You do realise that just because consent isn't verbally stated doesn't mean that it isn't given. Even in real life, a lot is implied by how you react. So just because you don't say it out aloud, doesn't mean it's noncon or even dubcon...

[identity profile] ditdatdo.livejournal.com 2011-05-28 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
This. We don't all need to sign written agreements and shake hands before every sexual encounter!

[identity profile] tonko-ni.livejournal.com 2011-05-28 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
I see your point OP, but I swear to god, there's only so many times you can have some variation on "X wanted to be sure Y was TOTALLY OKAY WITH THIS IN EVERY WAY" every two seconds in a fic, or "'Are you sure?' 'Y-yes'" or whatever before it gets seriously repetitive.

Properly written, implied consent is just as clear and non-rape-y as explicit consent, and thank god for that.

The well-done versions of "are you sure/yes I'm sure" are lovely in their own right of course. Just--there's other ways to do it too.

This, so much. I think that anyone bypassing implied consent and stating it outright all the time is also passing on an opportunity to show part of the characters' relationship.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-28 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
This. Especially since, when it comes to the "Are you sure?"/"Yes" scenes, I'm always left with the impression that the one answering is some kind of blushing, virgin uke that needs to be pandered to. (Not always, granted, but SO OFTEN this is how it comes across.)

Generally, I preferred implied consent. The only exception is for fics where the relationship has been slow going and sex is a big step. Then it seems kind of sweet.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-28 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
This.

Maybe this is just me, but the majority of "are you sure you're ok with this"/"yes" fanfics come across as being written by someone who just came out of a sex-ed class who's teacher put heavy emphasis on consent. "Make sure you have your partner's consent. If you're unsure, ask them. Please ask them."

(Anonymous) 2011-05-28 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
I was really really really grossed out by a lot of shit in Big Bang Theory fandom because of this.

TBH I would get annoyed pretty quickly if I were with someone that always paused the action to ask detailed questions about my consent every time.

If I got asked every single time before I got kissed/had sex "Do you want to do this?" I would start getting pissed. Yes I know it's a dangerous line, but still, an enthusiastic action or response is implied consent in my book, and I'd much prefer it to spending time on non-dirty-talk words.

[identity profile] alliterations.livejournal.com 2011-05-28 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Well, you know, verbal consent like that can be hot. Every other two lines of someone going "are you SURE you're okay with this?" would be annoying, but the way it is presented in your example fic seems to be just for that "consent is sexy" aspect.

However, OP, as some people have stated, sometimes consent isn't verbal, so don't be too hasty to call your friends' fics non or dub con simply because it's not spoken aloud.

[identity profile] gereiheimer.livejournal.com 2011-05-28 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Not sure about the rest, but I do agree that full consent, verbally given or not, can be quite sexy indeed.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-28 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Don't write your friends fics off just yet, anon. Verbal consent can be nice, but as many people have said already, implied consent can go much farther, and can actually add more to a fic if done right.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-28 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
There is so much logic fail in this secret I don't even know where to start.

Surely this is a troll.

[identity profile] baxaronn.livejournal.com 2011-05-28 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
I'm flattered, OP! I really am.

But as others have said... implied consent exists. A lack of a conversation like this doesn't mean that things are skeevygross. D:

(Now, if you were more bothered by the other kinds of fics, where consent is actually lacking but it's written and responded to as cute and fluffy and totally okay - that, I understand. That is skeevygross. And I hope that's not what your friends write, because D: D: D: )

(Anonymous) 2011-05-28 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
oO Because when one partner doesn't constantly ask "is it okay if I kiss you now?" and "can I take off your shirt now?", then it's totally creepy rapefic. Because that's how consensual sex works, you need explicit permission for everything you do or else it's rape. Even if your partner obviously likes it and has no objections.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-28 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh. UGH. It makes me so twitchy when writers put literal buzzwords and phrases in their fic. Makes me feel like I'm reading a fucking essay.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-28 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
If the fic has you thinking about consent, that's a good thing. And in that instance, it looks very much like the character needs that verbal confirmation, because out of bed they wouldn't have a choice but to obey. And you're right, seeking consent can be sexy (especially if it's honestly seeking -- if the person being asked says "no" and gets listened to, I find it incredibly arousing, because I get turned on by being able to trust.)

That said, the negotiations don't always have to be made out loud to be valid. Look at the fics you're worried about and see if what's skeeving you is someone being pushed well past their comfort zone and then the writer assuming that they're going to lie there and like it. If that element isn't there -- if both parties are clearly having a good time and there's give and take -- then the verbal part isn't as important.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2011-05-28 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
Reminds me of this:

[identity profile] agnes-bean.livejournal.com 2011-05-28 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
While I'm all for consent (and, actually, all for dub-con in a sexy way, but only when it's on purpose), I agree with people above: Verbal consent can certainly be sexy if not overused, but implied consent is fine with me, too. A lot of it depends on the characters, also. Some characters just wouldn't be asking verbally all the time, IMO.

[identity profile] miakun.livejournal.com 2011-05-28 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
I know what you're saying. Consent is sexy. What's more sexy than knowing for sure that the person you're with actually wants to be there. I think people are really over-exaggerating in their comments in this thread about thinking it would be repetitive or annoying if it showed up in fic all the time -- like it would be: "Can I kiss you? Can I move my hand on your shoulder?" or something. It doesn't even sound that way in the excerpt.

So yeah, OP. I get what you're saying!

I'm going to fly in the opposite direction and go "I like to read verbally given consent!"

But that is me. I need it given to me because IRL I am constantly anxious about being pushy so I really, really wanna make sure the person wants it because I will be so fucking amazed that they want me.

Also, timid.

So I would love to read a fanfic that portrays that realistically, but not stunted, because personally I would find it so hot to have that level of connection with a fic.

(Anyone? HP fandom with Snape is good, I totally identify with the snarky shit)

[identity profile] les-lenne.livejournal.com 2011-05-28 07:48 am (UTC)(link)
To be quite honest, fic that stresses the fact this much manages to skeeve me out more than any rape fic, especially thanks to the POV chosen by the author. Makes me want to say, "No, actually I have not given my consent, and I would kick a person out of my bed who constantly asked that. Or just throw them on their back and fuck the shit out of them because they're such a nervous little thing and I don't want to wait."

Might have worked with a different POV, but like this? No, thanks, "YOU'RE NOT ME!!" /boss battle
