Sing it.

On the other hand, we do have to remember that Artie is a teenage boy, with the requisite maturity level. Although it does bother me that the show whiplashes between depicting her as crushed by her social anxiety and as totally not affected by it at all (e.g. the laughing with friends in the Dancing With Myself sequence, although to be fair that may be a case of unreliable narrator as we're seeing her through Artie's eyes.)

(Anonymous) 2010-01-17 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
I just wanted to point out that, as a person who suffers from Social Anxiety, people dealing with SA can easily 'whiplash' as you say. Anxiety varies for everyone afflicted with it. from day to day, situation to situation, etc. When I'm with my friends, I'm happy, laughing and confident most of the time. Some of my friends aren't even aware that I have SA. But when faced with a situation that causes me anxiety, I end up in tears, easily. It all just depends, yanno? Some days, I just feel braver than others. Just putting that out there.

[identity profile] theelusiven.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
Good to know. Thanks for the perspective.

[identity profile] gravity-xx.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree completely. People seem to view her as a liar when they aren't really getting why she lied in the first place.

Not saying that her lying is a good thing but her telling the truth and finally opening up to making friends was really important to her as a character and I don't think a lot of people picked up on that.

[identity profile] justaminuet.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, this. I was horribly shy when I was little, and the thought of public speaking terrified me. I totally sympathized with her on that level. I could definitely see where Artie was coming from (though really, paraplegic =/= stutter), but he was way too harsh, especially considering how quickly she wanted to confide in him a secret that she'd kept hidden from all her friends for years. She placed a lot of trust in him in that moment, and my heart broke a little when he shoved it back in her face with almost no thought.

[identity profile] jockchic.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Seconded, and "dismissed too easily" is a perfect motto for almost every other Glee storyline, too. I just try to remember that this is being billed as a comedy with drama, not a drama with comedy, which makes it a little easier for me to accept all these diminished facets as situational comedy.

[identity profile] timid--timbuktu.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought Artie's reaction was ridiculous. His very flawed analogy of paralysis and a speech impediment aside, the fact the she wasn't in fact disabled means he is no longer into her? That he loved her because of her disability rather than in spite of it? Isn't that just as shallow as her not being attracted to him because he's in the chair? That whole scene was completely illogical.

[identity profile] kitty-wake.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Couldn't he be disappointed that she lied to everyone, which includes him? The fact that she lied about a disability is immaterial.

[identity profile] timid--timbuktu.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
The crux of his argument -slash- the source of his anger is that they no longer have something in common. The lying was definitely important (but the severe social anxiety she had to fake a stutter is as much a disability as an actual stutter if you ask me, and why he didn't consider that or infer that from her confession baffles me) but I think what really upset him is he thought that the were on a more equal playing field and now he feels like the junior partner or something. And that is his problem, not Tina's.

[identity profile] saramiskismet.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Their disability being the reason they were both somewhat ostracized from the rest of the school was the foundation of their relationship, and where Artie felt their original connection came from, where they could understand each other. So yeah, a lot of it has to do with that because he's a lonely guy. They've probably built a solid friendship since this original connection, but when he finds out the whole beginning is a lie...? I understand his response, but I feel like they really need to return to this. It shouldn't have ended that abruptly, they both have stuff to work through.

[identity profile] ipleadthe5th.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
For me it wasn't so much that Artie liked her because he thought she was disabled (and it kind of kills me that Kevin McHale thinks that's what it is :/ I wish he'd speak to disabled people) -- it was

1) that Tina was benefitting from pretending to be disabled. For instance, imagine you're disabled and your friend tells you she's been pretending to be disabled for years to get healthcare benefits.

2) Artie is super nice and mild, because if he were any other way, people would ostracize him even more than they already do for being in a wheelchair. He can't afford to push people away. And Tina basically told him she pretended to be disabled so it'd push people away, and that he'd understand what she means because his disability pushes people away. That was kind of a dick thing to say, i.e. she doesn't understand what it's like for him.

Which doesn't invalidate all the other points made in the thread, mind you. They just weren't in the same wavelength, but hopefully that'll change in the next season. (Although I actually ship Artie with Quinn, ahaha.)

(Anonymous) 2010-01-17 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously, THIS. I don't think that the series writers or the OP (or the people agreeing with them) really get just how often some of us with disabilities get that kind of "faking/exaggerating for special treatment" accusation- or how hurtful the stereotype is. (And then they go and pull the same trope a second time!) Artie has very valid reasons to be pissed off about her revelation, and I wish the show had gone into those those rather than playing it the way they did.

I hate to say this, but I can't shake the idea that they made it a lie because she was so terrible at fake-stuttering and didn't want her to have to keep it up for several (?) more seasons. :\

[identity profile] jlh.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
The thing is, I think it's very difficult for people who are lonely and somewhat ostracized like Artie to even comprehend social anxiety. Artie longs for friendship and connection, so I can see why he wouldn't be able to understand why someone would lie to avoid it. Also, they're all teens, and being perfectly understanding of other people's faults when you're a teenager is not that common.

And I think his disappointment re their having that in common was more about, well, she isn't feeling sorry for me and I can be more myself and not that guy in the wheelchair. With more confidence and maturity he'll probably be able to see that he can be himself with able people, too.

[identity profile] sensualcoco.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I don't blame Artie for being angry when he found out she was lying.

But I think the show should go back and give Tina and her social anxiety some more focus so the audience can understand and sympathize with her.

Seconded.

As someone who has dealt with social anxiety for most of her life (I was, at one point, diagnosed with agoraphobia), I completely agree.

[identity profile] sistermagpie.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
What I want to know is whether Artie was aware that that ep actually ended with two other members of his Glee Club lying even more blatantly for even more profit to themselves. Rachel and Finn's job-hunting at the end is far more offensive and plays even more into discriminatory feelings towards disabled people imo (the idea that being in a wheelchair means you get special treatment), but it was like a joke at the end of the ep that never got revisited again.

And in her case she was at least a stupid kid who was probably under actual distress when she originally lied. Those two seemed to have gotten the idea from the lesson that was supposed to make them think about their privilege as able-bodied people.

[identity profile] maisontv.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
I completely agree. Social anxiety disorder can be crippling too. I have it and it's agonizing for me to even eat in front of people.

[identity profile] chicafrom3.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, so much THIS.

I don't blame Artie at all for the way he reacted; I think it was a perfectly reasonable reaction (although, yeah, count me in on the :/ that Kevin McHale thinks Artie liked her because he thought she was disable) for where he was and the way teenagers think and the actual confession.

On the other hand? I desperately want to get Tina some help for her social anxiety, because "shyness" does not make you fake a disability for years to get people to give you space. That is serious social anxiety.

And it bothers me that the show appears to think it was as simple as shyness and now that she has the Glee club as friends she doesn't need to be shy anymore!! ...And the fact that they dropped her stutter completely after that episode without dealing with her, like, telling anyone besides Artie that it was fake. That bothers me, too.

WAY TO COMPLETELY FUCK UP SEVERAL DIFFERENT KINDS OF DISABILITIES AT ONCE, SHOW.

[identity profile] miakun.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah pretty much everything you said.

(although, yeah, count me in on the :/ that Kevin McHale thinks Artie liked her because he thought she was disable)

Count me in too! I think that's why I read it that way in the show and what caused me to seriously start disliking Artie.

[identity profile] hako-neko.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 06:52 am (UTC)(link)
It would be nice if the show would kindly elaborate on her character abit more. Then we can stop jumping to conclusions.

[identity profile] kelleah.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 07:58 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you so much for this. I hate the way people gang up on Tina in the LJ comms, but, unfortunately, we live in a society that sees psychological disorders as something you can simply "get over" or just move on. Tina's actual disability can be just as debilitating as Artie's, and, sadly, she probably won't receive any sympathy for it because it's the kind that you can't see in a mirror.

Social anxiety disorder, if left untreated, can manifest into extreme levels of psychoses that could result in the necessity for full-time clinical observation. You don't see many cases of people in wheelchairs being forced to live in sanitariums because they've been deemed a danger to themselves or others.

I'm not mad at Artie because he's a child who thought he had a kinship with a girl he liked. I don't expect him to be mature enough to understand that the psychological disability that led to Tina's decision to fake a stutter is not a simple case of right and wrong. And he'll either come around or not. What upsets me are the fans whom clearly are just as uninformed and immature as Artie.

[identity profile] mutantjules.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously, this. Stuttering is a disability, and faking one of those is not cool. But faking it so she could get out of talking to ANYONE is severe social anxiety and that ain't nothing either.

maybe we'll get into it when she finally gets an episode of her very own (A GIRL CAN DREAM!)
