Question that is a little bit off topic from the Secret:

Can someone explain to me the difference between bi and pansexual because I was under the impression they were the same thing?

(Anonymous) 2011-06-16 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
as far as i understand it, bisexuals are attracted to men and women. pansexuals experience their attraction in a different way, and feel more attracted to people as individuals rather than general attraction to men and women. there's also the fact that the term bisexual implies a gender binary and erases non-binary identified people. if a person does find themselves attracted individuals all across the gender spectrum, they may find pansexual is a better word to use to describe themselves.

[identity profile] icarian-ink.livejournal.com 2011-06-16 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
*bisexual CAN erase non-binary identified people (doesn't always) - but pan explicitly includes all.

[identity profile] kelly-h80.livejournal.com 2011-06-16 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for this.

Good to know that there is a difference.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-16 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
A bisexual person is attracted to both genders. Gender and sexual orientation does matter, though some people will argue that it doesn't. That's the simple explanation.... To a pansexual person, apparently, it does not. They're attracted to gay, straight, male, female, transexual, transvestite, etc. The labels don't matter.

Thanks for answering!

As a I bisexual person*, I'd still count transsexual (and transgender) people under "two genders", since they are typically male or female, no matter what their chromosomes are.

*Granted, I only ID as that because it's easier than explaining all the quirks of my sexuality, which is somewhere between bi and pan.

Oh my god it's so good to hear this from outside my own brain.
I am not entirely sure (especially since the exact details of the definition can vary based on source), but it's probably most accurate to say I'm pansexual. But because pansexual is a lesser-known term it's easier to say bisexual and, to me, the distinction isn't that important. Not irrelevant (and I understand those who dislike "bisexual" because it reinforces the gender binary) but I don't consider myself mislabeled if somebody calls me bisexual the way I would consider myself mislabeled if somebody calls me a lesbian.

In the case of Captain Jack I always thought it was a reference to him going for other species as well. Dunno if this applies to any other characters..?

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-06-16 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
I understand that pansexual is more often used by people who see gender more as a continuum, and not a male/female division, and they re also attracted to people who do not fall into strict male/female categories. But in practice it sometimes makes little difference, and people with identical attraction patterns could identify as either bi or pan.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-16 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
Bisexual is all about the number two--two sexes, male and female. Pansexual is for people who avoid the binary way of classification, and are attracted to many gender identifiers. In the event Earth was suddenly invaded by aliens, pansexual people--with their open definition--could be attracted to them, and bisexual people (by definition) would not be unless we were to define something like bi-xeno-sexual or something. XD

Eh, I'm pan and I disagree with the alien bit. Aliens aren't a gender identity, after all.

[identity profile] 51stcenturyfox.livejournal.com 2011-06-16 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
I'm in a fandom that has a person who's attracted to aliens of any gender as well as people, and "omnisexual" is most-commonly used to describe his orientation. (Actually, there's a friend of his who also thinks poodles are attractive, but they're alien to him since he's not from earth, apparently...)

But again, sci-fi, so.

None of my fandoms focus much on non-humans, but I have definitely seen omnisexual used in that way. Seems appropriate to me!

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-06-16 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm, but see, I think that only works if genderedness is involved, and not so much the alien stuff. I could totally fancy non-human males and still see no problem with a simple "straight" identification...

[identity profile] 51stcenturyfox.livejournal.com 2011-06-16 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's kind of moot unless aliens and human beings ever make contact.

But in the context of fandom, we often see alien characters that fit binary gender models like Worf or Spock or Gaila, instead of aliens that are one gender or all genders or who don't have any gender system. It's harder to imagine being attracted to Grays or Tribbles. But I suppose it could happen!

(Anonymous) 2011-06-16 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
Wikipedia to the rescue.

Pansexuality (also referred to as omnisexuality or polisexuality) refers to the potential for sexual attractions, sexual desire, or romantic love, towards people of all gender identities and biological sexes.

Seems to include aliens to me, but hey--it's your sexuality. :)

[personal profile] ouo 2011-06-16 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, all gender identities and biological sexes. Aliens are neither a gender identity nor a biological sex, they are another species.

Now, I do agree that if a pansexual individual was into aliens then they would be potentially into aliens of all genders and sexes. And I'm sure some pan people are in fact into non-humans! But not all of us; it's nowhere in that or any other definition.

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2011-06-16 06:50 am (UTC)(link)
Seconded. I consider attraction to aliens to be more of a fetish than a sexual orientation, because as far as we know they are fictional. If they ever move out of the fictional-only realm, I will happily change my opinions to reflect that.

bi = two
pan = all

Bisexual people are attracted to two genders (generally men and women).
Panseuxal people are attracted to all genders (men, women, non-binary, etc.)

A lot of the confusion comes from the fact that pansexual is a newer term than bisexual, and still isn't as widely known (and as you demonstrated, some people simply don't realize that there's a difference at all). Many individuals who fit into the definition of pansexual still call themselves bi for a variety of possible reasons -- not wanting to change after years of identifying as bi, preferring to use a more understandable word, and so on.

Pretty much this. I use pan most of the time because I feel the word better suits me (as much as anything does), but there's some circles I just use bi because I don't have the spoons to deal with explaining what pan is yet again.

I always thought poly was "able to be in a romantic/sexual relationship with more than one person at a time".

[identity profile] bramble-patch.livejournal.com 2011-06-18 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Polyamorous = open to having or preferring to have multiple sexual or romantic partners.

Polysexual = attracted to multiple genders and sexes

However, I do have to say that I have never encountered the word polysexual in anything other than a theoretical discussion; there don't seem to be many people who actually identify as such rather than bi or pan. I suspect this is probably because in a lot of people's minds, "poly" already refers to polyamory.

[identity profile] emerald1972.livejournal.com 2011-06-16 02:02 pm (UTC)(link)
When I first came out, almost 20 years ago, there was only one term, Bisexual. That encompassed attraction to people who identified as part of the gender binary (ie male/female) and those who identified outside of it. (Genderqueer, Intersexed, etc). Back then, and still to this day, my bisexual identity has always meant 'attracted to the person first and foremost, gender is irrelevant'. So it's a little simplistic to say 'Bisexual = only attracted to the gender binary'.

Basically the term 'Bisexual' can mean attraction limited to within the gender binary, but you shouldn't assume that's the case with all Bisexuals. Some of us do you use the term 'Bisexual' to encompass more of a 'Love the person, not the gender' attitude. If a person identifies as 'Pansexual', then the correct assumption would be that they are most definitely acknowledging attractions both within, and outside of the gender binary.
