I really wish self-shippers/yumeshippers over the age of 15 would GTFO of fandom.

It gets very hard to try to convince non-fandom normies that the vast majority of us do in fact understand the difference between fiction and reality and that we don't actually want to do all of the weird things we read and write about in real life when there are grownass adults out there proclaiming with their whole chest how they personally want to fuck fictional characters.

...is there a regular FSer that is under 15??

(Anonymous) 2026-04-20 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Genuinely asking, who gives a damn what non-fandom normies think about fandom?

I think fandom is an activity pioneered by freaks, for other freaks. If you can't hang with that, maybe you should go do something else imo.

Nah. I’d rather have fans in fandom than non fandom people hanging around like they’re tourists.

...you think it is unusual to find fictional characters hot and want to fuck them? Even people NOT "in fandom" want to fuck fictional characters.

IMO at least there's a pretty big difference between finding a fictional character hot and wanting to fuck them versus actually shipping yourself with them. I wouldn't bat an eye at people saying doing the first thing but I do agree that the second one is kind of weird.

If they can’t handle what fans are doing in fandom then they don’t belong, not the other way around.

I'm more bothered by the people who refuse to see difference between fiction and reality and police ppl about it. Ppl doing/saying weird but harmless stuff and not hurting anybody are fine.

"the people who refuse to see difference between fiction and reality and police ppl about it" that I've encountered have tended to BE "yume shippers." I've seen them get mad that someone drew shippy fan art of their "fictional other" with another character because they saw this as the "fictional other" being made to cheat on them

SO many thoughts here

(Anonymous) 2026-04-20 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
This secret confuses me for a few different reasons. I'm just going to ramble them in no particular order.

15 is so young and seems like such a weird arbitrary age. I read this secret over several times thinking you meant to say "under 15" but you have that whole "grown ass adults" part so no. But it just is such a really weird age to choose that I got stuck on it. What is the youngest you would allow? Is there only like two years that you'd allow people to be into self shipping?

Are kids really here using FandomSecrest in the year 2026? I think 15 was pretty young for this comm even in its heyday.

Why do you think the "grownass adults" are being literal when you're not? The grownass adults talking about fucking characters, generally speaking, also understand the difference between fiction and reality and don't actually want to do all the weird things they talk and write and read about. It's fandom. People talk the talk and have fun.

Why are you even trying to convince non-fandom normies anything about fandom? Why are you even talking about fandom to non-fandom people?

This also makes me laugh in nostalgia. There used to be SO MANY debates in fandom about people being "too old" for fandom and how it was "creepy." I remember seeing people say you should grow out of fandom in your 20s otherwise it's creepy and sad. I haven't really seen much of the fandom age gatekeeping so this was a fun throwback. Though again, never seen anyone say 16yos were too old. That's definitely a new take on an old hot topic.

Ahhh the "respectability politics" mindset wielded in the dumbest way possible.

Fun fact: If you're heavily into fandom, you have more in common with the self-shipper than you do with the "normies", and you're gonna have to come to terms with that.

If you're not heavily into fandom, but just like to consume fan content and sometimes chat with other fans, that means *you're* the normie (and that's totally okay!). But that doesn't mean you get to dictate how the rest of fandom behaves, and fandom does not have to purge itself of "weirdness" just so you don't feel embarrassed about a side hobby. Weirdness literally built the fandom house.

I somewhat agree with this to a point in that if some adult individuals take this very, very seriously to the detriment of everything else in their lives, it stops being a healthy coping mechanism or outlet for fun and becomes an unhealthy, monomaniacal obsession.

Though I am speaking from personal experience in that I lost one of my oldest friends, who's the same age as me, to their intense yumeshipping where they basically shut everyone they knew out except other yumeshippers without any sort of warning. Didn't even say anything about it to them except the occasional compliment on art they commissioned, too.

I feel like I'm reading this secret very differently from most of the other people in this thread. When I see the term "self-shippers/yumeshippers," that makes me think not of people who want to fuck fictional characters but the people who want to fuck fictional characters and then write entire fanfics/draw fanart about them doing just that. The 'married to Snape on the astral plane' sort of people, in other words. And yeah, I can see why people not in fandom would see that kind of thing and think that fandom has trouble understanding the boundaries between fiction and reality, because that's pretty much what that is.

understand the difference between fiction and reality

I think I see what this post is about.

There's one group of fans in particular that uses this dogwhistle to dunk on people expressing very legitimate disgust at fans glorifying unambiguous incest, pedophilia, racism and other dynamics found weird by so-called "normies".

As a yumeshipper, it will never not amuse me how proshippers of all people in fandom will clutch their pearls, feigning concern for yumes' mental health at what essentially amounts to harmless roleplay. Barring a handful of extremists, most of us know our f/os aren't real, that's often the whole point.

Proshippers can wish for yumeshippers to leave fandom all they want, but normies (read: normal people) are still going to find other things left behind in fandom just as weird, if not weirder. And not because they cannot differentiate between fiction and reality.

Nope. I’m not into self shipping and I don’t care if people are, they are more than allowed to have fun with what they’re into.

Ship and let ship for me includes letting people have fun with their cringey OC (actually a self-insert)/Character art. The only time I don’t like it is because I’ve noticed an increase in generated slop on Instagram and tumblr… but to be fair that’s happened to Canon Character/Canon Character ships too.

Takes like these are so weird. If you're not a yumeshipper, you're not one. Anyone who would want to easily conflate all fandomers as the weirdest aspects of fandom are people whose opinions aren't worth investing in. Given that they will dismiss fandom as awkward virgins who can only fuck in fiction, why is OP up in arms about "not being one of those types of fans"? Because said "normies" don't care if you're one of weird ones or not. They will otherize in any other way they see fit, quit dancing for their attention. It's just their attention you're getting. Not their approval or respect.

But sure, blame the yumeshippers for your feelings of inferiority and cringe.
