There are sadly people like this out there. They love slash because it's always dramatic and tragic. Look at all the gay couples in the media who never have a happy ending, probility be damned, because het forbidden love got old so they had to move on to gay.

I'm one of them which is why I'm anon.
It's not that slash is always like that. It's not. RL gay relationships can be totally domestic. I should know that, I live next to such a couple.
But a het relationship in the modern setting just sounds like it has zero dramatic problems. You can have sex, get married, do anything you want. No one will be against it. No danger. Nothing. Just normal stuff. You open any magazine, see an ad, you see fluffy happy couples. That's the image het has. Easy. Accessible.
Slash, at least if you make it to be unusual in your worldbuilding, is better able to carry that romantic edge of sweetly forbidden, dangerous, marked by fate itself. Larger than life.

Grand and romantic trouble is brought about by setting, not by gender of the people involved. What makes forbidden gay romance forbidden? It takes place in a location / in circumstances that make it forbidden (the setting). What makes forbidden het romance forbidden? It takes place in a location / in circumstances that make it forbidden (the setting).

You can just as easily put a het romance in a setting where they're starcrossed as you can put a gay romance in a setting where they're starcrossed.

Can your father king throw you into jail for having a boyfriend he dislikes? They can't do crap. Religion, dunno, most people I know are atheists, others keep their religion to themselves. Profession? Eh, how? Unless he's a terrorist and she's a police officer. War ok. That's big.

Are you serious? Social class can totally be a deterrent to a relationship. Someone who grew up completely poor is going to have a hard time adjusting to suddenly being married to someone totally rich. Family and friends can't kill your fiance, but they can disapprove and work to keep you away from him (note that they can't kill your gay lover either, it works both ways). "Most people you know" might be atheists, but that doesn't mean all people are, and religion matters a hell of a lot -- a Muslim falling in love with a Jewish person, what then? Profession meaning they work together and an office romance is forbidden for whatever reason.

A girl who grew up in a bad part of town becomes an amazing professional thief. A man who's the sole heir to a huge fortune meets her, somehow discovers her secret, and is fascinated by her. His parents try to forbid him trying to see her because her alter-ego is a poor girl who lives in the slums and they think she's beneath him, his friends don't understand why he'd want to be with her and keep trying to get him affianced to some other nice rich girl, and the girl likes the guy, but she refuses to just marry him and start living off his money because she has her own pride to think about and also a criminal record that could get them both in huge trouble if they're married and the law figures out who she really is. They argue about morals all the time, the cops are after the girl, she ends up being hired to steal things from the guy's parents, she's caught doing it, and he gives up his comfortable life to run away with her when she escapes and they disappear into the city.

Turn that girl into a guy and oh no its gay but that doesn't add much more drama/exotic plot/forbidden romance, because all of that's already there.

That enough?
