Anyone else prepping for the energy crisis?

(Anonymous) 2026-05-17 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
American here, not a doomer, but damn. If grocery prices go much higher, we're gonna struggle.

I've been buying 3x the usual shelf stable foods each week for the past month. Mostly pasta & sauce, rice and dry beans, nuts, evaporated milk, canned soup and vegetables, seasonings and condiments.

After a pandemic and 2 back-to-back layoffs, I finally understand why my grandparents lived the way they did.

Shit yeah, if folks haven't been doing beans, they're sure as hell going to learn. I've been occasionally breaking out the chickpeas and lentils myself. Got a rice cooker too, and hope to learn more about pickling.

I admit I do go out for a meal every now and then still, but I've cut way down. At this point, I'll be making my own pizza from scratch. Thank goodness for Costco too. Eggs and rotisserie chicken for cheap (or at least cheaper).

I got a box of some shelf stable stuff. Been debating if I should get a portable stove and some fuel to keep on hand but I'm not sure where I'd store that.

Yeah, for the last couple of months I've been taking advantage of every bogo I can find for shelf stable items. We don't have a whole lot of room in our place, much less a pantry, but I'm shoving things wherever I can fit them.

We don't have much room, either, so I'm prioritizing rice, dried beans, and and nuts.

Been noticing the price of rice already climbing at Aldi.

ELI5?

Pretend I have been living in a cave - energy crisis?

Orange Mussolini attacked Iran, which has closed the Straight of Hormuz. A ton of the world's oil and something like a third of all fertilizer goes through there. As such, a prices for gas have gone up, especially for airlines and shipping companies. It's why Spirit Airlines went out of business randomly at 3am and pilots got the news that they were out of a job in the air. Farmers have not received their fertilizer at the most important planting time, so a lot of them have decided to just let the fields lie fallow, meaning that there will be a shortage of food come fall, if not sooner.

Several countries have moved to four day workweeks to save on power and gas for transit.

Soaring gas prices, food shortages this fall... oh, and let's not forget the Big Beautiful Bill, which kicks in after the midterms, so that everyone can blame the Democrats for losing their healthcare and even higher prices on everything (and for the record, some of the blame does lie with Democrats for not putting that vile piece of shit behind bars when they had the chance, but I've grown tired of this bullshit pattern that Republicans use to pretend they're fiscally conservative with better policies).

sa

oops, I guess that was a slight tangent and mostly about America. But still a good warning to stock up, wherever you are.

AYRT

I was thinking that, since the States makes most of its own fertilizer (maybe enough to also export some? I'm no expert), that we wouldn't see as much food shortage, but given the price increases already across the board for all goods and services (and all of our tax monies being stolen for that stupid ballroom and to enrich his cronies), it will be more of an artificial shortage due to most Americans being priced out.

I know that experts say it will be especially harrowing for almost all islands since they have to import either fertilizer or food to sustain their populations.

The price of oil has skyrocketed due to the closure of the Straight of Hormuz. Which makes everything transported by gasoline more expensive.

I've always maintained a small stockpile of shelf-stable food, just because I get lazy or careless and sometimes end up having to put together a meal last minute. And since COVID, I make sure we don't get too low on toilet paper and toiletries in general before I buy more.

I'd say that if people plan on eating more beans/legumes, consider stocking up on herbs and spices as well because those aren't likely to get any cheaper, either. I'm actually considering buying a pressure cooker or instant pot because they're supposed to be pretty good at cooking dried beans/legumes without taking hours.

I love my instant pot. It works incredibly well for exactly the reasons you stated.

It's probably time I dusted off my solar cookers. I've been using solar power lately, but you can't beat a cardboard box cooker for fun and efficiency and as a talking point. It's almost winter here, but the parabolic design concentrates the energy nicely.
