Me tooo!

I am planning on calling my car Joanna.

Preach.

Citation needed? Don't tell me you've never heard misogynists say that women are "weaker" and "more emotional". Don't tell me you've never heard the expression "I hate to see a grown man cry". I'd say that's one of the biggest issues of discrimination against women, that people assume that women are prone to breaking down in tears while men can just buck up and face things. It is true that women are expected not to express anger but rather to express defeat, but my point was less that women get off easy (which they don't) and more that people expect men to deal with problems in a different way.
We agree on a very important fact: The differences between men and women are much, much smaller than the differences in the social expectations of men and the social expectations of women. This is the biggest reason why male characters and female characters are different. At the same time, it's simply irresponsible to claim that men and women are innately the same. Biology has proven otherwise. Men and women do think differently, and behave differently. The difference is small, but it's there, and shouldn't be ignored. If the minds of men and women were identical, gender identity wouldn't be an issue, because the only determinant of gender would be the body. I do not fit many stereotypical views of women, myself, but my mind is not very feminine.
Chivalry may be the reasons some authors prefer not to hurt women, but not I. I just happen to enjoy writing stories in which male characters get hurt. This is probably because I find men sexually attractive.

I don't even remember who it was, actually might have been Donald, but they were in some auto baby caring machine, and the hands powdered and bathed and diapered them and then put them in a crib with a bottle. And they fought the whole thing until the crib and bottle, then just quietly contentedly fell asleep.

Yeah...

[identity profile] smirk-dog.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, now.

[identity profile] smirk-dog.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
S'okay.

[identity profile] duckfight.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
You know what, OP? I thought the exact same thing until I read this secret. I thought they were just being a pair of tits in this scene, which is the way my friends and I act all of the time. Don't attempt anything without the gloves!

[identity profile] smirk-dog.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
I am the Eric Foreman of my group, as well.

What we endure...

[identity profile] demiincarnate.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
He would, though, if only because everyone else would fail. The only other character I can see being a relatively sane, loving father is Heavy, and he would probably sit on the kid by accident or something.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-27 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
Because some people choose to give others a specific heads-up. But it is not a requirement for posting a secret here. If you read secrets, you do so at your own risk.

[identity profile] momo36.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly! That's what I came here to comment on.

[identity profile] xanykaos.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
Having just come back from DisneyWorld with a newfound love for Donald Duck...um...dude.

On a more serious note, OP, I hope things look up for you soon.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-27 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
Well, obviously. The majority of plots and characters are gender-reversible and anyone who tries to deny that is simply ridiculous. However, it's a bit ignorant to claim that it is always possible to have either a male or female as the protagonist, due to situations I already mentioned. I think this was just a case of misunderstanding.

[identity profile] demiincarnate.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly what I was trying to say, except way more eloquent and thorough! You are one smart cookie.

[identity profile] oflittlebrain.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
ME TOO ME TOO
the monsters weren't scary to me because they were always so bad at spelling C:

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Hah hah, thanks :3 One of my current fandoms deals with this issue, so that example is in the forefront of my mind. The US's SFOD-D doesn't allow women into the unit, and the game is about Delta force guys. There is one woman in the unit, but she's a communications liason, not a member of the team proper, even though she joins them on missions as part of the assault force and is as competent as they are. But as a result of the sexism in American society not zomg women have different brains and can't handle combat or whatever bunk has been assumed in this discussion, she has had a different experience than the men. First of all, her culture thinks differently of women who want to be soldiers than men. Second of all, she's not allowed to be part of the team proper, doesn't shower or change with them - she has had different experiences than the men, and denying her these experiences is irrational and misogynist :/ Her different experiences don't mean she's not an awesome soldier, just like the men.

Of course, if they were Canada's JTF-2 she would be part of the unit proper, and her experiences would be more similar to those of the men. But then they would be Canadians, not Americans, and their culture would be different.

Sounds kinda like the Robin Hood test.

THANK YOU! ♥

On the one hand, I'm pleasantly surprised to see Wes get so much attention lately. On the other, boy, does he ever seem to attract the batshit coconuts contingent. I guess that's not surprising, given who he is, but I'm not sure what this says about me, as he is my all-time favorite character of anything ever.

[identity profile] openedbook.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
I think, at least for me, it'll be more of a silence than being sad/crying. I eman, I cried at the end of Nemesis when Data died. (and I doubt I'll ever watch that movie again) I can liken it to the silence that came after MJ's death. But, what else can we do but celebrate how awesome they were.

I wish I could explain what I mean, OP. :/ I would link you to my fanfic, but it's K/S w/ character death and some people squick at that.

Even as a baby trekkie (and by that I mean it's only been less than a year since I got into Trek) I can understand, I think we all do. At least it's somehthing we can share. Maybe us trekkies are special becasue we can.

[identity profile] demiincarnate.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
OH NO WE ARE BOTH SO SEXIST ;-;
Haha, yeah. I guess I take the easy way out by telling the man's story. For me, it's kind of like: I have to face discrimination myself in my own life and profession, I don't want to make my main character have to face it too. My main characters have enough to worry about.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-27 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
we <3 you too!
