Hm, I still like her and I hope that doesn't change soon, because she's the only character that I reaaaally care on Moffat Era :\

(Anonymous) 2011-07-30 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
It's hard to get invested in a character when her first appearance has her dying. And when you know the writer is most likely going to pull some time-loop device out of his ass and save her because everybody lives!

(Anonymous) 2011-07-30 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
oh gosh, how I hated her death. I mean, not death itself (though it sucked, etc, she looked a cool character even back then), but that virtual world and her virtual children... Everytime someone says how Moffat is a ~~genius~~, I think of it and start to laugh.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-30 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
And to make it better they're all 'But it's a virtual library! She doesn't HAVE to stay a mother!' And I'm all... but that's obviously what CAL thought would make her happiest. So w/e.

Everytime someone says how Moffat is a ~~genius~~, I think of it and start to laugh.

Me too. He's not nearly as clever as half the fandom claims he is. No writer is, tbh.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-30 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
To be fair I never really cared for her to begin with, but this entire season seems to be built upon the ~*~epic mystery~*~ of who she really is, and honestly it's not half as impressive and mindboggling as Moffat seems to think it is. I mean, sure, the explanation is wibbly wobbley, but I could see it coming a mile off. The whole buildup just seems unnecessary.

[identity profile] fenm.livejournal.com 2011-07-30 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I think a lot of people guessed who she was by the end of the first episode this season, at least. Hell, it seemed SO obvious, I thought for sure we'd find out it was something else, cuz... well, it seemed kinda lame to give so much build-up to something so obvious.

I could only just tolerate her in The Library.

Every subsequent appearance just grates on me. She's smug and annoying, and it feels like Doctor Who is turning into the River Song show, starring The Doctor.

I wish they'd give River her own show so she doesn't stand there and smugly outshine the rest of the characters :/

[identity profile] classic-mold137.livejournal.com 2011-07-30 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually like River, but I agree that Moffat has made her too central.

[identity profile] classic-mold137.livejournal.com 2011-07-30 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I mostly agree with this, though I still think I like her, I just don't like where the story is going now.

[identity profile] antiva.livejournal.com 2011-07-30 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
The thing with River is that I think I like her as a character (every time she flirts with the Doctor and is generally awesome and sort of sneaky and badass) but Moffat just doesn't let her be herself much, but merely a plot device...? We keep being told that she's awesome (lol Daleks fear her, that was a tad over the top there Moffat) and mysterious and SPOILERS and then we find out that she's and she's trapped into some sort of doomed/fated/manipulated through backwards time in quite a creepy way(???) to be the Doctor's lover/one of his great loves and... it just drowns her character, idk. Moffat is way too up her ass as a fascinating plot device/badass Mary Sue that we don't really see much of River herself, in my opinion.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-30 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I want to frame this comment.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-30 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
This. If he had simply let her be a future love interest who's meeting him out of order, that would have been plenty. But Moffat decided it was more important to layer on plot contrivances than characterization and she went from somebody I thought was interesting to somebody who makes me roll my eyes.

Problem is, Moffatt treats every character as a plot device. He can tell a good story (though the verdict is reserved on S6 until the finale), but he is more than willing to warp his (and others') characters to fit his -oh-so-cleverly-designed plot. It makes a pretty jigsaw, but the story can end up lacking heart.

Amy's suffering the same fate, and Rory as well, though to a lesser extent. The episodes where Amy's felt most real to me were actually Vincent and the Doctor and, strangely enough, The Doctor's Wife, even though she had a very supporting role there.

It might be interesting if we could get a River episode written by a (good) writer other than Moffatt.

I fucking hate her so much. She's incredibly annoying and I can't stand all the ~mysteries~ around her. Why should I care for her if I don't know who she even is? (and whose child she is was the squickiest revelation ever)

It drives me crazy that her fans consider you an anti-feminist if you don't love her.

[identity profile] fenm.livejournal.com 2011-07-30 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
(and whose child she is was the squickiest revelation ever)

Would you care to elaborate on that? I'm not sure why it wold be squicky, per se...

Whaaaaat?!

The reveal of her being Amy and Rory's child, and having undergone all that hardship and loss as the baddies stole her, tried to turn her into a killing machine(?,) and then left her with spooky aliens, just makes her all the more interesting. And part-Time Lady too - now the Doctor has an honest-to-god REASON to care as much about her as she suggests he does in the future!

Do you just not like Amy and Rory or something? The fact River is their daughter just retroactively makes all of their interactions sweeter, imo...

[identity profile] ryttu3k.livejournal.com 2011-07-30 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah - I love the comment after she takes out the Silents about... "My old man would so disapprove" or something. Pan to Rory watching from the TARDIS. Or the heart-to-heart they have in the tunnels.

It does somewhat ruin my River/Amy ship, though. Cough.

[identity profile] fenm.livejournal.com 2011-07-30 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
And part-Time Lady too

Ugh. That was JUST STUPID. Seriously... being conceived in a TARDIS can make you a Time Lord? Hell, since they opened that door, they ought to run with it: Have the Doctor invite a bunch of married couples in to the TARDIS. lather rinse, repeat... He'll be able to populate New Gallifrey in a matter of years!

I just find it ironic that Moffat hated Rose so much because she was RTD's precious "mary-sue", and then he comes out with the River Song worship. It feels like the show is more about her than the Doctor now.

In any case, I agree. I loved her character at first but finding out her "identity" just made her irritating to me. It's a shame.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-31 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
Rose fan here, but I don't know that Moffatt hated her character so much as just felt sort of blase about her. Which, fair enough, there isn't really a rational reason I prefer Rose to a bunch of other characters, so I can't blame others for responding differently (still don't think that's an excuse to have the Doctor treat her in such an OOC manner in GitF given the rest of his canonical S2 characterization, however).

But, I agree, River's been oversold since her first appearance, and I rather like her, or at least feel really sorry for her. I refuse to use the term Mary Sue for a canon character--especially in this fandom--but sometimes I think River seems more like Moffatt's ideal woman than an actual person. It's gotten to the point where I just wish he'd bring Romana back if he wanted that sort of one-upping dynamic, where we'd get an awesome female character without the skeevy subtext.

I liked her in the beginning, still like her now.

Amy and Rory's child, awesome.
Has Timelord DNA, uhh... why?

[identity profile] starsimpulse.livejournal.com 2011-07-31 08:23 am (UTC)(link)
this. she used to be my hands down favorite character, but her being the equivalent of time-lord renesmee has almost ruined her for me. i mean, i don't hate her, i'm just, not invested anymore. i still go back and watch her episodes and think, "damn, you are awesome. no wonder i love you so much." but the reveal was so bad, i'm having a hard time recovering from how awful it was. obviously i am too emotionally invested in this.

[identity profile] fenm.livejournal.com 2011-07-31 05:45 pm (UTC)(link)
but her being the equivalent of time-lord renesmee

Oh, SNAP.
