The manga is what it is. It goes far more into the mythos of the universe in comparison to the anime, but it's pretty badly drawn at times and ect. I did enjoy it - but the best version of Sailor Moon will probably always be the live action (Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon) just because it blended what I liked in the manga with what I liked in the anime without a healthy side of character rape on the part of Rei and Usagi. If you haven't seen it, check it out, OP.

I think the manga's style is cute. The only thing that bugs me about it is that I can barely tell the persons apart. Like, Haruka and Motoki? Motoki und Jadeite? And many others. I know that "only six faces" is not a rare phenomenon, but in this case, it appears to me that apart from the hairstyles and outfits, they all look the same, guys and girls alike. Which isn't too bad until they suddenly stop wearing the clothes that make them recognisable!

Well I don't know about hideous. I think it's still beautiful, but I'm scared of those twig people the artist calls the Sailors. The anime art style always blows me away though.

I agree. :/ I'll always like the anime better, probably because I saw it before reading the manga.
And I used to love Naoko's art when I was in middle school, but looking at it now, I see so many little nitpicky things about it that bug me.....>

Same here OP. I love SM and even collect SM stuff, but have never read the whole manga. Not only because it's out of print and ridiculously expensive (although it is) - but because I can't stand to look at it. I even got a headache trying to read it once - it's very unclear where anyone is at anytime, it's all just comic tones so that Naoko never has to draw any BGS.
She has no idea how to draw fabric, and it's always scared me how their legs sort of disappear into their skirts and it looks like they don't have asses or crotches of anything. Just legs on a skirt, like a lollipop.

In my personal headcanon, there is no manga and no Sailor Stars. It's just a great, kistch-y anime that jumped the shark after the third season. It's a nice world.

Uh, okay, I was like, 11 years old, when I discovered the manga, so my reaction back then was all:
"OMG! So much prettier than the anime! The colors! Everything looks so fragile and girly and sparkling and soft and dreamy! I want to draw like that, too!"

It took me some while and the discovering of other manga to realize Miss Takeuchi's anatomy fail back then. And let's not even talk about how even the kids (like Chibi-Usa and Chibi Chibi) had quite some breasts for their age, duh...

...

To be quite honest, a huge, nostalgic part of me still prefers the art of the manga over the anime art. Mainly, because while some episodes of the anime lookes drop dead gorgeous and brilliant, some other episodes... didn't. Like, the style of their artists just wasn't (and still isn't) my cup of tea :/

I liked the manga because it spreads out the character screentime more. In the anime, Makoto(my favorite) gets less screentime than all the other characters, but in the manga she gets around the same.

Also, in the super s(or whatever it's called) arc, Chibiusa is a completely intolerable know-it-all in the anime, while in the manga she's more endearing.

So art aside, I still prefer the manga.

I think Naoko's art is gorgeous. The anime can't touch it most of the time. I don't care about the sameface, or the anatomy fail and other errors; it's part of the charm and package. I haven't found a mangaka since that can blow me away like she does. This also might have a lot to do with SM being my first. =P *shrugs* Just thought I'd say something different, lol.

When I was younger (I started with the anime) I was a bit shocked to see what was the original version of the really well animated anime.
But in the end, I got used to this style.
I'ts not my favourite manga style, but I think it's unique and has a typical old-school style.

I adore the manga's style and think the anime's art is rather shoddily drawn, to be honest. It makes sense, of course, seeing as it's 200 episodes and there was a need to recycle scenes and otherwise cut corners. But yeah, I find Naoko's style charming and unusual; it's not painfully generic.

As for the story, I thought the manga was a bit more mature and better paced plot-wise, whereas the anime really captured the characters' relationships with each other. PGSM, however, is my favorite incarnation for combining the best of the two.

Why do I feel like the only one that loves the manga art? You got to see Naoko transform throughout the series. The way she draws eyes is just gorgeous and her use of colors is brilliant. I would go on, but I'm on a iPad and typing on one sucks.

Personally, I prefer the manga to the anime, mainly because I find the manga prettier. Don't know, perhaps it's all this really long hair swishing over two pages or so. :D

But I do remember religiously watching every episode after school and I do have to say that the anime is really funny and I enjoyed it a lot.
