IA with all of this. But you are probably going to get screamed at by these same people who think their right to publicly display their favorite sex fantasies trumps other peoples' right not to be horribly upset (because heaven knows that refraining from publicizing one's turnons, out of respect for others' feelings, is EXACTLY equivalent to going through all of whatever caused those other people to have bad associations with said turnon.)

If you don't like it, ignore it

[identity profile] hikari87.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
I do. I do not, however, relish the insanely whiny wank that inevitably occurs whenever anyone complains that someone else is judging their kink. I am not one of the people with the triggers or whatever, but I do think that there are better responses to someone's saying that a certain fic/kink/whatever bothers them for a certain reason than to get all bitchily defensive and snotty and dismiss their issues out of hand, which tends to be the usual response. If my right to get off to something controversial is supposed to be respected, then your right to not be traumatized by my loud publicization of said controversial thing should also be respected. There are generally no thoughtful discussions on this topic, merely people going "THIS TRIGGERED ME" and/or "STFU DON'T JUDGE ME".

[identity profile] humblebot.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
I love how you call anyone arguing against you 'whiny,' and miss how fucking whiny you sound yourself. BUT THINK OF THE CHILDREN.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-14 12:54 am (UTC)(link)

I love how you're proud of your insensitivity to others traumas and think others should be too lest they become a Simpsons parody character.

Pointing out whiny like it can't be ever true even with plenty comments glaring proof in face ain't truth either.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-14 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
no way to get through to her :/

[identity profile] hikari87.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Are you by any chance the same anon who kept going on, on totally random posts of mine, about what a massive privilege-denier I was? just wondering

[identity profile] humblebot.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
No one has "the right" to not be horribly upset, get over yourself. For one, what makes someone "horribly upset" depends on the person. I have a friend who gets upset over seeing a pairing she doesn't like in any context. Someone is going to be horribly upset at anything, it's not everyone's duty to never speak because they might horribly upset someone.

And yeah, some issues are touchier than others, but no one is going into their personal space and posting rape porn. If you're in a public area, anything goes. It's not hte same as being harassed on a personal journal or site (in which you could just ban them anyways, so that's a non-issue) Politeness is one thing, but you guys seem to want full out censorship with no one being able to talk about fetishes except in special fetish sites.

I hope you never talk about your sexuality in any way shape or form anywhere where I can see, I find it horribly offensive and upsetting.

[identity profile] hikari87.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
I am not saying that anyone has the right to not be upset. I am saying that if someone says "I am upset by this", there are much better ways to deal with that then to tell them to gdiaf for being judgmental, which is almost always the immediate response. Fandom is often in a public (well, internet public) space, and everyone is eventually going to come across something they don't like. This could be an opportunity for discussion, but it generally turns into a "let's shame the people who don't like our kink" fest. Saying "I understand you have issues, but I happen to enjoy this" should not be that hard.

[identity profile] alliterations.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
But the thing about saying "I'm upset about this" often turns messy, and I think that's a lot of the problem. Fandom is public, as you said, but going onto a kink meme, reading a labeled fic of X kink and saying "this disgusts me, how could you" is just...well, silly. No one is putting a gun to your head and forcing you to read kinks you don't like, and proclaiming "I DON'T LIKE THIS" to fics with warnings attached, or a discussion of a kink with warnings attached, is just as ridiculous as the people proclaiming "EVERYONE WHO HATES OUR KINK IS STUPID"

[identity profile] hikari87.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
It does get messy. Definitely not denying that there are jerks on the anti-whatever kind of kink side as well, I've seen them go off as well as the other kind. (Especially stupid are the ones who go where they KNOW they'll be triggered, then complain about it.) But the thing that annoys me is the idea that anyone who doesn't like a kink should not be allowed to express their thoughts on it (I think that's OP's deal here.) If I has a right to say "I get off on XXX", then you have an equal right to say "I find XXX really disturbing and I don't like it." A lot of people seem to feel that someone's saying "I hate this kink" is the same as saying "I hate you, you suck and are evil", which granted sometimes does seem to be the case but not always. It's like saying "I hate XXX manga" versus "I hate XXX manga's fans"; there's a difference there, but sometimes the fans don't differentiate. And a lot of people seem to believe that people who don't like certain kinks are not entitles to say anything about it at all, even though the kink-haters' opinions, thoughts and feelings are exactly as valid as the kink-defenders'.

[identity profile] alliterations.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, yes, we're in agreement then. That's my whole problem with kink shaming. It's fine if you say "I don't like X kink" but it's not fine to say "If you like X kink, you are a horrible, horrible person." And it's not fine to jump on the people who merely say the former.

I should add that if someone deliberately comments on a labeled fic or drawing and says "I don't like this" that's equally ridiculous because it was labeled and there is no reason to go out of your way to tell someone you don't like something. Saying it on your own personal journal or a discussion that asks for both sides? A-okay.

[identity profile] hikari87.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, there's a big difference between "I hate XXX" and "I hate all fans of XXX." People whose kinks are unpopular tend to confuse the two statements a lot. Granted you do get people sounding off with the latter, but even when they're saying the former it's often interpreted as the latter.
I never understood why someone would comment on anything just to say "this sucks." Why bother? If you don't like it, don't look at it! That's how I operate and it rarely backfires. I don't care who gets off on what lol. I just think that when I disapprove of something, I have exactly as much right to say so as the person who likes it has to say they like it.

Get off yourself.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-14 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
I guess people just don't know how to scroll past something, or how to not click on LJ cuts.

I have never seen a community or forum site where it wasn't a rule to put your fics under cut along with a summery. Same for art that is NWS. Also sites like Y-Gallery and FA have filters you can apply.

I don't understand why people feel the NEED to tell someone when they don't like something every-single-time.

It's like saying, "PAY ATTENTION TO MEEEE!"...it DOES get annoying, so it's no wonder the kink-writers/drawers get annoyed back at these people who have to inform them they don't-like-something.

Yeah, we know. You have to be either stupid or self-entitled not to know what humblebot said: That something is always going to upset someone.

Re: Get off yourself.

[identity profile] hikari87.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Speaking of scrolling past, you don't appear to have actually read most of what I've written here. I don't care who gets off on what. I do care that people are civil to each other, and that BOTH sides get to say what they think. I do not like it when either side is told to shut up as a knee-jerk reaction. I don't read what I don't like. I ignore it. I think that people who go looking at things they find disturbing and then complain about it are morons. I also think that if something is posted on a public forum, such as this one, both sides have an equal right to express their views on it, and NEITHER side has the right to be a jerk about it.

This. This this this.
Sorry that some people here are too unfair to actually read your comments :/

Re: Get off yourself.

[identity profile] hikari87.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 04:24 pm (UTC)(link)
well, there are some people on this comm who will get into any kind of argument and not bother to read what the other person is writing, just to argue a point that isn't even necessarily in the argument. I tend to attract this type because I'm often loud and obnoxious, but I'm never surprised by it since I see it all over the place.

[identity profile] hikari87.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Incidentally, the point of the secret, which you appear to have missed, is not that no one should have kinks, or share them with others of a like mind, but that people who have issues with said kinks should not be censored or told to stfu any more than the people with the kinks, since their views, feelings and opinions are equally valid with the others who like the kinks.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-14 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Of course the people who have issues should not be censored. But the point is that whatever issues they may have are fairly irrelevant because no one is forcing them to deal with other people's kinks. If you have issues with rape fic, don't read rape fic. Just ignore it when it pops up on comms. Don't go around telling people that you have issues with it. People are told to STFU about their issues because they have no reason to mention their issues in the first place. Somebody writes rape fic. You don't like rape fic. The smart thing is to go and ignore the rape fic, instead of starting to tell people why you have a problem with rape fic and then be outraged that people are annoyed by your whining.
(This is a very general, hypothetical 'you', I don't mean you personally, I have no idea what you have or do not have issues with. :))

[identity profile] hikari87.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
I just ignore what I have issues with. Most of my issues have nothing to do with sex, so it's easier to avoid them lol. But my point here is that if something is on a public forum, being discussed, like happens on this comm sometimes, the people who don't like whatever kink is being talked about should be allowed to talk about what they don't like and why, just as much as the people who do like the kink are allowed to talk about why they like it. Neither side should be allowed to shut the other up, nor should either side be allowed to be rude about it, because both sides have an equal right to their opinion and to express it.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-14 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
MTE
Also, I would think that people who get triggered by certain kinks, would want to stay far away from discussions about these things. When something makes me uncomfortable I don't feel the need to talk about again and again and again...
Especially since it's really not very likely that you're going to change someone's mind about their kinks. So I don't see the point in someone telling someone else that their kink is disgusting. This is not news. There are always going to be people who are repulsed by some kinks and there are going to be those who are turned on by them. That's life.
That doesn't mean you can't complain when someone is being an ass or isn't using warnings for their fics. You can't warn for everything but certain things like rape or pedophilia should have a warning. Unless, of course, you want people to think you're an asshole and complain to you. (I wouldn't be surprised.)
On the other hand people who whine about having triggers that absolutely no one could expect and therefore warn for are fucking ridiculous.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-14 06:08 am (UTC)(link)
Even if there's a warning, that doesn't stop people from being made aware that someone is getting off on the kind of trauma they've gone through and that someone thinks making their favorite characters suffer that way is sexy and interesting. It's a pretty horrifying realization.

Why have you ignored every response of hers that is actually reasonable? Are you incapable of having reasonable discussions with others? Is it boring for you if you can't find a good reason to insult someone?
