To be fair, the shipping really was the least of my concerns, but I thought the way they wrapped it up wasn't so great. Yes, Zutara would have been the mint on the pillow, but there were way more problems, and the Kataang wasn't "adequate," even in terms of the relationship itself. I would call if not only there was a mint instead of a chocolate and it was smashed up.

It was adequate to me because romance was almost the furthest thing from my mind watching it. I mean, maybe I'm in a minority here but I couldn't have cared less who ended up with who, I wanted to see Toph beat the fuck out of people, see AAng learn fire bending ,see Zuko learn the magic of friendship and see sokka be awesome.

Why did romance have to be a major part to it? Was it really that important? I mean, was it handled badly? Ehh it was sorta clumsy at the end but to be fair, I wasent expecting a whirlwind romance, It was a dumb cute little ending.

For me the relationships were a major focus, platonic too and I just felt like they were really trying to tell us which relationships were better/stronger, but I wasn't buying it. (e.g. At the end it seemed like they were trying to say "Zuko and Aang are now best friends!" and while I agree that they were friends, it was clear Zuko was way closer with Sokka than he was with Aang.) Romance itself was secondary to the story, but it's like the mint. I would have been happy without, but when there's a mint smashed up all over the pillow it's worse than no mint at all.

It was a dumb cute little ending. - That's exactly why I hated it. It doesn't fit with the story (compare to the season 2 finale). They needed a dramatic ending - Zuko finding mom, Avatar restoring peace with heavy sacrifices, finally knocking down the walls of Ba Sing Se, Water Tribe warriors returning home, etc. Not so much "And then Aang got the girl."

But at the same time, and I'm really sorry for pulling a bullshit card, but this is a nickelodeon show. I mean, it was written wonderfully, animated awesome, and was very mature, but it was still a kid's show. I honestly think you were expecting wayyyy too much from this. Did you really expect an epic romantic whirlwind drama? I'm sorry, but I can bet like 90% of kids watching gave less than zero shits about who was kissing who.

Actually my little cousin did. And from a little kid's perspective, wouldn't they be asking why she didn't kiss Zuko after he saved her when Aang wasn't there for her at all in the finale? Just saying, it goes both ways. (Also didn't they and Nick both know their fanbase was older?) I will also point out that kids' show is not an excuse to be stupid, and certainly not a good reason to break tone. Disney had Esmeralda end up with Pheobus, just saying.

Look, I wasn't happy with the ending, I just don't like it boiled down to me being butthurt over shipping. Before the finale, in zutara communities, I would say "I'd like it to be Zutara, but I really just care that the ending is good." I would appreciate it if you didn't keep trying to imply that it was all about shipping.

I enjoyed the ending, and I'm not implying you're butthurt about anything broseph, I'm saying, my main point at the core of all of this, is that I personally, found shipping to be such a minor issue that I can't understand people who start huge epic LJ wars over it or who think god dammit the finale was awful because so and so didn't kiss so and so.

But that's the thing I didn't think it was awful because Katara didn't kiss Zuko. Would I have preferred it? Sure! At least if it were well done! Would it have saved the rest of the finale imho? Not by a long shot!

I guess I feel like at the end of the day you're still implying that the only reason all Zutara fans find issue with the final was the lack of Zutara, and you know, I bet that's true for some of them. However, I think you're also ignoring the other flaws in it that would have still dragged it down for other fans, even if they shipped Zutara.

But would you be saying this if Zutara had been the one to finish out the series?
The series didn't need some over the top busy full of action ending? Why? The war was over and it was nice to see the characters actually being teenagers and something of a new family.

And honestly the series lost some of the momentum Zuko joined the Gaang.

Yeah, I would. Assuming that only the epilogue was changed from Kataang and Maiko to Zutara, I would say that I didn't like the way they handled Aang's fight, Ty Lee's ending bugged me, and that I might have liked the Zutara, but I would rather know where Ursa was. (Hell, even back before the finale I'd say "I'd like Zutara, but I care more about a good ending, if they can make Kataang work, I'll enjoy it.")

Also, a big part of what I liked is that they did act like teenagers, just with an actual goal. I didn't care much for the faffing about Zuko did in the palace, nor did I care for the faffing about at the end.

Oh and the turtle... Goddeamn that turtle. I had apparently blocked that out of my memory. >.<

I couldn't understand one word he said, and I figure that Aang could "spiritbend" or whatever just by harnessing the different elements within the human body (a la bloodbending x 4). It would have had Aang approaching the situation in a new and different fashion, thinking outside the box which is a pretty big element to his character.

Do I think that would stop Ozai? Idk, I kind of doubt it, but it does have Aang doing things his way, not relying on the avatar state, and finding a new solution without the turtle coming in and giving him the answer.

I would bet you dollars to donuts if I had any of either that anon would've thought the ending was ~perfect had it wound up Zutara. After all, Zutara is the answer to the series' every flaw, since it's such a perfectly perfect ship full of perfection.

If I had been writing the ending, yeah I would probably have chosen to make it Zutara as I think it's more interesting (I was neutral towards Kataang). However, I was actually planning a fanfiction with a friend (pre-finale) and found myself favoring Kataang in that story. Sorry to burst your bubble.

You just sound more and more like every other butthurt Zutara shipper out there vehemently trying to deny how butthurt they are but always coming back to the goddamn shipping whenever a finale discussion comes up. And I used to ship it a teeny tiny casually curious bit, for about 5 seconds, until the Zutara fandom drove me nuts with the constant bashing and whining and scary obsession over two fictional characters not kissing. I just don't get how who's kissing could possibly be more important to people than the world getting saved and Azula going crazy and good and bad guys beating each other up and the fucking volcano fight and all the other awesome stuff the finale had.

Ha ha sarcasm. But Zutara isn't perfect. It would be a huge steaming pile of WTF? So what if Zuko jumped in front of the lightning. Aang saved the whole damned world. And if you can't see what she might find appealing in Aang, then how the hell are you going to see what she could possibly like about Zuko who she hated for 90% of the series.

Kataang could have been better, but Zutara isn't the answer. It's a bigger mess of plot issues and character issues. And people whine about "hero getting the girl" and then turn hypocrite by making it "redemption earns you big prizes" or by claiming that Zuko is the real hero and he should have been with Katara (forgetting that that makes it hero gets the girl again)

I'm not overly wild about shipping, but I hate stupidity. And the argument that the series would have fared better with Zutara is ridiculous.

and what I mean by that is, he didn't go into the fight with Ozai with the intent to access the Avatar State. he just ...hoped he could beat him. thank the rock & lionturtle! they essentially saved the world.

it's even specifically quoted in the Sozin's Comet comic books (which I think were creator-sanctioned), that Aang decided keeping Katara was more important than achieving control over the Avatar State and thus saving the world.

aang picked his attachment issues over anything else in his life, despite his duty as the avatar to do otherwise for the sake of everyone else.

For me, I had enough faith in them that the little shipping on the top was the only part of the finale I wouldn't be blown away by so it was the only part worth discussing. When I was disappointed in the finale, well part of it is that they set up the finale storytelling in a way that could have lead to it more naturally than the epilogue at the end so that was just a little insult to injury.

I...still don't understand the huge focus on shipping, though. And not just in Avatar fandom, but fandom as a whole. Why is everyone so obsessed over who is shacking up with whom? Though it's especially WTF in a series like Avatar, ehich has so much other stuff to get excited about. If you want shipping that badly, go read Harlequin or something, IDFK.

I'm not, like, rabidly against shipping but when it overtakes the fandom and gets into rabid wars it becomes fucking idiotic.

Like, I personally thought Ginny was boring and thought their romance was kinda badly done, but I fucking ignored it because it was a little bump in the road of Harry fighting a god damn Evil Wizard.

*shrugs* I liked seeing the relationships grow, change, and be torn down at least as much as the fights. The scenery was great, the story (for the most part) was great, and the characters were some that I really related to and loved. I wanted them to get the ending they deserved.

The problem is that pretty much everyone would have liked to see Zuko find his mom, so if you bring it up, it's just sort of a dull agreement. If you bring up that you're unhappy with the pairings, suddenly there is something to disagree on.
