Re: 147
(Anonymous) 2010-03-23 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)I am so fucking sick of the PC police jumping on anyone who says that whites (or straight people) have discrimmination, too.
This girl is OBESE! Let's say it out loud. She's fucking obese. I admire her for being comfortable in her own skin, but let's not hold her up as a role model for young women, any more than we should hold up anorexic models or Lindsay Lohan. Diabetes, heart disease, infertility, strokes...obesity is a big problem, and this girl needs to get healthy. It's not about being a size two. It's not about beauty. It's about health. I'm sick and fucking tired of paying higher insurance rates and higher taxes to pay for the health care of dumbasses who can't put down the cigarettes, the booze, the drugs or the Twinkies.
And she IS being given more latitude from criticism because she's black. FACT. People are saying how awesome she is about not caring what people think about her size. On one hand, she shouldn't care what other people think. On the other hand, being massively, morbidly obese is nothing to be proud of. All you have to do is look at the amount of shit written and said about Kirstie Alley, Kate Winslet, and other white actresses, compared to what is said about this girl, or Queen Latifah, Monique, etc...to know that there is a double standard. To me, that is not just unfair to white women, but to black! Are we saying that black women are incapable of recognizing that they are fat, unhealthy and ruining their future health?
How insulting!
I applaud this girl being strong and happy in her own skin. I shudder to think of anyone holding her up as a role model for young women.
And I don't give a fuck if the PC whiners like that or not.

(Anonymous) 2010-03-24 07:38 pm (UTC)(link)Re: 147
:l Not all young women look up to others because they want to look like them. Girls are perfectly capable of admiring a woman's talent, confidence and personality without needing to emulate their physical appearance.

(Anonymous) 2010-03-24 12:28 am (UTC)(link)Yeah, kill those old people! Kill the sick! Euthanise the disabled! Guess what, petal? You're going to get old, too, and probably sick some time in your life.
Personally, I'm sick of paying higher taxes for all those sports injuries and car accidents. Ban young men from sports and driving right away!
Re: 147
(Anonymous) 2010-03-24 07:01 pm (UTC)(link)Get serious.
Re: 147
What about the people who are injured playing sports, or who get pregnant, or who went out during a blizzard and got frostbite? Should they not receive medical care or treatment because you personally were not allowed to have a say in their decision to play football or get knocked up?
I've never heard anyone claim that she WASN'T obese, you know. It's more about acknowledging that human beings have worth regardless of their weight.
Re: 147
(Anonymous) 2010-03-24 06:59 pm (UTC)(link)Be serious. We all know the damage that happens. People aren't that stupid.
I didn't say she didn't have worth. I said that she is morbidly obese, and she is too talented, too pretty and too smart to keep saying that it doesn't matter, because it does.
Re: 147
Re: 147
(Anonymous) 2010-03-24 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)I'm saying that this girl is risking her health, and because she is being held up as a "role model" to young women, it is not a positive thing. I would say the same thing about an anorexic actress.
Jeez...I didn't realize that stuffing one's face with cheeseburgers was a "value system" subject.
Re: 147
It's a "value system" choice because it's every person's right to choose whether or not they want to diet/exercise or eat what they want and focus on other things, based on what they value more. You can't make that choice for them. And if you're suggesting they be denied health care, then you'd need to deny EVERYONE health care who has made a decision to do something which resulted in illness, injury, or a need for medical care. Unless you have a particular prejudice against fat people that you don't have for, say, athletes or people who drive cars.
Re: 147
(Anonymous) 2010-03-24 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)I said that the cost of these "choices" are being paid for by all of us, and that some of those choices are being lauded as something good, when we know it isn't good. People prance around, feeling entitled to their "free choices", all independent, until they are on the floor, grabbing their chests, demanding care. Freedom comes with responsibility. It's important that people weigh the costs of their choices, and recognize that sometimes we should be smart, not just for our own good, but for the good of all.
Like it or not, Gaby is a role model to impressionable young women. The media is pushing an attitude that her weight is not only not a bad thing for her health, but that she's some kind of heroine for not caring. That's not good.
I applaud her strong, confident, classy manner. I just am disturbed by the idea that other girls might interpret the message as being "you don't have to care about being fat", because that's not a good thing, any more than the media pushing being too thin is good.
I would love to see her take charge of her body, and health, and not do it to get "thin" for some fake Hollywood idea of beauty, but to be her very best, at whatever dress size, for health and her future. She's just too talented and adorable to die too young.
Re: 147
Yes, we all pay for people's choices. What you don't seem to be getting is that people who have health problems because of excess weight, and people who have health problems as a result of playing, say, contact sports, have both made choices that you are paying for. My father played football all through high school and college, and he has a lot of back problems as a result. Sometimes, he needs health care for these problems. Personally, I have no interest in football and think playing a dangerous sport that causes painful health problems later in life is a stupid choice. But I can't make that choice for anyone else. I can't force that value on anyone.
Some people play sports and never have any serious health problems, as a result. Some people eat crap, never exercise, and don't have any health problems as a result of that either. What I'm saying is that you seem to be drawing a line between "fat people" and people who have made other choices that later resulted in health problems, or people who have children and need to stay in the hospital to give birth, and saying that only fat people are in the wrong, that they are the only ones being irresponsible and misusing their freedoms. If you personally feel that exercising and eating right is more morally laudable than, say, choosing not to drive a car to avoid getting in an accident, great. But you don't get to apply your values to everyone else in America.
Yes, I've seen a passable amount of media coverage that depicts Gabourey Sidibe in a positive light and encourages the idea that bigger people are deserve to be treated with the same kindness and given the same opportunities as everyone else, regardless of their weight. I've never seen anything that said "being obese will not give you any health problems."

(Anonymous) 2010-03-24 07:02 pm (UTC)(link)Re: 147
I mean, it's disgusting how obese she is, but I REALLY admire how she's comfortable in her own skin. Not that she shouldn't take a different approach... like eating healthy (IDK if she does). You can do active things to get healthy while still feeling great about your body.
Re: 147
(Anonymous) 2010-03-24 07:07 pm (UTC)(link)I don't want to open the paper in ten years and read about this brilliant, talented, funny, cool girl being found dead in her apartment from a massive heart attack or stroke.
Look at Queen Latifah! She didn't try to be a size two. Just healthier, and more aware of her body, and preventing diabetes and heart disease that ran in her family.
I love Gaby's confidence and her talent. I just hate that people are glossing over the fact that her obesity is likely to cause her to die far too young. Strong, confident, talented and classy young black women are needed as role models. I think she's great, but I think she's being held up as a positive for being obese, and that's not good.
god damn it, guys.

~*~i guess not~*~
Re: 147
My main point though is that she may actually be a pretty healthy girl, and may actually lead a healthy lifestyle. Physical appearance belies most things, including health.
Re: 147
(Anonymous) 2010-03-24 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)Go on...I'll wait.
Now, walk around for the next year with it strapped to your body. Go ahead. Then let me know if your knees, your back and other parts are a wee bit sore.
My husband is a nurse practitioner. No matter how you slice it, or dice it, excess body weight puts pressure on the joints, the heart, the respritory system, the kidneys...all of you. This isn't rocket science.
Morbid obesity is on the rise in this country, and in other industrialized nations. Also on the rise? Infertility, diabetes, heart disease, colon cancer, breast cancer, strokes, back surgeries, c-sections, infant mortality, knee surgeries, hip replacement and other issues.
Children in the United States are dying, or being permanently disabled, from issues related directly to morbid obesity. One out of every four children in this country is considered obese.
What obesity does NOT correlate to is a person's talent, worth or beauty as a human being. I think this girl is a fantastic actress, and she seems like a genuinely wonderful person. I think she's awesome. But let's get a bit realistic...okay? While some people have a genetic problem with weight, and people can be healthy in all kinds of shapes and sizes, this young woman is morbidly obese, and she didn't get that way eating blueberries and broccoli.
Further, because of the amount of attention that the media is giving her (and rightly so, because she's awesome!), there are impressionable kids out there thinking that there is nothing wrong with being obese.
I just don't want to see her dead in ten years, like so many other talented people, because of something that is preventable.
