I've heard that criticism before, and it's odd cause to me it seems to be the other way around. The empirical evidence was on the side of Pinkie's powers being real. Twilight was rejecting the evidence because it didn't fit her existing preconceptions about how magic works. In the end, she admitted she was wrong. So how is that pro-blind faith?

(Anonymous) 2011-05-10 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's what I thought too. Don't reject reality even when it doesn't fit your preconceived notions. For some reason I was reminded of theoretical physics and global warming.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-10 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
But the voiceover at the end was along the lines of "There are some things in the world we can't explain. Don't question it! Just take it on faith!" And... no.

this is a show about ponies who use magic and fly and have magical friendships and all that jazz

i think you are looking into it a little too hard

(Anonymous) 2011-05-10 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
This is a show directed at young children that purports to teach them morality. There is no such thing as "looking into it too hard."

This ep made me uncomfortable too, but it also had a killer Pokemon reference so all is forgiven.

[identity profile] corvigryph.livejournal.com 2011-05-10 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
REALLY? I missed the pokemon ref. I... missed the pokemon refrence. Holy crap.

Maybe I'm just weird and I misinterpreted the episode, but I thought, since Pinkie Pie's powers were actually real, that the message was more about not judging someone simply because their beliefs/ideas didn't fit in with your view of the world. At the end of the episode, Twilight Sparkle admitted she was wrong, but didn't suddenly become a believer of all things supernatural. She still had her faith in science and Pinkie's powers, since they were proven to be real and Twilight simply wouldn't believe in it because it couldn't be proven how Pinkie did what she did.

....damn, I need a pony icon.

I think the problem with that episode is that many people connect it with having faith in a religion or not being allowed to doubt.

To me the episode was about having faith in the abilities of your friends and to support them even though it might appear weird to you at first. Doesn't this make a little more sense in a show that is about friendship? I mean, the show IS called "friendship is magic" and not "blindly following norms/religions is magic" ;)

Just my two cents.

[identity profile] closetospring.livejournal.com 2011-05-10 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I've seen people say this but that's not really what happens imo. twilight tried and TRIED to find an explanation or method to it, and couldn't, and finally had to accept that it evidence still pointed to it being real despite lack of an understandable explanation. you don't always get an easy explanation in real life, either.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-10 05:28 pm (UTC)(link)
True, but that doesn't mean that it's bad to understand, or even that you should stop trying' Throwing our hands up and saying, 'Oh well, guess we just can't understand it!' is such a bad lesson to instill into kids. Yes, adults should take with grace what they can't necessarily explain, but they also shouldn't stop trying to learn about it.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-10 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. Like Twilight Sparkle was insane for trying to understand what was happening, like she was dumb for objecting to a new magic mechanic that didn't exist before and hasn't existed since... seriously rubbed me the wrong way, as a rationalist atheist skeptic. She wasn't 'not trusting her friend;' she was trying to understand the world.

I've found Pinkie gets a lot of leeway in the show in a way the other characters don't. Each of them has an episode where their approach to life fails-- Twilight had OP's cited episode, Rarity had her Icarus moment, Applejack had her 'stubborn Applejack is stubborn' episode, Fluttershy was taken advantage of by Philemina, Rainbow Dash is constantly failing due to excessive aggression-- but never Pinkie. I had hoped that 'Party of One' was going to be this (sometimes people don't fucking WANT to party! Sometimes they want to spend their time productively!) but no, it was ultimately a validation of Pinkie's worldview that everything need balloons. Even the Best Night Ever won Pinkie (and everyone else, but Pinkie most directly from what I saw) kudos from the authority figure for disrupting everyone's evening out.

So I have some significant issues with the show and that episode kind of distills them for me, yes.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-10 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Well, the show isn't over yet. Maybe there will be more morals for Pinkie in season 2.
Oh and as a non-atheist I agree with you ;)

to be honest, i felt that since twilight didn't believe in pinkie's "power", then she doubts where her own magic comes from (although it does sort of explain her confidence issues in a way).

honestly, i didn't think it's about "follow your with blind faith"; i think it's about, "trusting your friend's intuitions, even if they don't seem to make any sense."

i wouldn't say it's an allegory for religion but...

I'll be glad when Faust loses control and we get more PoC on the staff, the racism in the show is much too icky.

Welp Lauren Faust has said that she didn't mean for it to have anything to do with religion and deeply regrets writing that particular moral the way she did, if it's any consolation?

(Anonymous) 2011-05-10 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I was uncomfortable with that episode too. I'm find with Twilight Sparkle learning lessons about having more faith and her friends and learning to let go every once in a while, but at the end of the episode it was like she had been converted into the cult of the Pinkie pie and I just left the whole episode with a weird taste in my mouth.

I think it would have been better if Twilight didn't choose to believe Pinkie, but could still cherish her as a friend anyway. CHERISH THE DIFFERENCES IN OUR FRIENDS MORAL, IT WOULD WORK!

yeah things like this and the "OMG WHY IS KURT AN ATHEIST" episode of glee just make me really sad

i saw faust's apology but honestly i don't understand how she couldn't have been aware of the implications. the "LEAP OF FAITH" thing was fucking anvilicious. moar acceptance of atheist ideals in mainstream media plox?

[identity profile] mondaisenshi.livejournal.com 2011-05-10 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
And hundreds of years ago, people couldn't explain why planets doubled back on their orbit in the night sky. But they did. That's not the same as blind faith, that's accepting something as truth when it's been proven, even though you don't know WHY or HOW it happens. The sky is blue. What makes it blue? No idea! But that doesn't mean you can deny it being blue. It just means that you don't know the cause. Magnets attract. What causes it? Well, we can't quite figure it out, but we tried telling them it doesn't make sense and damned if they didn't just stick right back together again.

This isn't "this doesn't make sense and there's no reason to think it might be true, but let's just take someone's word for it," this is, "this doesn't make sense, but it's obviously true, so let's stop denying it based on our own lack of understanding." People have a tendency to dismiss things they don't understand as being the ravings of a lunatic. I think this episode's lesson is more, "Just because you can't see the wind doesn't mean your paper won't blow away in it" kind of thing.

I love these dead serious conversations about faith, the nature of reasonable evidence, and My Little Pony.
