I know guys who like this, and none of them pretends to suddenly turn feminist. They enjoy it 'cause they're big kids who like cartoons and this is actually one of the better ones out there.

Basically, I don't now where you pulled this interpretation from, and you don't get to dictate what people can and can't like.

[identity profile] pts.livejournal.com 2011-08-30 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks.

Yeah, every brony I've seen is exactly like you've described and not at all like in the secret.

[identity profile] hikari87.livejournal.com 2011-08-30 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't even watch this show, but this.

Oh boy this is gonna be a fun one

[identity profile] oflittlebrain.livejournal.com 2011-08-30 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
ok i agree that it would be stupid if they were claiming to be feminists just because they watch mlp but... i haven't actually seen that happening???

and i haven't seen them being particularly smug about being a GUY who watches MY LITTLE PONY!!! if i did, that would be annoying... but i don't really see how it's particularly sexist? just rather special-snowflake-syndrome-ish.

[identity profile] 365reasonswhy.livejournal.com 2011-08-30 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Ponies secrets just make me sad that I long ago gave away all of my first gen ponies. I could have put them on eBay and made a little cash from the Bronies.

I have nothing relevant to contribute because I don't know the fandom. :/

The only asshole bronies I've ever met didn't think of themselves as feminists, they proclaimed the new show wasn't for girls anymore, but a guy thing. A bit like "only real men wear pink".

While some of the Bronies I've seen online can be pretty obnoxious, the ones I've known IRL so far have been awesome. One of them is a feminist (and a very well-informed and self-aware one at that), and for him, it isn't "OMG, this show for girls is actually good!", it's more like "hey, look at this, a cool cartoon from someone who worked on Powerpuff Girls!" I wouldn't write off the entire Brony community if I was you.

+1

Hi. I'm female, but I wish you'd reconsider hating the "bronies", because my baby brother is one -- precisely because he was never allowed to like the original MLP openly at school. Have you considered that guys might actually the disadvantaged group for once? It wasn't little girls who got beat up for having an Applejack toy.

See, anon, there's this thing called a vocal minority. It's when very loud assholes who because of their loudness, people think they represent the fandom. This happens with nearly every fandom.

Non snarkily, a lot of male bronies have become my friends. I kindly request that you don't make assumptions.

[identity profile] reddfawks.livejournal.com 2011-08-30 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Insecure? Defensive? Smug? RLY? Having just come back from another con, I can still say Bronies are one of the nicest subfandoms I've seen.

[identity profile] malik-chan.livejournal.com 2011-08-30 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
I think the toy ponies from Friendship is Magic look like they have duck bills for noses/mouths and their anatomy just looks weird. At least the old ones looked semi-realistic.

[identity profile] duae.livejournal.com 2011-08-30 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
On the negativity thing, most bronies I've seen ignore attempts to troll 'em. I'm sure there probably are jerks, there are jerks in every fandom that has ever existed in history. But they're not the majority.

[identity profile] stunt-muppet.livejournal.com 2011-08-30 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
All the bronies I've net have been nice, though. And have stayed away from the fake feminism and woman-bashing, too.

But then I don't hang out on /co/, which probably helps.

[identity profile] smittenlotus.livejournal.com 2011-08-30 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
I just think the word itself is dumb. If a guy likes the show, more power to 'em.

[identity profile] formula-410.livejournal.com 2011-08-30 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
I.. haven't seen this at all. Where have you seen this?

[identity profile] lljscrawls.livejournal.com 2011-08-30 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
It depends on the person. Yeah, some people are like that, but some people just like the show. Personally, I feel like "brony" encompasses every fan that's out of the target demographic. So basically, that's a LOT of people you're generalizing, OP.

Also, yeah, to a twenty-four year old guy, it might be surprising that he finds that he likes that show. It happens.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_dogan/ 2011-08-30 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
I can sort of relate to this - as it was posted in a secret a few weeks ago, sometimes the fandom does legitimately scare me. I don't, however, think it's because of this reason, but more that they're just....obsessive, I guess would be the word. Then again, I can also say that most of the fans I've met have been pretty cool, so there's definitely subdivisions within the fandom

(Anonymous) 2011-08-30 06:00 am (UTC)(link)
The only bronies I don't get are the ones who loudly insist on declaring that MLP:FiM is MANLY.
It's a show about brightly colored talking ponies with names like Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash, Twilight Sparkle, Sweetie Belle, and Cheerilee that uses characters from a toy line targeted at preschool and elementary school girls. The only way you could make the entire MLP concept girlier would be to paint it hot pink and coat it an inch thick with glitter glue. It is a girly show.
Just accept already that a good show can be girly, and a girly show can be good.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-30 07:07 am (UTC)(link)
What irks me are the male fans who loudly proclaim how amazed they are that a show for girls is good enough to appeal to THEM, and that makes them so special and open-minded. And their show is SO MUCH BETTER because it appeals to BOTH GENDERS, GUYS. Because if something is directed specifically at girls, it must be crap, right?

Yeah a lot of bronies can be pretty stupid.

Anyone read the comments on the youtube video of that stage show? They flipped their shit because god forbid that something childish and simple exist in their precious fandom. They can be very hypocritical about the fact they are watching a girly show.

Bringing up a feminist topic in a pony chat also got met with "but what about the menz?" x 100. A lot of them aren't much better than male gamers in their feminism-awareness. They're really nice people, there's just a lot of rampant ignorance.
