make any sense. You are wasting time that could be spent playing and talking about a game you actually like.

I feel this. So many fandoms have become this. And not just full of hate, but an inability to allow people to disagree with their hate and enjoy the things they hate.

yeah, I've taken a big step back from hanging out in this one community because they've just started overanalyzing and criticizing everything and it was really affecting my enjoyment of the show. Now I'm enjoying things more. I always tend to do better on the outskirts of fandom anyway.

Oof yeah. One of my favorite movies of all time has a discord group I'm very happy not to be in, as a fellow fan who is there has reported exactly this behavior. I just don't need that negativity in my life.

I think it can be healthy/fun to dissect the things you love, even be critical of them (I'd certainly rather be able to acknowledge the faults in a thing I love than knee jerk insist they don't exist), I have LOTS of complaints about things I genuinely enjoy, but like... I *do* enjoy them and I'm not trying to shit on other enjoyers if I say 'man, this aspect could have been improved'. Meanwhile there is one guy who certainly... like, vocally proclaims himself a mega fan of my own main fandom, while taking the meanest and most uncharitable lens towards every little thing. (from as far as I can know just based on what he says publicly, he does also seem to be one of those people who rails against the idea of getting better, re: depression, and I'm not surprised those two views go hand in hand, it's all focusing on misery)

I feel like it's legit for people to want to critique the media they enjoy.

I'm not made that way. If I get excited about media, I go in all heart-eyes like puppy love, brush aside what I don't like, and squee about my feels.

I stopped doing fandom.

I feel like there is a difference between criticism and the huge levels of hate we see today without any love at all. And the hate that believes it is objective and that the things they hate shouldn't exist. And those with all the hate taking over the fandom spaces and not even leaving much room for love.

I still have my Eleroo plush from my childhood back in late 80s, early 90sz

I've a personal theory that complaining and hating on one's own fandom is part of famdoming for some people.

It's like being part of a family you can't turn your back on. Or working a job.
You're not happy with the circumstances, but there are factors keeping you around. So you spend your time bitching rather than leave.

With that in mind, I don't engage much with fandom complainers. I have enough family members and coworkers who think being in the same space means we're here to bitch and shit talk together.

I get needing to bitch and vent every now and again, but if the majority/all a fandomer does is bitch about what they hate in the fandom, I'll try to avoid that.
It can get so boring bitching and complaining.
