I wouldn't care for the gender identity of a person I hated. That's probably why. Other people have called OP a transphobic asshole, but that's really nothing in this one instance when we're talking about a manipulative, unstable asshole.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-16 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
same anon

Also adding to the fact that OP doesn't seem convinced about them actually being trans ("... because female authors don't get the same amount of respect as their male counterparts") She may just be getting the surgery because she wants to be more respected as a male. It's complicated with that kind of backstory in the equation.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-16 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
do you have any idea how long and complicated the process to getting the surgery is? you don't walk into the clinic and just ask for it, you have to go for assessments.

besides, with the way op was phrasing things, i wouldn't be surprised if their friend lied about why they were identifying as male online so they could avoid op's transphobic reactions.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-16 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
I realize this. But I also feel that there could be more to it, because there have been people who have gotten SRS and either regretted it or got it for the wrong reasons. It's not like every single case of the surgery is 100% success everyone loves it.

OP would probably be far more accepting if said friend hadn't subjected her to suspensions based on lies. Based on the personality presented here, her friend sounds more like a manipulative asshole than someone who was afraid of a friend's reaction to being trans.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-16 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
that's true, but what's so hard about supporting someone with who they feel they are right now? oh wait, that would be... nothing! if the friend is transitioning to male, use male pronouns, don't be all 'ohhh, well you're kind of an asshole and some people transition and regret it so i'll still use female pronouns for now and not believe you, hope you don't mind.' because that's bullshit.

again, the friend in question may very well be an asshole. and OP has every right to treat him as an asshole, and not be his friend, but they can at the very least do it without being transphobic about it.

Just interjecting randomly, but I know a couple people from fandom/irl that got sex changes because they thought it was cool and that they could be "OMG JUST LIKE IN THE YAOIS". I'm not even fucking joking right now, but I sure wish I was.
They still identify as female and admit that they never once felt like a boy or that they were in the wrong body. They just did it for fandom purposes and "omg so edgy and yaoi".

I think it bothers me the most because I'm not cis. Like at all. And they were cis (but now they aren't (?))

[identity profile] danaphilip.livejournal.com 2011-06-16 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. fandom ruins a lot of things by making it seem "edge-y" and cool.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-16 09:12 am (UTC)(link)
That's...really scary, actually. I couldn't imagine undergoing any sort of surgery for fandom reasons. :-/

There is a man in my town who apparently underwent reassignment surgery because he wanted to be more like Barbie. The scary thing is, he was mentally handicapped before the surgery, yet somehow a doctor still thought he was worth operating on. Sadly, due to his handicap, the surgery went wrong and the man had to be put in a nursing home, stuck in between transitioning. It's so sad.

A person's body is their own fucking business, and they can do whatever the fuck they want with it, for whatever reason they want, I don't care if that reason is so they can look more like goddamn Pikachu - THEIR BODY, THEIR BUSINESS.

I wouldn't care for the gender identity of a person I hated. That's probably why.

wow, what the fuck? so would you have no issue with calling someone a racial slur because you hated them? or a homophobic slur because you hated them?

take issue with a person for their actions, not their identity. jfc.

[identity profile] wldcatsprstr-14.livejournal.com 2011-06-16 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
Not saying that use of slurs is OK, but hate of someone is generally the reason someone even uses a slur in the first place.

[identity profile] dweo.livejournal.com 2011-06-16 09:14 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I was just wondering that. If you hate somebody enough to post a secret like this about them, wouldn't you want to use the slur that would hurt them the most?

[identity profile] joereaves.livejournal.com 2011-06-16 01:21 pm (UTC)(link)
While I agree that people do use slurs like that purely to hurt people and I have been guilty of that when I've really lost my temper too, when you use a racial slur against someone you hate you imply that their race has something to do with them being hateful, rather than just the fact they're a jackass. Similarly with homophobic slurs. They reflect on you more than the person you're hurling them at.

pffft because the feeings of the people i hate are so important.

i wouldn't ever call somebody a slur out loud. but fuck if it wouldn't make me think them every time i see that person.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-16 12:17 pm (UTC)(link)
What about the feelings of people you don't hate? There's nothing wrong with wanting to insult someone who's hurt you, but slurs don't just affect that one person.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-16 02:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, you're not racist/homophobic/transphobic at all. You believe in freedom for all people - it should just come in the form of a light switch.

[identity profile] silver-coins.livejournal.com 2011-06-16 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, and it would be totally okay for me to call a black friend racial slurs because she's an asshole, right? Or call gay people disgusting fags when they're assholes. The OP sounds like just as big of an asshole as the guy she's reffering to, imo.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-16 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
:\

Just passing through this thread but I gotta say it kind of bothers me you default to "racial slurs" but you're perfectly okay with saying "fags". Alrighty. Moving right along out of here...

[identity profile] silver-coins.livejournal.com 2011-06-16 02:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm comfortable using fags because I am one and it's a slur used towards me. I'm not black so I prefer not to use racial slurs if I can.

Seriously, though, that is such a weird thing to take offense over...

[identity profile] hoggle2807.livejournal.com 2011-06-16 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
ffs, get some perspective. In this context it's not a slur, just inaccurate.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-16 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
did you just tell a transperson to get some perspective on transphobia?

ohhhhhhhh, honey.

[identity profile] hoggle2807.livejournal.com 2011-06-16 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry, did I miss the giant sign in your icon that said "Hey, everybody! I'm trans!"? This is the Internet, honey. If you're going to act like a person who has no perspective, don't be surprised when people say so.

[identity profile] hoggle2807.livejournal.com 2011-06-16 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry. Clearly, I didn't pay enough attention, and thought I was responding to silver coins. But the point still stands.

I'd prefer a slur anyday over someone purposfully misgendering me. Imo doind that on purpose is as bad as a slur.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-16 02:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, you're right. Transgender people deserve the same rights as everybody else, as long as they're nice to you. Because you would totally go around calling a cisgender man "she" all of a sudden because he was mean to you, I'm sure you do that all the time.
