This is why I'm glad they're fucking finally putting same-sex romance in the third game. Liara, the bi alien love interest, is a character I quite like. I thought her romance was sweet, but not perfect. However, it felt more of an issue of "we've had no interaction, why are you suddenly in love with me?" than a fan-service problem.

Of course, I've got a marked blind spot for fan-servicey things, so I may just not have noticed. Though I really, really hate the f/f romance with Kelly in ME2

[identity profile] dgcatanisiri.livejournal.com 2011-07-30 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I have the same problem with Liara's romance. Kaidan and Ashley, you interact with and learn about. Liara, by the second conversation, it's romance her or never speak with her again. You don't get to know about her unless you're looking to sleep with her.

Discussion in ME1 with Liara is so irritating :| I flat out told her I wasn't interested in her and continued to talk with her thinking it would be alright and I still got the double-timin' confrontation scene. WTF.

What gets me is that they've been teasing us with same-sex romances since day one, right down to having the voices recorded for it...and then it gets jerked away from us. Both times.

[identity profile] dethtoll.livejournal.com 2011-07-30 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
so go play fallout 2, straight sex, gay sex it's all in there

oh wait you won't

[identity profile] lashiec.livejournal.com 2011-07-31 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
And this makes me weep.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-31 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
wut?

[identity profile] cephiedvariable.livejournal.com 2011-07-31 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Are you implying that Fallout 2 is somehow an obscure game that people have unjustly overlooked and will never give a second glance or something???

Fallout 2???

No, sadly, they won't.

[identity profile] lolofielding.livejournal.com 2011-07-31 10:27 am (UTC)(link)
I just got Fallout 3 - can you have gay relationships (male or female) in that too?

I wouldn't say the Liara romance (F/F, well, technically F/monogendered) was fanservice. I think the romance choices for the first game made sense.

The second game, though? Romance options coming out of every corner of the Normandy, but no homosexual options? That was just a bad idea all round.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-30 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
It's ok they're going all out with the next game..

Though I never romanced anyone in the game when I was playing a M!shep only because I can't have Garrus. My F!shep loves everyone though

(Anonymous) 2011-07-30 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
tbh, yeah they probably left it out because of the whole "straight" fanboy thing but I still wasn't satisfied with the only f/f pairing in there.

[identity profile] blackjackrocket.livejournal.com 2011-08-02 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Bah, straight fanboys wouldn't care. Only bigoted ones. And we shouldn't be pandering to bigots.

[identity profile] antiva.livejournal.com 2011-07-30 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
afaik most people said the Liara/femShep thing wasn't even a real lesbian ship (can't remember if this came from the creators or the fans) because asari are not real... women idek. eah ME has always been pretty fail as far as same sex couples were concerned. I mean in ME2 Kelly doesn't really count as a real!romance because WHO KNOWS and just seems to be there for fanservice really? I mean I liked Kelly but there was not much real development there other than feeding your damn fish

I've been content to just put up my blinkers really hard at those issues but I'm glad ME3 will get something. I hope it will be unproblematic and just handled normally, but honestly who knows at this point 8(

[identity profile] miakun.livejournal.com 2011-07-31 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, I forgot about Kelly.

I have so many issues with ME2.

[identity profile] green-glee.livejournal.com 2011-07-30 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Bioware made Dragon Age tho. They don't ignore male gay sex completely.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-30 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
They're made by different teams.

If you come off like a stupid yaoi fangirl, and the FemShep/Liara people DON'T come off as mouthbreathing frat boys, it's because of a double standard that will only be broken when people crusade for equal options.

FemShep/Liara IS hawt lesbianz for men. People can play the monogender card all they want, but asari are not real aliens. They were written, designed, modeled and developed based on the desires of a narrow target audience. They are not an honest attempt at exploring genderqueerness. We deserve better.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-30 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought their relationship, especially in LSB, was well done. I agree, the Asari hemselves are basically taking a giant dump on genderqueer, but the Liara/Shep relationship itself is pretty free of hawt lezbian tropes. I like it.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-30 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I will never understand why gender would matter in an alien/human romance. Like, why would an alien dude care whether or not the human was a dude. Both male and female humans would look equally strange. Same thing with a human toward an alien male. Why would it matte?

...And this is just one of the reasons why I hate that MShep/Garrus isn't an option. It just makes no sense!

there WAS a male gaymance option..

[identity profile] paopaotang.livejournal.com 2011-07-30 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
It mysteriously disappeared when the game was actually released. It could have been media pressure (Fox News did a story specifically on ME and how 'corrupting' it was before it came out) or something from within Bioware at the last minute. IDK.

It was originally intended that the character could romance anyone (kaidan/m!shep or ashley/f!shep) in the first game. If you screw with the gender flags you can still go through with the romance because all the gay romance dialogue was kept in the game. Check it out (http://youtu.be/lPMOlEfhWGE). My f!Shep/Ashley game carried over into ME2 without any real problems. The reunion scene had the past relationship hug and the picture in the cabin was her. So if you really want to gaymance the first game, you can. And Bioware is including actual working m/m relationships in ME3, which is great.

Is there any confirmation on who you can gay romance on ME3?

I badly want Garrus.

As a person who plays and analyzes the female/female relationships in Bioware games I will say that Liara is probably one of their best so far (although I will always love Silk Fox the most) not that it doesn't have it's own issues (I prefer the Ashley and Kaiden romances, they fall into less tropes). It's still sort of irritating that I can't romance Miranda (I can never gay romance the ones I want, Bastila, Dawn Star, Miranda, Morrigan, ahh damn you Bioware! Give me a stupid best friend romance already!) and the Jack romance is stupid, but Liara is pretty great.
