I hate to say this, but A-FREAKIN-MEN. I've noticed this for years, and I still don't have to courage to speak up about it.

Political correctness sucks.

Re: 147

You didn't have the "courage to speak up" about your racism? Somehow I think that phrase is usually used for people who are actually being oppressed, not people who are being stifled in their ability to oppress others.

Re: 147

[identity profile] birdboy2000.livejournal.com 2010-03-23 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Racism: "We need to send the n***** back to Africa to save our white nation"
Not racism: "Society is more accepting of women being overweight when they're African-American"

Learn the difference.

Re: 147

[identity profile] powercorrupts.livejournal.com 2010-03-23 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
No, you learn the difference. Did you see that comment that was being replied to?

OH, but she's black! That makes it ALL OKAY.

Reverse racism FTW.

Those words aren't completely fucking ignorant? Those words aren't implying that white women have it soooo hard, damn those black people for getting it easy?

"Society is more accepting of women being overweight when they're African-American"

In what fucking universe?

Re: 147

(Anonymous) 2010-03-23 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
See, you pointing fingers and calling me names is the reason why I haven't spoken up. I just don't want to deal with that immaturity, kthx.

I don't give a crap about how much someone weighs, no matter what race. It isn't up to me to tell someone how they should deal with their body. My point is that the media tip-toes around weight when it comes to non-white celebrities. Gabourey Sidibe is gorgeous, yet it's OK to call Kate Winslet chubby. Something doesn't compute when I see stuff like that!

With all that said, I don't dislike Gabourey Sidibe (or any other overweight actress who happens to be non-white) one bit. My criticism lies within the media and their double standards. Political correctness does NOT equal racial tolerance.

Re: 147

[identity profile] powercorrupts.livejournal.com 2010-03-23 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
You're agreeing with a person using the words "reverse racism." Are you aware of the connotation of those words? Do you know the context of their use?

You're siding with someone who is using words that are frequently used to demean POCs who achieve something, used to accuse their success of being falsely manufactured and not deserved. Those words are used to imply that said POC couldn't possibly have accomplished it on their own.

You might have some form of ration behind what you're saying, but when you stand next to a person using terms that are loaded with a history of use to demean people, you look an awful lot like you're standing up for a bigot.

Or maybe it has something to do with the fact that she's a teenager who is new to the game and likely will never be cast as anything significant again, and Kate Winslet is both a woman and old hat, and thus much fairer game in their eyes?

*applause*

I am so fucking sick of the PC police jumping on anyone who says that whites (or straight people) have discrimmination, too.

This girl is OBESE! Let's say it out loud. She's fucking obese. I admire her for being comfortable in her own skin, but let's not hold her up as a role model for young women, any more than we should hold up anorexic models or Lindsay Lohan. Diabetes, heart disease, infertility, strokes...obesity is a big problem, and this girl needs to get healthy. It's not about being a size two. It's not about beauty. It's about health. I'm sick and fucking tired of paying higher insurance rates and higher taxes to pay for the health care of dumbasses who can't put down the cigarettes, the booze, the drugs or the Twinkies.

And she IS being given more latitude from criticism because she's black. FACT. People are saying how awesome she is about not caring what people think about her size. On one hand, she shouldn't care what other people think. On the other hand, being massively, morbidly obese is nothing to be proud of. All you have to do is look at the amount of shit written and said about Kirstie Alley, Kate Winslet, and other white actresses, compared to what is said about this girl, or Queen Latifah, Monique, etc...to know that there is a double standard. To me, that is not just unfair to white women, but to black! Are we saying that black women are incapable of recognizing that they are fat, unhealthy and ruining their future health?

How insulting!

I applaud this girl being strong and happy in her own skin. I shudder to think of anyone holding her up as a role model for young women.

And I don't give a fuck if the PC whiners like that or not.

Re: 147

(Anonymous) 2010-03-23 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)

:l Not all young women look up to others because they want to look like them. Girls are perfectly capable of admiring a woman's talent, confidence and personality without needing to emulate their physical appearance.

Re: 147

[identity profile] carey-pontmercy.livejournal.com 2010-03-23 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Um...there's more to a person than her appearance or health. You can look up to a person for some reasons but not for others. You know, unless you insist on being simplistic.

Re: 147

FACT.

Yeah, kill those old people! Kill the sick! Euthanise the disabled! Guess what, petal? You're going to get old, too, and probably sick some time in your life.

Personally, I'm sick of paying higher taxes for all those sports injuries and car accidents. Ban young men from sports and driving right away!

Re: 147

(Anonymous) 2010-03-24 07:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't be so dense and stupid. Come on. Are you seriously defending people smoking, boozing, drugging and eating themselves into early graves, when we all know it's completely preventable?

Get serious.

Re: 147

I'm sick and fucking tired of paying higher insurance rates and higher taxes to pay for the health care of dumbasses who can't put down the cigarettes, the booze, the drugs or the Twinkies.

What about the people who are injured playing sports, or who get pregnant, or who went out during a blizzard and got frostbite? Should they not receive medical care or treatment because you personally were not allowed to have a say in their decision to play football or get knocked up?

I've never heard anyone claim that she WASN'T obese, you know. It's more about acknowledging that human beings have worth regardless of their weight.

Re: 147

(Anonymous) 2010-03-24 06:59 pm (UTC)(link)
People get sick all the time, get pregnant, whatever. I'm saying that boozing, smoking, doping and stuffing your face with massive amounts of unhealthy junk are preventable, and we all know that.

Be serious. We all know the damage that happens. People aren't that stupid.

I didn't say she didn't have worth. I said that she is morbidly obese, and she is too talented, too pretty and too smart to keep saying that it doesn't matter, because it does.

THIS.

I mean, it's disgusting how obese she is, but I REALLY admire how she's comfortable in her own skin. Not that she shouldn't take a different approach... like eating healthy (IDK if she does). You can do active things to get healthy while still feeling great about your body.

You don't know anything about her health. Obesity is correlated to, but does not necessarily mean heart disease, diabetes, or even high cholesterol. Furthermore, depending on genetic dispositions, some people may have a very hard time keeping within a healthy weight - even if they eat normally and even exercise. Fat does not automatically mean unhealthy, nor does it mean that they're necessarily comfortable with being fat as they have to live with consequences of circumstances that are not entirely their fault.

My main point though is that she may actually be a pretty healthy girl, and may actually lead a healthy lifestyle. Physical appearance belies most things, including health.
