I wouldn't say they have half the fic to choose from. Most of it isn't exactly about John maturing, it's more about 'Karkat/Dave/whoever I am suddenly very homosexual for you' or established relationship fics. Which are fine but I don't think it's what OP is looking for.

I dunno, I see a lot of fic about John working through issues of sexuality.

There's also a fair share of it about him growing into it over time, especially when he's paired with Dave.

Though, yes, the pwp outnumbers everything.

ah i can agree with this.

I like to follow canon and that he's not homosexual and I don't ship him with any guys or girls really, but reading a fic like that could be delightful because yeah not everyone knows for sure until they get older and even then it can be very trivial and questionable.

I just like to stick to canon meantime. Because...it's canon. While he's thirteen or even a little older. He doesn't seem the type to sit and question HMM MAYBE I'M GAY, but maybe somewhere in the middle or maybe he'd start wondering about an attraction to a male or...anything could happen, really. It'd be a cute idea to explore, if nothing else.

There IS no wank like Homestuck wank, except possibly ATLA wank. But even as someone who's not in that fandom, that sounds like an interesting fic idea if it was handled well and not just used as a casual springboard into porn.

This "growing up" business puzzles me...

... as far as it's relation to the main plot goes. Currently, everyone's fighting demons and monsters, dying left and right and the universe is under threat of destruction, and I can't really see a time for them to sit back and grow up and have everything clear out for a while so there can be soul-searching or sexxytimes! Any fic that wanted to keep the pretext of canon-compatability would surely have to have a lot of explaining as to what happened to the rest of the in the time that it took for any of the kids to grow up?

well the answer is that most of this fic is purely speculative and takes place in AU-space from what i've seen

people just like to think about what the kids would be like when they're older and whether rose would be a social worker and stuff

yeah idk why everyone takes that one comment of john's so seriously i mean... he's kind of a flake? and if he happened to be attracted to karkat or whoever at some point (because sometimes even people who otherwise identify as straight end up falling for someone of the same sex anyway!) then i can't see him really giving a fuck about being homosexual or heterosexual in the long run

Knowing John, it could also be a prank, especially with the way Karkat flips out and with John's love of trolling Karkat backwards. I don't think Hussie would give up such a delicious way to troll his own fans that easily, either.

I ....really don't think it was a prank. There isn't anything there to indicate it wasn't serious.

John turning out to be actually not straight, because right now he's 13 and hasn't thought about dating, that makes sense. All those other excuses shippers come up with, like 'he was joking', and 'he's in the closet and was totally overreacting to cover it up gais!', those don't make sense.

There was nothing in that scene to indicate that there was more to it than what was going on at face value. Can we as a fandom stop second guessing that scene, please.

I don't know, why is it so bad that people keep second guessing it? Why, instead, do people keep on insisting on taking it as something that is set in stone forever and place so much weight on the scene?

I like re-evaluating it because I think the subject is interesting, and would be a lot more fun if there was something more to it rather than just a declaration of heterosexuality. Though I did think poor Karkat's reaction was pretty cute, and I felt bad for him.

And while I would like if John/Karkat became canon, it's really no skin off my back if it never does. I'm not 'coming up with excuses', so much as coming up with alternatives that I disagree with you about that I would find plausible because I think it's fun and like to speculate. Gods forbid!

And it is not like I am using this speculation to invalidate canon, or use it as fodder against John/Vriska (which I find fucking adorable, btw)... so, what is the problem with us shippers having our fun?

I can agree with this to a point, at least from a Watsonian perspective. (Although the way John phrased it is pretty amusing -- it sounds like something a politician four times his age would say!)

But after the flash beforehand and Karkat's introductory speech? It was the most beautifully Doylist punchline Hussie could have delivered, and that is what makes people hesitate to take John's statement as incontrovertible.

I totally understand. I was so certain I was straight until I hit about 17 and even now, at 22, I'm kinda unclear on how bi versus lesbian I am. So the idea that John might be something other than straight seems totally plausible.

And I say that with my only John ship being John/Vriska so I've got no horse in this race.
