I don't understand why people have to give two shits about who people ended up with in the old series. Like, okay so in canon Katara and Aang got together, awesome whatever, it was never a main focus, it was more about Aang finding his inner strength and mystical journey and Zuko learning to not be a handjob.

How does this stop you from making your own epic length fanfic Zutara story? Why on earth do you care? The writers created the fucking show, I think they have a lot more say on who goes with who. And if you don't agree, then fucking write your own story.

I will never, ever understand shipping wars on a series that is otherwise perfectly sane fandom wise. It's like getting a hotel room, fining it's perfectly made, the bed is perfect and comfy, the shower is clean and everything is magical, but the leave a peppermint instead of a chocolate mint. It's like calling the front desk and leaving a scathing message over the mind and god dammit why couldn't it be a fucking chocolate mint you don't fucking understand, I wrote a 50 page essay on chocolate mints you fucking heathen, god DAMN YOU.

To be fair, the shipping really was the least of my concerns, but I thought the way they wrapped it up wasn't so great. Yes, Zutara would have been the mint on the pillow, but there were way more problems, and the Kataang wasn't "adequate," even in terms of the relationship itself. I would call if not only there was a mint instead of a chocolate and it was smashed up.

It was adequate to me because romance was almost the furthest thing from my mind watching it. I mean, maybe I'm in a minority here but I couldn't have cared less who ended up with who, I wanted to see Toph beat the fuck out of people, see AAng learn fire bending ,see Zuko learn the magic of friendship and see sokka be awesome.

Why did romance have to be a major part to it? Was it really that important? I mean, was it handled badly? Ehh it was sorta clumsy at the end but to be fair, I wasent expecting a whirlwind romance, It was a dumb cute little ending.

For me the relationships were a major focus, platonic too and I just felt like they were really trying to tell us which relationships were better/stronger, but I wasn't buying it. (e.g. At the end it seemed like they were trying to say "Zuko and Aang are now best friends!" and while I agree that they were friends, it was clear Zuko was way closer with Sokka than he was with Aang.) Romance itself was secondary to the story, but it's like the mint. I would have been happy without, but when there's a mint smashed up all over the pillow it's worse than no mint at all.

It was a dumb cute little ending. - That's exactly why I hated it. It doesn't fit with the story (compare to the season 2 finale). They needed a dramatic ending - Zuko finding mom, Avatar restoring peace with heavy sacrifices, finally knocking down the walls of Ba Sing Se, Water Tribe warriors returning home, etc. Not so much "And then Aang got the girl."

But at the same time, and I'm really sorry for pulling a bullshit card, but this is a nickelodeon show. I mean, it was written wonderfully, animated awesome, and was very mature, but it was still a kid's show. I honestly think you were expecting wayyyy too much from this. Did you really expect an epic romantic whirlwind drama? I'm sorry, but I can bet like 90% of kids watching gave less than zero shits about who was kissing who.

But would you be saying this if Zutara had been the one to finish out the series?
The series didn't need some over the top busy full of action ending? Why? The war was over and it was nice to see the characters actually being teenagers and something of a new family.

And honestly the series lost some of the momentum Zuko joined the Gaang.

For me, I had enough faith in them that the little shipping on the top was the only part of the finale I wouldn't be blown away by so it was the only part worth discussing. When I was disappointed in the finale, well part of it is that they set up the finale storytelling in a way that could have lead to it more naturally than the epilogue at the end so that was just a little insult to injury.

It's great that you might not give two shits about who ends up with who, but for people in the fandom who spent so much time dedicated to and invested in certain pairings, watching a series where a large portion of it hinges on the success on a rival pairing is like a slap in the face. To continue your hotel analogy, it would be like if one of of the hotel managers knocks on your door after you get comfortable and tells you "sorry, wrong room lol" and then sends you to stay in a cramped, musty little craphole of a room. Overdramatic? Absolutely, but emotions clearly aren't always rational.

I would have preferred no romance, especially since what we got (imo) was terrible. TBH I thought the finale as a whole (except for Zuko and Katara vs. Azula) was completely awful. Forget shipping; the Turle Ex Machina was like going into that wonderful hotel room only to find that someone left a smelly turd in your toilet and didn't flush.

LOL, actually lately it seems as though it's the canon-shippers who are writing huge fandom essays and PSAs on why canon is best and everyone else is wrong.
