Your last point made me throw a fit. Besides the major points of WWII, I thought trenchfoot was a problem in WWI when they used a lot of trenches. I don't remember trenches when we went over WWII.

brb lmao

[identity profile] twyla-hime.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
I totally agree. I'm not a big fan of the words period, but the only time I don't mind is if it's from the POV of a character who is vulgar and uses such language. Or if it's about a canon universe that's very gritty and macho. Then it fits in.

And it sure as hell shouldn't work it's way into dialogue if said character wouldn't say such a word. (They'd have to be properly motivated, I think. Extra thought and work is then required from the writer.)

You just made my whole night.

Eh, it was more just telling me where to go and laughing at me when I managed to kill myself on a barrel and yelling "SHOOT FOR THE HEAD, SHOOT FOR THE FUCKING HEAD!"

There are fics with him swearing?

...dude.

OP here

Just wanted to apologize for how crappy my secret looks - my Photoshop skills are teh suxxors :(

And for the record I did see it again with my friend and made it through - and it was just as if not even more awesome the second time around and I would totally see it a third time. Also my friend and I both commiserated over how hard we cried over the last 30 minutes.

B!S I am totally going to see Cars 2 just for the Toy Story short that will be in front of it.

From my experiences on dA, there are plenty of amazingly talented artists who never get more than a few thousand pageviews. It's pretty sad, but I guess that's the way of the world.

If you're looking for recognition (or even being a part of a community), maybe sites like livejournal and the like would be better for you?

[identity profile] nbaeker.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
You know.

This comm started as such a ridic idea, and it grew into this amazing group of people who just love each other so freaking much. I can't even begin to tell you how much each and every one of you guys means to me. From our barely-there's to our constant posters, to those who've played but had to leave. Each and every one of you is just... so. freaking. amazing.

I wish I could buy us all a real treehouse to hang out in. I just can't even begin to express how amazing I find you all. I wish I was better with words.

Ironically, this is been what I've been doing.

It's a great way for me to forget the work, or do the work halfheartedly so I get back to the fun stuff.

I do not understand the attraction.

[identity profile] demiincarnate.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
Fun fact: SOME PEOPLE DON'T WRITE SPECULATIVE FICTION
And it's not just patriarchy. Women and men have different roles in every society. This is because women get pregnant and make babies. Among other things.

this secret made me lol harder than anything steve martin's done in the past decade. what the fuck.

she's very pretty in a normal, I-could-have-grown-up-across-the-street-from-this-chick kind of way. Not stunning, but def not ugly. and I would be stupidly happy if she came out as a lesbian, I'm not even sure why.

also? watch The Runaways. (THANKS FOR MAKING ME INCAPABLE OF COMPLETELY HATING HER ANYMORE, THE RUNAWAYS)

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
So basically what you're saying is that female characters are so different from male characters that you find it 'easier' to write about men because you feel they're more 'familiar' to you

No, this isn't what I said either. Deliberately misreading statements to use them in your own argument isn't a particularly classy debate tactic; I don't recommend it, in future.

So, essentially, you're up in arms because we're talking about realistic, rather than speculative fiction. In particular speculative fiction in which there are no culturally perceived differences between males and females. That's a shame, I suppose.

You have a nice day, then.

[identity profile] demiincarnate.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
Those two grow on you! I used to just think they were kinda boring and nowadays they're just wandering into every fic I write, being cuddly and adorable.

I've never played this game, but he looks like the guy out of Treasure Mountain, which was one of the games I was practically brought up on. Any connection at all?

...Nixon-era politicians like Golda Meir? Oh, wait.

See, saying 'I write about Nixon-era politicians therefore I only write about men' is the sort of erasure that misogynists practice a lot. They don't write about women, therefore the women aren't there, even if the women were right there all along. Talking about 'sparing women' from supposed hardships is also a feature of misogyny, usually deployed in the form of chivalry - I think you're using it mostly as a rhetorical device, but really, it's not a very good one. And yes, queer women are used to the fact that the incessant focus on homophobic discrimination against queer men alone is a common form of misogyny.

I like fatherhood as a theme too, as it happens. I live in a world where fathers have daughters as well as sons, therefore I write about both men and women.

No, you're not obliged to write about things you don't want to write about, but it is fairly clear to me that the reason you don't want to write about these things is that you're (unconsciously, I am sure) sexist.

[identity profile] twyla-hime.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
It's definitely possible to go overboard. Like everyone has said if it's appropriate to the way the character really speaks, then it should be there to capture authenticity and realism. It's also important to remember that people curse during heightened emotional moments like: anger(obviously), fear, joking around, lust...etc.
But it should be regulated, toned up or down for it to have the most powerful effect.

[identity profile] blood-sorbet.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
He remembered the line. We just asked him to sign as Mike Dexter, and he signed with different quotes for each of us (for my friend, he wrote "I'll kick the ass of everyone here!" or whatever the line is...which was funny, because the photo was of Carlisle and the rest of the Twilight cast lmao).

He's pretty much the best guy ever <3
