I was basically driven out of a fandom too...and it is exactly that...the FANDOM...meaning more than one person.

I'm not OP, but I have the same issue as losing a love for a certain series because of the fandom...I couldn't stand to look at anything of said series or read into it, because the FANDOM was just so horrible about it...not just one person.

You have to be stupid not know that people follow examples of strong voices...and if that strong voice happens to be an obnoxious bitch about everything, then the rest of the fandom will think it's okay to be an obnoxious bitch about everything that is not of their (the original decider) tastes.

Someone brings this up every time there's an unmarked spoiler, but I don't get how it's supposed to help. Do you seriously expect anyone to avoid the ENTIRE COMM until they've finished every book/movie/game/whatever they might potentially ever want to finish?

They're all from the same original stock, right? The Gethenians and everyone else in the Ekumen are all descendants of some Old Earthican diaspora? And the Gethenians have been genetically modified to eliminate the sexes, but not in any other way. So it should work, in theory. I hadn't actually got as far as trying to figure out what the baby would be like - I guess I was thinking more that Estraven would die anyway, while pregnant, and then there would be OMG ANGST for everyone. Well, mostly for Ai.

I think sterile androgyne for the child seems most likely. Actually, come to think of it, is androgyne even the right word? Doesn't that technically mean having characteristic of both sexes? Really, a Gethenian outside of kemmer has characteristics of neither gender...

Also, I had to send a business letter at work last week to someone with the surname "Kemmerer" and I felt like I was telling a dirty joke. That no-one else in the world would appreciate. EXCEPT MAYBE YOU.

Yep. The creators of the show I do fandom for went so far as to make up their own swear words to replace the really big ones so that the characters could "swear" but it would get past the censors.

I do need to get out. Perhaps a part of me was reluctant to do so because I remember the good times we had together, that and the fact she'd make a very dangerous enemy.
Good thing we're only at the beginning, I think I'll still be able to remove all the plot points and characters created by her. Her ideas are rather entertaining, but I'm sure I can do without them.

That's horrible! I know exactly how you feel. No physical abuse can measure up to the feeling of being slowly erased from your social life. The worst thing is that when we met, she was really shy and reserved and showered me with praise and admirtion. When I helped her gain the confidence, she just started to imitate everything I do, and did things I was too shy to do. The end result? Some people believing I'm the one being secondary.

You're right. People tend to say that. But I suppose at the time I was so shocked to believe what's happening I could not react properly. It is a first time I've ever been hit, as I was lucky enough to grow up in a loving family. I don't even know how I got into this relationship in the first place.

That was my understanding, yes. They don't explicitly explain what happened, only that they BELIEVE the Gethenians were an abandoned genetic experiment planted on their planet by ancient Hainish people, whoever they were.

And yeah, Estraven would die anyway and lead to AnGsT but I still think about a lot of shit like that, especially when I like to toss the characters into other worlds and timelines and that sort of thing becomes possible. >.>
