I never want any of my pairings to become canon, regardless of them being m/m, f/f, or m/f. Mostly because 90% of a time, once a pairing becomes canon, I end up absolutely hating the way its handled.

Wanting a homosexual hero=/=Wanting every m/m pairing you like to end up canon.

I agree with this. Some of the people saying their slash OTP should become canon because there should be more representation of m/m couples (I never really see femmeslashers do this, tbh) seem more like they just want to see their pairing be canon. I can see some of what they are saying, and it bothers me when two people of the same gender act in a flirtatious way and then go "no homo" as well, but I think sometimes their anger over it comes off more as wanting a pairing to be canon than dealing with an issue related to queerness in the media.

[identity profile] blackjackrocket.livejournal.com 2011-06-16 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Whenever people tell me that "it won't happen", I point out that it's only within my lifetime that mixed-race couples started showing up on TV.

Kids these days have no idea how controversial Lenora/Hawes would have been when I was their age, and how important it is that it's so UNimportant nowaways (fandom is Pokémon).

Someone has to be the first. Heck, there's already been canon gay ships on kids shows. Just because they haven't said so on the show doesn't mean the creators haven't weighed in. Someday soon, someone will finally say so on the shows themselves.

And someday after that, no one will care any more because it will finally be accepted as just another ship.

[identity profile] tomboyishcandy.livejournal.com 2011-06-16 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Eeeee, Aloe and Kidachi! ♥

I love those two.

/that's all I have to add. ^^;

Hmm, how about Braceface? It's Canadian (I think), but it's a cute kid's cartoon and Dion (Mark Jones) was gay, if memory serves. The main character even tries to find him a boyfriend after she crushes on him before finding out he was gay. xD;;

Japanese kids' shows also tend to have homosexual characters or relationships, but not always portrayed in an ideal way.

[identity profile] wldcatsprstr-14.livejournal.com 2011-06-16 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
I don't want any of my slash pairings to become canon because judging by the way they write canon romantic couples, I know the writers would ruin my pairing horribly. Until there's someone around who can actually do it properly, I'll keep my subtext.

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-06-16 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
No, not at all. But it depends on context. If the characters are established as straight, I don't expect them to suddenly go gay. I realize that does does happen, and that some people come out of the closet late, but there has to be some level of believability to it (and if the character was written straight before, you can usually tell. So I'd just like more shows that has established, canon gay characters from the beginning than to have "slash" pairing come true on screen unless it's really well-written.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-16 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with you 98%, but I think we should also talk about how popular slash pairings seem to be composed of characters who wouldn't be in a relationship even if by some miracle the main character was gay. One gay main character, fine--but if you think an action movie/sci fi movie/fantasy movie meant to appeal to wider audiences will have a gay main couple in this day and age, you're crazy. :\

(And we should also talk about how--with rare exceptions--canon gay couples don't get as much attention as slash pairings composed of at least one "straight" person.)

[identity profile] cherrycoloured.livejournal.com 2011-06-16 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
That doesn't mean it shouldn't. I don't think it should have to be the two characters people are pairing up, but it'd be great if there was a gay character in canon, for a partner to be introduced for them, like how Blaine was created to date Kurt in Glee. It's unlikely, but I'd like to see it happen more often.

Regarding your second point, that's because most media is filled with characters who are either straight, or who don't seem to show any sexuality while not being overtly asexual (since most people assume characters like that are straight). There aren't a lot of canon gay couples, though some of the ones that are out there, like Jack/Ianto, Brian/Justin, or Blaine/Kurt, have very loyal and large fanbases.

I have to confess, I would kill for a story about two equal cop partners who were of the same gender falling in love ala ever single cop partner duo in fandom ever, both m/m and f/f. I mean, it shows up in m/f cop partners all the time. I demand this at least once, Hollywood. Come on, at least give me a weird indie action movie.

Maybe I don't watch enough TV, but I can't think of a single case where a popular slash pairing became canon. Normally a new (gay) character is introduced and then paired with a character. Even in the case of Jack/Ianto I doubt anyone really shipped that before it became canon...

[identity profile] tonko-ni.livejournal.com 2011-06-16 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
I would love for any pairing I found enough basis to build slashiness on to become canon, but I do think it's delusional to expect established characters on current television to suddenly be changed by their showrunners to accommodate that, certainly not on mainstream TV. Greg and Nick on CSI: Original Flavour, for example? I'd love that to be canon. Not happening, despite my sincerest wishes that it would.

But this has to do with how I understand the industry to work, not because I wouldn't love me some "for real" gay or lesbian or bi or whatever heroes, in more than just Torchwood. BRING ON THE VARIED SEXUALITY, I SAY.

I don't like the "delusional" comments either. It makes me wonder what secret delusions they harbor in their fandoms. Because really, if you think at all, you're going to speculate and imagine what you'd do instead.

If you think at all...

(Anonymous) 2011-06-16 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
It does royally suck that an established character has a better chance of being canon hooked up with an opposite sex character after having only been seen standing in the same room together than they would being canon hooked up with someone of the same sex they had lots of face and character time with.

But.

I'd rather have openly queer characters, period. As in, no guessing games when they might have had chemistry with other characters. Just say it: gay/bi/pan/trans? That can be a tricky thing to express when relationships aren't going on, but a mention of past girlfriends or a comment on a hot dude actor might be all that it takes to erase the assumption that a particular cast member is default straight.

Anyhoo, you're not delusional. Remus/Sirius didn't happen, but (at least one-sided) Dumbledore/Grindelwald did! Both had slashers before proven or disproven, people saying it could/couldn't be canon, and people saying it couldn't happen in a kid's series.

Well, there's a difference between wanting/believing in a pairing and just demanding that TV writers pander to your whims, whether it's logical in-story or not. In some cases, it makes genuine sense for a slash pairing to become canon. In other cases it doesn't. So as long as you care about serving the story first, then I don't see why you can't "take it seriously." (And then there's the whole RPS angle, which can get...intense. Item: the Jesse/Andrew stans on Tumblr. Good LORD.)

[identity profile] yucari.livejournal.com 2011-06-16 07:23 am (UTC)(link)
It's not delusional to want these things.

It IS delusional to think that media producers, largely hetero males writing for other hetero males with maybe a few nods to hetero girls thrown in, are tolerant enough/give enough of a fuck about them to make them so.

Sorry. :\

(Anonymous) 2011-06-16 03:08 pm (UTC)(link)
This is meshing together two different things: The lack of homosexual main characters with the changing of already established sexuality of the characters. Not the same thing.

So no, you aren't delusional because you want homosexual protagonists, you are delusional because you think that a non-romance based series are going out of its way to appeal to a rather small online fan community.

And don't paint yourself as some kind of hero here, Slash fans are about as helpful for gay acceptance as straight guys who find lesbians hot. Fetishizing people is not actual support.
