I hate to agree with this, but, yeah. When those "post your pic" threads come around and I see how beautiful everyone in my fandom is compared to me, I get so depressed. I've always assumed good looking people have better things to do than sit around on their computers constantly, but no, even here in what's supposed to be loserville, the beautiful people rule.

Being attractive isn't everything... Even pretty people have problems. A hard concept to grasp, I know.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-18 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Because it's SO hard being pretty and well-liked.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-18 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
being attractive doesn't immediately make you well liked. jfc. pretty people can have loser personalities, just like you.

[identity profile] dementria.livejournal.com 2010-07-18 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't say anything about being "well-liked", just attractive. Being pretty doesn't make people like you. Especially if you have social anxiety disorders and just want to be a hermit.

Yes. Because being pretty is a magical bubble that shields you from societies ills. Pretty people dont have loved ones die. Pretty people dont get raped or hurt. Pretty people dont get diseases.

We are all people. We all have pain. To assume that looks prevent that is about as naive and foolish as saying money is the cure to all society's ills.

Maybe try not to be so bitter.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-18 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
this. the shit I've gone through in my life have left scars that being attractive doesn't ~magically heal~.

[identity profile] bleed-peroxide.livejournal.com 2010-07-18 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Beauty isn't everything. They have problems just like anyone else.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-18 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Like if they should wear Yves Saint-Laurent or Chanel!

(Anonymous) 2010-07-18 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
of course, because pretty people are also rich people. durr.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-18 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Because attractive equals rich, naturally!

[identity profile] bleed-peroxide.livejournal.com 2010-07-18 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, because someone being pretty naturally means they're rich as well.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-18 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
IKR, like choosing which hot guy/girl to go on a date with tonight. It must be so difficult getting hit on and being told you're gorgeous all the time.

[identity profile] bleed-peroxide.livejournal.com 2010-07-18 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
For one, I wasn't talking about myself, so chill the fuck down.

Secondly, that's incredibly ignorant. Just because you're attractive does not necessarily mean you're going to get dates or even be liked period. I've seen plenty of girls who could've been models, and I wonder why they're single and/or have very few friends. But they have the personality of a viper, and it's very easy to figure out why nobody goes near them. Beauty might get someone's attention, but that won't sustain the relationships if there's no other redeeming qualities to them.

Ah, yes, because clearly getting hit on is a always a positive experience. Unwanted attention is a myth!

(Anonymous) 2010-07-18 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
That happens all the time!? Wow, I should move to America because I'm pretty and I don't get that treatment all the time and I get hit on mostly by creepers.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-18 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
If you're asexual or a lesbian, it's kind of a pain in the ass to be constantly objectified by men. I go to a goddamn gay club and the few straight men there make a beeline for me, assuming that because I own a pair of skinny jeans and heels I must be looking for one of them, and they don't back the hell off. I'm not even particularly pretty, I'm just pretty for a lesbian nerd or something. Rachel Maddow is way cuter than me ffs.

Yeah, I love sexual harrassment even in places that I think are safe spaces for me. It's a lot of fun. I'm sure you'd have liked having your ass grabbed all through high school too, feeling like you weren't capable of fitting in or being popular, still bullied, but on top of that, getting felt up when you couldn't do anything about it because you were the little antisocial girl the VPs thought deserved a bullying or two.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-19 10:02 am (UTC)(link)
Oh my God, what planet do you live on? Please tell me, I really want to go there!

[identity profile] imnotasquirrel.livejournal.com 2010-07-18 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it depends on what the pretty people complain about. Because yes, of course attractive people have problems just like everyone else. But admittedly it is annoying as hell to hear attractive people complain about being attractive. Every time I heard that one woman from Lost (Evangeline Lilly?) bitch about how hard she had it as an attractive woman, I wanted to throw something.

I know that the people here aren't necessarily saying that, I just think that some people tend to conflate the two issues with each other.

ETA: I'm not saying that being attractive doesn't come with its own set of problems, e.g. in certain professions being drop-dead gorgeous may make it more difficult for people to take you seriously, but overall, attractive people do have it a lot easier in society. And it's grating to hear them say that they would rather be more plain-looking because being pretty is SO HARD.

Wait, fandom is "supposed" to be loserville? Where the fuck is that written down?

[identity profile] poke-fu.livejournal.com 2010-07-19 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that was my reaction as well.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-19 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
"Post your pic" threads are not an accurate representation of what fandom really looks like, because as a general rule, only the attractive people and/or people confident in their appearance post their pictures. The people with no self confidence and/or the people who aren't attractive don't usually post their picture, especially after seeing all the "hot" people posting theirs. That does not at all mean that the beautiful people rule.

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2010-07-19 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
Pssssst ... you're assuming they're posting their real photos!

(Anonymous) 2010-07-19 09:47 am (UTC)(link)
It's just like fat-camp. Some of the fat kids will become the popular fat kids, and they will bully the loser fat kids. In fandom, some of the losers become the popular losers, and they will harsh the loser losers' squee by being popular and, horror of horrors, maybe even pretty.
