it's too bad that man!Shepard is probably the worse male character to play as for the single reason of having a terrible, god awful voice actor.

*It's too bad that fem!Shepard is probably the worst female character to play as for the single reason of having a terrible, god awful voice actress.

There, I fixed it. Get the fuck over yourselves. Hale is not the end all be all goddess of voice acting. Her voice for Shepard is terribly droning for some, but an angel for others. Same goes for man!Shep where some love it and others don't.

Either you like or you don't and there's the simple option of not playing one or the other gender. You don't have to be a bitch and ruin fandom for someone just because they like an aspect of the game you don't.

Really? You're going to be that voice actor preference bullshit into a secret like this? You people are pitiful

(Anonymous) 2011-03-20 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I know what you mean, OP. It's the same for me.

[identity profile] expiredramen.livejournal.com 2011-03-20 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I usually always play as a guy character. Not because I want to be a man though..

[identity profile] views.livejournal.com 2011-03-20 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
lol, me too. I just like the novelty of seeing and doing things from a man's point of view, even though it doesn't really matter whether your PC is male or female.

[identity profile] dethtoll.livejournal.com 2011-03-20 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I tend to play either-or. It just depends on the game, mostly. Like, I play a dude in Fallout 1 'cuz that's canon, but I play fems in all the other games.

Well, there's enough male protagonists in games for it to be more than satisfying for you. And you know that it is possible to actually become a man?

I'm a girl with some pretty male-stereotype behaviour patterns, so I tend to find it easier and a hell of a lot less irritating to play male characters.

But anyway, it shouldn't really be anyone else's problem why you play what you play. Tell them to mind their own business =3

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2011-03-20 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
People should either learn to respect your choices or fuck off.

I play as male and female characters all the time depending on what mood I'm in and I don't see how that has anything to do with how I feel about women, men, my gender or anything else. In any case, if you're trans, the fact that you like to play male characters certainly makes sense and again, people should learn to respect that.

[identity profile] sugarsurge.livejournal.com 2011-03-20 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Then those people need to knock it the hell off and stop criticizing you for a game choice. The fact that they assume you're sexist just because you'd rather play as the gender that you identify with is just so mindbogglingly stupid that I don't even-

I feel for you, OP.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-20 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
lol this is hilariously true. I've had a lot of people call me ungrateful srsly guys I'll play as a dude when I want to and I'll play as a girl when I want to.

[identity profile] judo-creature.livejournal.com 2011-03-20 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
OP, have you tried crossdressing? I don't know if you just dislike being female or if you're trans, but regardless of your gender identity, crossdressing is a completely viable option. It does take some work, especially if you're very prominently feminine, but regardless of how far you go to make it authentic, crossdressing is a non-permanent method of exploring your identity, and while I've found it helps to have a support system, you don't have to tell anyone about it.

But really, being genderqueer is nothing to be ashamed of, and it's incredibly unhealthy to suppress your gender identity to the point where you need fictional assistance just to deal with your current sex. I really, really hope you can become comfortable enough to tell people and maybe get help if you need it. Like I said, I don't know your exact position, but whatever your feelings, there are tons of resources online and IRL that can help you adjust to this; I could probably even dredge up some links, since I was doing a bunch of research on this just a short while ago.

Personally, I find author-avatar avatars boring as shit since they're so unimaginative and feel like they take away from the role-playing aspect. But I'm not going jump down someone's throat for it and tell them they're doing it wrong. You're friends are pretty dumb for assuming crap about it though. There's so many reasons one could have for how they customize them, it's ridiculous to assume that making a character match your physical sex makes you "okay!" and not sexist. Reading way too into it, especially if they're essentially blank slates.

[identity profile] seiberwing.livejournal.com 2011-03-20 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Ack. I can see that being awkward to talk about, especially if their assumptions about your preference are so...stupid.

[identity profile] havemy-heart.livejournal.com 2011-03-20 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad that you have an outlet for this, OP. I feel the same way, but I don't play video games so I have to find other ways to express myself. It's not easy at all *hugs*

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-03-20 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, if it's a good way of you dealing, good for you.

Part of what I like when playing as a guy (which is not always) is playing someone different, which to me is sort of the point! I like being drawn in into thinking , acting, being someone else.

For me, in r/l, if I had an option to switch around genders on regular basis, I would, but sadly in reality no such option exists...

[identity profile] mrtoulouse.livejournal.com 2011-03-21 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
I get where you're coming from. I mean, I don't play just male characters because I enjoy a certain amount of roleplaying, but when I do play a female one I'll often be jarred if an NPC uses gender-specific pronouns or honorifics because I tend to forget myself.

[identity profile] imouto.livejournal.com 2011-03-21 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
I'm still boggling over the fact that anyone would criticize someone for their video game choices. I seriously have no words for how straight up ridiculous that is. These are the kinds of things that are turning fandom into a no fun zone. When someone calls you sexist for something so inconsequential... People need to chill out and stop taking every little thing so damn seriously.

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2011-03-21 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
Wait, what? Who and where are these people? I play as a male avatar all the time and no one has ever given me grief about it.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-21 07:12 am (UTC)(link)
OP, you're my favourite secret-poster on the Citadel.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-21 04:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I do the same thing, OP. I play almost exclusively male characters because I am a male in a female body. I hope to one day make the transition, but I am a long way off. Working towards my goal, and with a boyfriend who is understanding and happy to remain with me (I identify as a gay man).

Good luck in your future, should you decide to transition, or remain as you are. There is no problem with either.

[identity profile] creeperx.livejournal.com 2011-03-22 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm a female and I ALWAYS play as males. Not because I would want to be a man though but because I just enjoy male characters more. Unlike some of my friends who play videogames, I never see myself as the gaming character. I roleplay instead and I find it more fun and liberating with a male character.

... and of course there's also the more shallow reason: I much rather watch a male character ;).
